Michigan took more than Gattis from ‘Bama
Per the Attack Each Day podcast, Jim Harbaugh offers a few nuggets to us fans.
- Jim mentions that Coach Gattis informed him that the top QB Alabama was pursuing for their 2019 class was Cade McNamara. Great that the Wolverines beat out Bama for Cade! That’s us beating out the Tide for their top QB and top Safety in Daxton Hill.
Also:
- Jim shares that he has wanted to hire Gattis for years and jumped at the chance once he heard he was heading to MD.
- Also mentions that Gattis has an excellent reputation as a recruiter among our top recruiters (Partridge, JayBaugh)
- As mentioned in another board post, Jim confirms that Gattis will run the entire offense.

Thank God for some positive football news!
January 15th, 2019 at 12:58 PM ^
It's sure is tough to get positive football news when we are a basketball school.
January 15th, 2019 at 1:01 PM ^
You are a funny guy!!! I want to be like you when I get bigger!!
January 15th, 2019 at 2:56 PM ^
How about just wider?
January 15th, 2019 at 11:53 AM ^
I like McNamara and all, but this was a pretty weak year for quarterbacks in general. So it's not too surprising if a lot of teams were targeting McNamara and a few other top prospects, because there aren't enough good QBs in 2019 to go around, IMO.
January 15th, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
Totally respect your take Magnus - you know a ton more about the recruiting scene and I trust your judgment. I'm just glad to see us beating out Alabama for their top targets.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:07 PM ^
weak year or not, michigan still beat out alabama and other schools for mcnamara.
i could argue it's more impressive during a weak QB year, where there's not a lot of other QB recruits schools can fall back on as plan b, that michigan ultimately beat out other schools for mcnamara.
edit: upon second read, my comments read a wee bit combative. sorry, not my intention. really excited we beat alabama for recruits.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:28 PM ^
I see your edit, but I wasn't really saying it was good or bad that we beat 'Bama for him. I'm just saying it was a smaller pool of good QBs. That's been known for a while, but the All-American games were a good indication. There were a couple of guys who looked good (Bo Nix, Graham Mertz), but some of them shouldn't have even been playing in those games (I won't name any names).
January 15th, 2019 at 1:36 PM ^
C’mon man, name names!
January 15th, 2019 at 1:00 PM ^
Does that mean there will be a decline in QB transfers for the Class of 19?
January 15th, 2019 at 1:09 PM ^
Magnus, I think you're being a little tough bro. It was really no different that 2018 or 2017 when you look at depth. We don't really know if their is a Trevor Lawrence in the bunch, but there wasn't a Trevor Lawrence in the last few classes.
January 15th, 2019 at 1:36 PM ^
I disagree, but that's fine if you think that.
January 15th, 2019 at 1:21 PM ^
Cade reminds me of brees. Not saying he’s the goat. Just that the size and ability to fit any ball in any window. He could either be another malzone or another brees/Wilson lite.
January 15th, 2019 at 1:45 PM ^
Cade is not the most physically gifted QB in the 2019 class however his intelligence and leadership characteristics are off the charts. It will likely take him a couple years for him to adapt the nuances of the position at this level to his more average physical abilities but if there is anyone who is going to "over-achieve" it is going to be him. And that is one of the really good things about how he fits into this class...he is not going to be asked to start tomorrow. I see his up-side as being more of a Joe Montana type QB-very cerebral, hard-nosed competitor.
January 15th, 2019 at 2:28 PM ^
Ok, so hes somewhere between Drew Brees and Joe Montana?
January 15th, 2019 at 3:18 PM ^
I think he’s more of a Marino/Elway type. First ballot HOFer, but not the goat (that’s Brees of course).
January 15th, 2019 at 8:03 PM ^
I think he'll bring his lunch pail. He's a coach's son, and he's spent so much time as a gym rat. He's sneaky athletic too -- most people expect Milton to be a dual threat because 'skin-deep analysis', but this white guy is a better athlete than you'd think.
Anyways, I just wanted to say "let's confirm racial stereotypes."
Thank you all!

The only thing I wouldn't take from Alabama is a lesson in how to run a clean and ethical football program
January 15th, 2019 at 2:58 PM ^
Why not? You simply watch what they do and then do the complete opposite.
January 15th, 2019 at 11:55 AM ^
File for several months: when Patterson struggles, there will now be fans who pine for Cade McNamara, having seen nothing but 22 seconds of senior highlight film and this post, because "they just have a feeling about him". These will be the exact same fans asserting that Joe Milton will and should transfer because he threw an interception in the spring game.
January 15th, 2019 at 11:58 AM ^
There are already a lot of fans who think that McCaffrey should be starting.
I admit to being..... intrigued by what I saw this year from him.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:01 PM ^
Bottom line: the QB pipeline has been repaired.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:03 PM ^
Looking at that QB room as compared to when Harbaugh walk through the door... whew!
January 15th, 2019 at 1:06 PM ^
Speaking of QB room, any rumors or insight on Peters?
January 15th, 2019 at 12:03 PM ^
Anyone clamoring for McCaffrey over Shea based on his very limited snaps is delusional. The backup QB has always been the fan favorite QB throughout Michigan history.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:07 PM ^
The difference in Shea and McCaffrey is perception. Shea came in with lofty expectations while there is more "unbridled enthusiasm" for McCaffrey. That said, the exciting part is that, while even with limited snaps, McCaffrey, can just about, run the same offense as Shea can.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:08 PM ^
True, but you can go further. The backup QB is the fan favorite player for any team at any level that isn’t dominating offensively.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:10 PM ^
True but we really are the Leaders and Best when it comes to backup QB fandom.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:39 PM ^
Philadelphia Eagles fans would challenge that.
January 15th, 2019 at 1:05 PM ^
But their back-up QB actually won the Super Bowl. :)
January 15th, 2019 at 12:09 PM ^
FIFY: "The backup QB has always been the fan favorite QB throughout the history of every team everywhere for all time."
January 15th, 2019 at 12:10 PM ^
I don't think that is exclusive to UM. I am not clamoring for McCaffrey over Shea but if Shea went down I would feel pretty okay about Dylan filling in.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:21 PM ^
I am not quite there yet, but the best passes thrown this past season were not tossed by Patterson.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:29 PM ^
I think they were. Patterson made some great passes this season. Patterson made at least one pass every game where I did a double take and rewound it to watch it again in real time. He did not hit all of them, but he hit a lot of them.
January 15th, 2019 at 2:33 PM ^
Absolutely agree. I was very impressed by McCafferey and think he is the QB of the future for Michigan, but implying he outplayed Patterson blows my mind. Patterson played at a very high level for us, at least in the offense he was allowed to run.
January 15th, 2019 at 3:22 PM ^
The downfield bomb to DPJ against Staee? That was the best throw of the year IMO. Clutch play under difficult circumstances.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
? true. It started with Henson being preferred over Brady and hasn’t stopped.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:52 PM ^
Yep, I still can't believe Rich Rod started Threet over Sheridan.... What an asshole....
January 15th, 2019 at 12:15 PM ^
I'm intrigued, and I'll say this. The people who say we can't throw the ball too much or spread it out cause our OL struggles and that's how Shea will get hurt and our season will be over, blah blah blah... Listen, Shea is a big boy who can take hits and is elusive enough to avoid the big ones, and guess what, if McCaffrey has to go in there I'm sure the drop off isn't going to be catastrophic, the kid can play. Let these kids ball out and put numbers and confidence on the board.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:53 PM ^
I thought he under threw less.
January 15th, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
I don’t know if I believe that Cade was their number 1.
Didnt they get Tua’s brother in this class?
January 15th, 2019 at 11:59 AM ^
Just from what I’ve read and saw, Tua’s brother ain’t gonna be Tua.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:00 PM ^
Yes, Tua's brother is in Bama's 2019 class. Bloodlines are significant but they don't mean everything. I don't know why Gattis would be motivated to make this up.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:17 PM ^
They got Tua's brother, who is going to school in Tuscaloosa, and Bear Bryant's grandson. They aren't bad prospects, but when recruits are that easy to reel it's easy to believe they weren't really their top choices.
January 15th, 2019 at 11:57 AM ^
This is Gattis-Mania!!!
January 15th, 2019 at 12:00 PM ^
Bye Pep
January 15th, 2019 at 12:05 PM ^
It was also mentioned in the podcast how much detail Gattis has on recruits. He had more information on certain recruits that Michigan didn’t have. Talked about how organized he is in recruiting. If his coaching is anything close to his recruiting this is going to be a fun season.
