The SB Nation site for Boston College was NOT happy that he was being interviewed here.  This is a good hire.  Per Sam's article -

When it comes to recruiting, Campanile is a major presence in the Garden State. He hails from a family that is considered football royalty in North Jersey where his father is a coaching legend and several other family members have also been standouts as players and or coaches. That rich lineage and his own on-field and sideline accomplishments allow his to walk in virtually any door in his home state and be known. That worked to Boston College's advantage. Now it will work to Michigan's.

He is 69 years old.  He coached at Michigan for 13 years of his long coaching career.  There was over 20 years between his two stints here.  I find his departure to OSU coming directly from UM incredibly distasteful (and likely involves spite despite the apologists) but to call him a "UM lifer" is a bit of a stretch isn't it?

The Campanile Football Family of Northern New Jersey

They’ve got ties to several of the top northern New Jersey Catholic prep schools. LINK

Mike Campanile from 1990-1999 was head coach at Paramus Catholic where Jabrill Peppers, Rashan Gary and former Michigan player Drew Singleton played.  There, Mike coached his sons Vito who’s now head coach at Bergen Catholic and Nunzio who’s the previous head coach at Bergen Catholic and who coached running backs at Rutgers this past season.

Before joining Michigan, brother Anthony had been at Rutgers and Boston College after he’d been at Don Bosco Prep (Jabrill Peppers’ original high school before he transferred to Paramus Catholic).  Brother Nick’s the head coach at DePaul Catholic where Michael Dwumfour and Kareem Walker played.

There comes a point where returning to your alma mater isn’t an attractive option, nor a positive career move. Rutgers is probably at or near the top of the list.

Not to mention, he DID coach at Rutgers. Where they felt it was a good idea to take a guy with an almost entirely defensive background and have him coach the WRs and TEs.

So I spend summers in West Virginia, and I'm well known where I live as a rabid Michigan fan.  I've talked to some of the locals about this.  They're a bit wistful about Beilein going to Michigan, but they're not resentful.  They understand Michigan is a big step up, and they don't begrudge Beilein taking that step.

Their view of Rodriguez is different.  Their resentment over how all that went down still burns bright.  But the resentment is towards the man, not Michigan.

This guy missed his calling as the head of a Mafia crime family, who in his later years gets lazy and is executed with two shots from a .22 to the back of the head while walking to his limo from a restaurant...
