The coaches poll should be renamed the "unpaid athletic department intern" poll cause that's who fills the damn thing out most weeks.

Coaches are too busy in-season doing the whole "coaching thing" to actually pay attention to what other teams are doing.  So they find the kid who cleans up, brings everybody coffee and donuts and such and they give them the form with the instructions "here....fill this thing out" and other pearls of wisdom.

The good news is that it doesnt matter one bit.  Not even one little bit what we are ranked by either poll right now or even on selection Sunday.

More like they remember every Virginia team that's ever existed under Tony Bennett. How is it that Virginia is supposed to be this amazing basketball program when they've made two final fours ever and none since '84? Michigan has matched their total in the last five years alone. I get it, they win a lot of games in the regular season, but man, they are so unimpressive in the post season

Honestly, I feel like you can throw the top 4 teams in a bag and pick one. Duke and Tennessee both have what I would consider "good" losses to Gonzaga and Kansas, respectively.

Of course, if you believe the fancystats rankings, Michigan is 3 to NET, 6 to Kenpom, 6 to Sagarin, and 5 to the Massey Composite.

UVA, a team that has proven itself literally incapable of winning games that matter, gets the benefit of the doubt from coaches for an unblemished record yet undefeated Michigan sits behind two one loss teams. That makes total sense to me.

If you're talking historical, sure, but this year's team has been pretty dominant. They curbstomped FSU, beat South Carolina by 17 in Columbia, won by 20 @ Clemson. There will be some movement this week in the polls at the top as Virginia plays at Duke and home against VT. They'll be in Raleigh in 2 weeks as well. For Michigan, just keep winning, #1 will come in time.

how is it that tennessee gets 13 first place votes and we only are getting 9?  i get the duke love, even if i disagree with it, but tennessee?

They have a win over then-#1 Gonzaga (now #5), better than anything we've done. Their only blemish is a neutral-site OT loss to #7/8 Kansas (still higher ranked than anybody we've played), and they've beaten the piss out of pretty much everybody else on their schedule.

thank you reggie.  i like our undefeated resume better, but at least now it makes some small part of sense.

i think the real reason is that we don't have the stable of sick athletes playing hoops, we have some very good athletes who play very smart and that isn't as sexy as the 1-and-done crowd.

This team is so fun to watch. I think the main positive for this team is that on offense we just have so much balance. Everybody is a threat in some way and they all have some unique abilities. Zavier has the ability to nail shots (it'd be nice if he could continue his play from northwestern but that's unlikely), and his feel for the offense along with his running hook are all huge for the team. Poole is always a threat to go off, Iggy is great on drives and can shoot, Teske has good awareness in the post and also can nail 3's, and Matthews has that interesting drive and fadeaway game. The variety they show is something JB's teams don't usually show until later in the year and the tournament. Really hope they can get the regular season B1G title and get a high seed.

I know it's not a simple process, but Gonzaga needs to join the Pac 12. They're a horrendous basketball conference and it's really grating to watch a supposed top 5 team play nobody but Pacific and Loyola Marymount for three months out of the season

NCAA's NET rankings also has Virginia at #1 with Duke #2 and Michigan #3. Doesn't really matter much as Michigan is still a 1 seed (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1/ncaa-mens-basketball-net-rankings)

I see the AP's logic at least... the coaches poll is a farce and should not be a thing for shootyhoops(or football but even more so here)

Between Tennessee with Rick Barnes and Bennett at UVa, lots of teams ranked above UM are coached by guys who bottom out in the post season.  So I'm not too worried.

To anyone getting bent about not being ranked one - just chill. Wins matter more than a stupid number by the team name. This isn't football. Basketball rankings are completely meaningless. If they win the Big Ten title (with just a few losses) and/or the conference tournament, they're a one seed.
