New in-state offer: 2020 RB Peny Boone
Michigan offered 2020 Detroit (MI) King running back Peny Boone. I was wondering how long it would take Michigan to offer, or even if they would. He's a 4-star, the #29 running back, and #340 overall at a listed 6'2", 225 lbs. His 40 time is listed at 4.81. Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, and others have already offered.
Here's a link to his highlights (LINK).

Hey Magnus, how about a "peny" for your thoughts on the offer...

It's an interesting ones. Big backs haven't had a ton of success at Michigan in recent years. You probably have to go back to Anthony Thomas, or maybe B.J. Askew, depending on your definition of success. Boone has better feet and vision than someone like Derrick Green. Boone is a good back to pound the rock.

I don't disagree with your comments but I would count De'Veon Smith among the successful group given that he was Michigan's leading rusher for 2 or 3 years (and multiple 750 yard seasons).

Magnus did say depending on your definition of success. Smith was a good back. But he didn't take over the game even in the way that Higdon did last year. And 750 yards is pretty good. But we make a big deal about getting a 1000 yard season for a reason.

Fair enough. I don't view him that way. He was one of the least productive running backs that Michigan has put out in a long time, and he's generated less interest from the NFL than the likes of Toussaint, Rawls, etc. He was a starter . . . and that's about it.

Yeah, it would be nice to have a "special" running back again. One that defenses actually have to game plan for.
Deveon was nothing but a "possession" running back. He wasn't going to put the fear in a defense that he could take it to the house.
As far as him being "good" because he had a couple 750 yd seasons. I wouldn't say that makes him "good". Makes him nothing more than an "average" B10 running back at best.

I think you're underrating Smith. He played in some bad offenses early in his career, behind some very bad offensive lines, and he still graduated in the top 20 in career rushing yardage at Michigan.
It's true that he wasn't fast. That is, in fact, an understatement. His speed was below average for the position. But he was practically the Platonic ideal of a tackle-breaking back. Big, incredibly strong, and with the balance of a world-class gymnast. His lack of speed probably means that he'll never be an NFL guy, but as a college back, he was quite effective.

What was your view on Dillon... and is it true we passed on him .
January 15th, 2019 at 6:03 PM ^
From what I remember, Dillon wanted to play running back, Michigan wanted him to play linebacker.
January 15th, 2019 at 7:39 PM ^
I think it was a little different than that. Michigan floated the idea that if running back didn't work out, they wanted him to be open to playing linebacker. He wanted to play at a school that saw him purely as a running back.

Better feet and vision than Derrick Green? Some high fuckin praise man.
Blind, double leg amputees have better feet and vision than Derrick Green. And I bet it would take more then being touched by a pinky finger to tackle most of them.

great name, do want.

With a name like that, you can’t not be a legend!

Booooooooone

If Iowa wants a running back, I also want that running back for Michigan. Period.

If Iowa wants a running back, we need to do everything we can to get that kid as far away from AIRBHG as possible.

A wise offer.

Looks like they are being Peny Wise.
January 15th, 2019 at 4:12 PM ^
Is there where we offer a big RB, tell him he's going to play LB, decommits and becomes a stud RB?
He appears to be some serious Thunder
January 15th, 2019 at 4:27 PM ^
I think he can definitely a good running book at Michigan. He doesn't have breakaway speed but with all the shifty guys we've been recruiting, it'd be good to get some big decisive runners in between the tackles too. Charbonnet is obviously a big back as well but he seems to also possess breakaway speed.
January 15th, 2019 at 8:52 PM ^
We don't need running books, we need expanded playbooks.
January 15th, 2019 at 4:39 PM ^
Peny wise but LB foolish?

This is a great comment, and I hope you get all the upvotes.

4.81 40 time? Isn’t that rather slow?
January 15th, 2019 at 4:54 PM ^
If you are over 40 and overweight No...it is a great time. If you are a top ranked RB recruit then yes, it is rather slow in comparison to other elite talent. I would guess it is rather tough to decipher the legitimacy of that time.
January 15th, 2019 at 5:13 PM ^
The kid is likely only 16 years old. If he gets that time down to 4.6 and goes 6'3" 235 he will be quite the load as a college RB. Regardless, offer that kid!
January 15th, 2019 at 9:02 PM ^
Yeah a good comparison would be Le’Veon Bell. Not saying he’ll be that good, but he’s that style of guy and could get in Bells range as far as size and speed.
January 15th, 2019 at 7:08 PM ^
That 40 time is slow as fuck for a RB.
January 15th, 2019 at 7:39 PM ^
It might also be an old 40 time.
January 15th, 2019 at 8:05 PM ^
I dunno. Seems like a pretty quick fuck to me.
January 16th, 2019 at 12:58 AM ^
Oh. Look at mr. Endurance over here!
January 15th, 2019 at 8:00 PM ^
Peny Boone is the younger brother of Zurlon Tipton (Central Michigan, Indianapolis Colts) who passed away tragically a few years ago. That 4.8 40 time is legit. He’s a power back that lacks break away speed. I’ve watched him play since he was playing little league football
January 15th, 2019 at 9:19 PM ^
He's in his mid teens...let the kid grow into his body...he is not going to get slower.
January 15th, 2019 at 10:08 PM ^
I’ve coached (as DC) against Peny twice. Comes from a good bloodline as his brother is the late Zurlon Tipton.
Boone was a backup at Warren Fitzgerald as a sophomore primarily due to his fumbling issues. He fumbled five times in the opening week. He was primarily used in the slot the rest of the year and scored once on a pass in his team’s 21-14 loss to us.
This year we faced him at King and he was the best player on their offense. We were able to shut down Finn and the D1 receivers on the outside but Peny killed us with two long second half TDs as they won by 2 scores.
He has the physical tools to be great. He has to work on his ballcarrying and he runs a bit too upright. A fair comparison right now would be Brandon Minor.
