AZ Cardinals to trade Rosen and draft Murray?

Adam Schaffer is saying that it is not out of the question that Kingsbury and the Cardinals trade Rosen and draft Murray first overall.

Kingsbury has previously stated that he would draft Murray first overall, but he may have just been positively reinforcing him.

Drafting Murray would make watching the Cardinals a whole lot more enticing(thinking Baker in Cleveland), so who knows?

Why would Kingsbury have been positively reinforcing a kid who played for Texas A&M or Oklahoma?

I still think Murray will end up playing baseball (at least to start his career), so it's probably a moot point. I wouldn't take Murray #1, because it could end up being a wasted pick. It's not worth the risk to me if my job depends on getting the most out of my picks. If you draft him in the 1st round and he doesn't play football, you're probably going to get fired as a coach/GM within a couple years.

Fair points, especially the baseball/football fiasco.  I would say that Murray has a better chance of working out as a football player than he does a baseball player all things considered.

Also, to those that don’t think he is worth the first overall pick...Murray threw 42 touchdowns and 7 ints this year, and he ran for another 12 tds. His game translates really well to the NFL.

He's probably 5-9, so while he might be able to have some success in the NFL, will his body hold up against the size/speed of the NFL game?

Besides, if he turns into a 20/40 player in baseball, he'll make way more money in the long run. He road to a starting NFL gig is much shorter than in baseball, but he definitely has a tough decision to make.

It often takes a significant amount of time to progress through the minors in baseball. He's likely looking at a minimum of three years before he'd get an opportunity in the majors. If he's taking five years off from baseball, that would make him almost 30 by the time he was big league ready. At that rate he'd probably never get that huge contract that comes after a player is arbitration eligible.

I've seen that number (20ish) being a possible HR projection.

Yeah I probably stated that wrong. I meant that he could have a long career in the NFL, by either being a starter, backup, or finding another position ala Randall El. You don't make it to the majors and stick unless you are hitting .280 or better, or hitting bombs, and he doesn't look like the bomb hitting type.

Not every failed starter gets a spot as a backup, just like not every first round pick in MLB makes the pros.

Assuming he never materializes into anything, he would make more money upfront in the NFL (roughly $30M if he is the first overall pick down to around $10M if he is picked in the end of the first round) compared to his $5M signing bonus in baseball.

I feel weird sharing this, but this guy who refs basketball games in Texas claims to be Murray's cousin. I've spoken to this "cousin" a few times while I was working basketball games at my high school and he states Murray does not plan to play baseball. Yeah, I know, not exactly concrete info. I'll leave now.

Murray is making a big mistake choosing football over baseball, IMHO.  If it’s his true passion, fine.  But long-term earnings and long-term health considerations should push him to baseball.

You are assuming he makes it to the majors. That is no guarantee. If he goes the football route, he will get a signing bonus and at least 3 years of roster money and endorsements. Baseball is a different animal. You get your signing bonus and the rest is up to you.

I have this discussion with a co-worker who gets all bent out of shape of the Tigers even talk about trading a prospect. You could have Baseball America's top ten in your farm system and still end up with nothing more than journey-men. Depending on how long he gets stuck in the minors, after abitration ends, he could be 28 before he signs the second contract. That assumes he actually gets a second contract.
