Exit: David Long
We think this is the last of this year's early NFL attrition, or at least the last of the expected type:

Long and returning battery mate Lavert Hill spent the last two years as the best corner pair in the country and the subject of nigh weekly Pro Football Focus tweets about the ludicrously low quarterback ratings of those who chose to throw the ball in their directions. Long fell behind due to his freshman injury and remained one of the least remarked stars in Michigan memory, but also edged out Hill in the tempo-free stats and charting. It will be hard to talk about one without the other next year, but getting either back is a grand coup.
As mentioned, Michigan does get back Lavert Hill as well as budding star Ambry Thomas and a very long line of super-tall guys they recruited in 2017 and 2018. As of now Vincent Gray and Myles Sims appear to have a slight lead on Ben St-Juste, Gemon Green, the incoming freshmen, and a safety or two who might move back outside.

Go get that cheddar young man. Thank you for being a Wolverine.

David Long: Pure Class.
Good luck to you and thank you.

Not a shock but I do think it’s absolutely puzzling he didn’t even check where NFL scouts felt he would go, seems he was always gonna go pro after this year short of being a disaster. What if his grade would have shocked him with how low it was? Makes me think he didn’t even want to think about that possibility. Luckily for him, I still think he’s a second round pick. Absolute best of luck, it was awesome watching you play. I hope more elite California athletes follow his path.

I don't think this is a Donovan Warren situation. Long has been dominant for two straight years. A third consecutive dominant year wasn't gonna help him that much. He doesn't have much left to prove in college. The combine and evaluation will tell us whether Long is in the same breath as Byron Murphy and DeAndre Baker.
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:17 PM ^
How do you know he didn't get his draft grades? Did I miss something?
January 2nd, 2019 at 7:33 PM ^
You must have...he said so directly.
There's also a limit per team that can be requested. Perhaps he gave his up for someone else more marginal?
January 2nd, 2019 at 6:22 PM ^
What kind of money does a 2nd round pick get? I don’t really follow the NFL.
January 2nd, 2019 at 6:45 PM ^
Instant millionaire
January 2nd, 2019 at 6:49 PM ^
Ya, he's going to be just fine. Hell, the league minimum is like 500K.
January 2nd, 2019 at 9:34 PM ^
You still have to make the team. NFL money is not guaranteed like it is in the NBA
January 2nd, 2019 at 6:59 PM ^
But somehow it’s not enough money to finish his degree if he only lasts a few years in the league. /s
January 2nd, 2019 at 3:48 PM ^
any word on Hudson?
last to state a decision
January 2nd, 2019 at 3:52 PM ^
His fired up speech to his teammates tells me he is the captain of that squad next year. That wasn't a speech of someone planning on leaving.
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:22 PM ^
My thoughts exactly. And his inspired play after as well. Had the appearance of a guy who hasn’t quit. Although, he could have just decided he didn’t want to go out like that.
January 2nd, 2019 at 3:48 PM ^
I loved pulling long out of CA at the end of the 2016 class. He was a great player on the defense that would have started for just about every team in the country. I hope Jalen Perry can be this class’ David Long.
January 2nd, 2019 at 3:49 PM ^
I don't expect we will really feel his loss. The defensive performance will be determined solely by the play of the defensive line.
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:30 PM ^
I agree DL will be a bigger factor for the defensive performance.. and that's kinda depressing.
January 2nd, 2019 at 7:42 PM ^
Although one feeds off the other.
If our coverage seemed a bit weaker this year, it was because we didn’t get push up the middle of the DL, thus allowing QBs to step up into the pocket as Gary & Winovich flanked the OTs.
OTOH, if our back 4-5 can be really strong, it gives our young/mediocre DL the opportunity for “coverage sacks” if the QB can’t find anybody open because the WRs are wearing our DBs forever as the latest fashion trend.
January 2nd, 2019 at 8:20 PM ^
Either way, defense is going to take a step back. Offense is going to have to step up.
This is no longer a theoretical discussion.
January 2nd, 2019 at 9:14 PM ^
M-Dog glad to see you getting after it.
New OC Mr. Harbaugh.
No excuses.
January 2nd, 2019 at 3:51 PM ^
Where does that leave us in terms of scholarships, if there is no further attrition? How many more players can we sign in February?
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:26 PM ^
I thought there was a B1G limit of 25 signees per class. Is that still in effect?
January 2nd, 2019 at 6:50 PM ^
Even if it is, pretty sure they can still backdate the early enrollees to the prior year's class, assuming there's room.
January 2nd, 2019 at 5:25 PM ^
We are still 4 over the limit so more attrition is coming.
January 2nd, 2019 at 3:54 PM ^
It was a joy to watch you play in your time here. Despite some angry fan reaction over the last several weeks, you and your teammates have built a solid foundation and a strong legacy for Michigan football, from which they can grow and expand into the future.
January 2nd, 2019 at 3:55 PM ^
Wow, losing a lot of next year’s seniors to the league. I always liked Long best of our corners, but there wasn’t much difference between him and Hill. Teams seemed to avoid him more, I thought. Both great players. Happy to have one back, and best of luck to Long.
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:05 PM ^
Congrats to the young man and I look forward to seeing him on Sundays. Any idea on expected draft position?
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:36 PM ^
I'm no Mel Kiper Jr., but I'd guess he's a late 2nd or 3rd round guy.
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:42 PM ^
I agree with that. I think mid 3rd is most likely.
January 2nd, 2019 at 11:50 PM ^
I'd love to see him playing here in Denver.
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:10 PM ^
This man pressed Simmie Cobbs into an early grave and they never threw at him again.
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:24 PM ^
He will be a very good pro I think.
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:52 PM ^
Great player. Seemingly better person. Go get it kid.
January 2nd, 2019 at 4:59 PM ^
Thanks for everything David, best of luck for your future.
(That's a strangely old, romantic background image.)
January 2nd, 2019 at 5:01 PM ^
So, Long, farewell.
January 2nd, 2019 at 5:13 PM ^
My first selfish reaction was damn. But I suspect it's the right move for David. Best of luck, young man. You were a hell of a player for the Maize and Blue.
January 2nd, 2019 at 5:15 PM ^
Brought tears to my eyes. Thank YOU! and BEST of LUCK!! GO BLUE!!
January 2nd, 2019 at 5:22 PM ^
Considering they had 30 commits 2 years ago, I think not. Early enrollees offset the number.
January 2nd, 2019 at 5:35 PM ^
class
I won’t be surprised if he has more success off the field after a long successful NFL career.
Go Blue!
January 2nd, 2019 at 6:02 PM ^
Good player but go make your money.
At the rate he seems to need to come out of the game due to injury he may not be long for football
January 2nd, 2019 at 6:06 PM ^
If Lions don’t get Greedy Long would be a great pick in round two. Darius Slay part two.
January 3rd, 2019 at 1:00 AM ^
Sure as hell hope not for his sake. Worst franchise in sports - and it's not close.
January 2nd, 2019 at 6:25 PM ^
Most boring corner ever. I love boring corners.
I'm not quite sure I agree with Ambry being labeled as a "budding star" as far as his DB responsibilities go as he didn't show that much in coverage during his limited reps. More like a fingers-crossed-please-please-be-as-productive-as-you-are-atheletic-star.
January 2nd, 2019 at 8:23 PM ^
Couldn't ask for any more out of a young man representing Michigan on and off the field.
Best of luck!
January 2nd, 2019 at 9:17 PM ^
Vaya con Dios David Long.
January 2nd, 2019 at 9:31 PM ^
Good luck, thanks for the memories.
January 2nd, 2019 at 10:29 PM ^
Saw David play at Loyola in LA.
Loved him going to M, wish him the best.
In 30 years I know most of these guys will long for their days at M. I just wish someone would make them realize that their Senior year at college is their most important.
January 3rd, 2019 at 1:19 AM ^
Glad for him. Would have loved him coming back - but he is very solid.
With both Hill and Long, the key will be learning how not to get called for the quick grab of the jersey off the line. NFL will flag that 50+% of the time. CFB it depended on which B1G crew we had.
Still...played the bowl game. Thank you for that.
I also appreciated Zach doing the same but think HE was a guy who could have made more coming back next year (assuming JH perks up the O with a more prolific passing game).
