BBall Recruiting - New 2020 Target/5* MarJon Beauchamp

Submitted by Matt EM on January 14th, 2019 at 3:50 PM

Ladies and gentleman, let's welcome 5star guard/wing MarJon Beauchamp to the 2020 recruiting board.

Best thing about this is that Marjon mentioned Michigan to me unilaterally without my asking.........says "Michigan is in the hunt"

Totally agree the sweet spot is the 40-100ish type guys that aren't going to be one and done and need to develop into NBA players (rather than guys that already are and are just looking for somewhere to marinate for a year).

But in reading the article, this guy doesn't have offers from the Duke's and UK of the world yet.  I don't follow bball recruiting to know if it's typical for those programs to just swoop in on guys whenever they want, but Michigan is in relatively early which might help.  He's clearly a 15-25ish 5-star and not a top 5 no brainer NBA player.  There is a difference in terms of what they're looking for.

I think ultimately it would help us more than harm. Duke and UK are still going to recruit the top HS players. It's just now they would have a 3rd option that pays a little bit more in the NBA. I think they would alter their approach a bit to keep in contact with lower rated guys knowing they would lose some plan A targets to the NBA.

I also think it puts that much more of an emphasis on player development. I wouldn't take any other coach in America over Beilein to develop a player. The former one and done schools wouldn't have quite the same raw talent advantage they currently possess. That also seems like a big positive for a Beilein lead Michigan team.

Guy looks like Jamal Crawford 2.0 (my favorite Wolverine b-baller of all time!). And oddly enough attends the same high school.

Would be an awesome get in JB's system. Are we a legitimate contender, or just a perepherial at this point?

In the specific context of Michigan, we can’t truly consider interest ‘serious’ until a visit occurs. Good, bad or otherwise, Coach Beilein puts the onus on the prospect to a certain extent. While a prospect may be legitimately interested in Michigan, nothing is going to develop until a visit materializes. With out of region prospects this mostly happens in the Spring-Fall

Matt, maybe I'm just noticing it now, but is the basketball scene in the Seattle area picking up in the past 5-10 years? Seems like there's a whole lot of elite talent coming out of there more recently

That would be correct, Seattle is definitely pumping out some talent these days. From Jayden McDaniels, PJ Fuller, Anton Watson, Jamon Kemp (son of former NBA great Shawn) and RaeQuan Battle in 2019, Beauchamp in 20 to a kid like Paolo Banchero in 2021, Seattle is producing 5 stars and top 100 prospects at a consistent level.

It's nice not to have to go up against lorenzo romar at uw. Even though he couldn't coach a lick, he'd probably have this guy locked up by now. I can't recall a single player, either football or basketball, recruited from the state of Washington. The closest I can think of is Chatman from Oregon. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone. Names, anyone?

The last two years will really help Michigan recruiting. We are now a legitimate elite team: top two and placing players into the NBA. We are now competing with Duke on equal grounds (except that Bellein has not coached the Olympics.)

Coach Beilein has long been a very good coach. Over the past 5-7 years he, to his great credit, has moved into the elite category. I think Yaklich, Washington and his assistants deserve some credit for assisting in this ascent. Look at this year's team...individually there are no particularly great, dominating players...but how these kids play the game as a unit is a thing of beauty. John has surely figured out how to make the sum of the parts greater than the whole...and in this game this is a big deal.

I like the balanced game of the kids John is recruiting. They are not so much the highlight reel kids-they just play the game very well. MarJon, Peavy...the kid from Benton Harbor...all fit the "Beilein" mold...I do hope he gets the Kessler kid-he fits wonderfully as well!
