Employment Contract Penalties for Campanile
Detroit News reports steep monetary penalties for Campanile in his 2 year contract with U of M. Forfeiture of significant portion of contract for making a lateral move early and more if going to a member of the Big Ten East.

Good.
No more Benedict Mattisons.
January 18th, 2019 at 1:36 PM ^
This is beautiful and painful at the same time...
January 18th, 2019 at 1:38 PM ^
Wish I could take credit for it - but a very powerful and impactful representation of what Mattison did to us...not once...but TWICE.
In the words of the immortal Darla from "The Little Rascals":

I agree.
January 18th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
Meh... Mattisons move wasn't lateral.
January 18th, 2019 at 2:06 PM ^
It was a promotion since he became the DC.
January 18th, 2019 at 2:44 PM ^
Maybe Mattisons intentions are to be in the interests of Michigan?? A bit far-fetched, I know....but before we hang the guy, let's see how it plays out.
January 18th, 2019 at 3:00 PM ^
We saw how it played out! He gone, Washington gone, Harrison to OSU, Defense looked like shit - like OSU offense knew what we were doing hmm.
Kills me this guy left
January 18th, 2019 at 3:01 PM ^
You missed the 2nd part where it had consequences for going to B1G East.

Hurst and Clark are the only decent D linemen he put into the pros at Michigan. Wormley is average at best. Henry is slightly above average. Taco, Glasgow, Godin, van bergen, roh, Campbell haven’t done anything. No one else did anything. He wasted rashan’s potential. The kid still doesn’t have a single pass rush move to his name.
January 18th, 2019 at 5:11 PM ^
This is so true. I think he was loved here because he’s a good guy and a member of the team but you can only hang your hat on your success with the Baltimore Ravens 10 years ago for so long.
Definitely not irreplaceable.
January 18th, 2019 at 9:17 PM ^
He was fairly awful as UM's DC.
Whenever this was pointed out, the response was usually "but but Ravens..." as if that means anything.
Gave up 42 points and 400 rushing yards to TUOS and we heard "but Ravens...".
Suck it, Mattison.
January 18th, 2019 at 5:32 PM ^
i wish UM guys success in the pros, but i care much more what they do as a wolverine. all those guys you mentioned were very good and improved greatly while at UM; with the possible exceptions of gary and campbell. add winovich to your list too.

Apparently we have learned a bit about loyalty of coaches and best business practices. Makes me wonder about Gattis and Nua contracts.
January 18th, 2019 at 1:37 PM ^
Gattis has to pay back portions of the contract if he leaves for a lateral job in college.
Michigan will not attempt to block him from interviewing for NFL jobs.
January 18th, 2019 at 1:47 PM ^
This is nothing new, of course. The difference is in the details and the amounts. One thing that is new is that schools have to address NFL jobs in buyout clauses.
I wonder about Partridge's contract. Considering it was renegotiated after flirting with the Bama job offer, I'd expect his buyout to be high.

Agreed. We only had to get quasi-burned once in our world before incorporating these concepts into certain levels of our organization.
These agreements have to be structured in a reasonable and fair way (as they should be) to be enforceable in our world, but if someone is already thinking about their next jump before they've even started for you, especially to potential competitors, it's certainly better to know now--"know" being a somewhat relative term in this case.
Regardless, finding the balance in managing someone who feels "stuck" in a contractual relationship, be it employee (coach) or student-athlete, is clearly tricky when you're weighing varying perspectives on a new opportunity versus commitments made by each party at the onset of the relationship.
We work hard to support staff who have an opportunity to truly grow and advance when we recognize that those same opportunities for them to do so might not currently exist within our own organization.
January 18th, 2019 at 2:19 PM ^
Who is "we"? Are you part of the athletic department or talking about some other job?
January 18th, 2019 at 2:37 PM ^
It doesn't matter who "we" is. These are principles that not only businesses but people, in general, should employ.
January 18th, 2019 at 3:47 PM ^
Sorry for any confusion..."we" just meant our organization--no affiliation with UM Athletics or this specific issue.
January 18th, 2019 at 3:38 PM ^
I don't think we got burned by Mattison or Al. Harbaugh fully knew Mattison wanted to be DC. And knew Al was a OSU slappy. He hired them under their terms. And now they left . Same with Durkin who wanted to be HC. Even Penis Enos... the concept is called the Devil's Alternative

I like this, I like this a lot...

Campanile won’t have to pay a buyout if he leaves to become defensive coordinator outside the Big Ten East Division — except Rutgers.
Meaning he actually wants to leave an opening in his contract so he can go to Rutgur at some point.
January 18th, 2019 at 1:59 PM ^
Or Michigan doesn’t care if he goes to lowly Rutgers.
January 18th, 2019 at 4:34 PM ^
I believe Campanile went to Rutgers, so that might have something to do with it.
January 18th, 2019 at 5:33 PM ^
That's not how contracts work. His agent/lawyer had that put in there specifically so he'd be able to go to Rutger.
January 18th, 2019 at 6:23 PM ^
Yes, but Michigan agreed because it's Rutgers. They might feel differently if we substituted PSU for them.
January 19th, 2019 at 9:49 AM ^
He’s a Jersey guy, so I’m assuming that’s why it’s in there.
January 18th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
Unless the BC job opens up, it doesn't make sense for him to leave anyway. He's here to learn at the feet of Don Brown and Harbaugh, and I'd imagine he'd want to be here for at least two years.
January 18th, 2019 at 1:44 PM ^
Could castration be legally included in a contract for going directly to OSU?
January 18th, 2019 at 1:45 PM ^
What if he wants to sit out the bowl game?
January 18th, 2019 at 1:47 PM ^
I think Nua’s contract will be around $550-$600K. Plus or minus $50K with incentives.
January 18th, 2019 at 1:53 PM ^
Do D-line coaches normally make more than other defensive assistants? I would think Campanile would make more than Nua since he has had more history of success
January 18th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
Each situation is different. Nua needed some extra incentives to leave early.
January 18th, 2019 at 1:51 PM ^
curious as to what campanile was making at BC? I was assuming he was going to be a Co-DC/safeties coach and figured he would be closer to $600-$700k....
I mean $415k is still pretty damn good lol
January 18th, 2019 at 2:22 PM ^
I'd bet a lot he was making less than $415 K.
BC only discloses the salaries of their highest paid employees, currently around $550 K+. No assistants are in that group. And while Campinile had the co-DC title, someone else was DC and presumably above him.
January 18th, 2019 at 1:56 PM ^
is there a "no strip club" clause in the recruiting manual? i hear some big ten schools have added that language recently.
January 18th, 2019 at 2:08 PM ^
Not at Texas. OK, Cool Hook 'em!
January 18th, 2019 at 2:27 PM ^
Who the fuck would sign that contract? Not me.
January 18th, 2019 at 2:10 PM ^
Has Warinner been locked down yet?
January 18th, 2019 at 2:21 PM ^
Weird way of describing a buyout but ok.
January 18th, 2019 at 3:23 PM ^
Has an interesting Rutgers carve out where there isn't the same penalties
January 19th, 2019 at 9:14 AM ^
This doesn't seem shocking, just common sense. It seems like I've heard a few coaches negotiating a special out to go back home to their alma mater. I remember urban was reported years ago to have negotiated special exceptions for Michigan and ND.
