Michigan commits impressing at All-American practices
Observations by Rivals head guy, Mike Farrell:
Mazi Smith, Trente Jones and Quentin Johnson all listed in his top ten stock risers. He's been consistent in his praise of Mazi. Nice to hear when DT is the position of greatest need.

More consolation like the song “Tomorrow” from Annie.

The incessant bitching on here is irritating and pointless.
January 1st, 2019 at 6:00 PM ^
Amen. Seems to be coming from the same dipshits.
January 1st, 2019 at 6:14 PM ^
They all seem to have joined in the last couple of months...
January 1st, 2019 at 8:39 PM ^
Yes, they are called trolls.
January 1st, 2019 at 7:08 PM ^
Amen to your Amen.

Agreed. A handful have ruined the board the last few weeks. Unfortunately, some of them probably believe they are tru Michigan fans who simply drag down the whole discourse. A portion of the fan base who should just spend more time reading and far less typing.

Quick, someone ask JPC if he's willing to bet his bottom dollar!
January 1st, 2019 at 6:47 PM ^
God...you whine more than my 2 year old grandkid. Does Moomy need to change your diaper?
January 1st, 2019 at 8:38 PM ^
Hi Mr. Troll.
January 1st, 2019 at 5:50 PM ^
Mazi going to come in and be a great DT for us. Can’t wait.
January 1st, 2019 at 8:40 PM ^
We're gonna need him, the sooner the better.
January 1st, 2019 at 5:51 PM ^
Mazi will be in the two deep next year for sure.
January 1st, 2019 at 5:52 PM ^
Hinton as well
January 1st, 2019 at 6:05 PM ^
We will see, he'll have a chance. I thought Smith would be more college ready, but the clips of Hinton that I've seen this week look good. Dwumfour, Kemp, Jeter, Smith, Hinton will probably be the 5 main guys vying for a 4-man rotation in the interior. I'm hoping Jeter can take a big step and start at NT. I'd be comfortable with Dwumfour and Jeter backed up by Hinton and Smith.
January 1st, 2019 at 6:13 PM ^
I think you just named all the interior DL on the roster

See comment below.

Don't we only have 5 DTs on scholarship? Two deep shouldn't be all that difficult.
January 1st, 2019 at 6:09 PM ^
Hard to say, probably not though. The staff just takes big athletes and figures out their positions later. Welschof, Upshaw, Morris could all be DTs as soon as spring. Dwumfour, Kemp, Smith and even Hinton have some 3T/NT versatility too. We should be good.
January 1st, 2019 at 6:15 PM ^
What is Welshof's projected playing position? From my Peach Bowl seats 18 rows up from the end of the Michigan bench, I was surprised how tall he is.
January 1st, 2019 at 6:20 PM ^
Either Anchor or 3T, but I'm sure his future at Anchor will be determined by 3T depth and the development of other Anchors.
January 1st, 2019 at 6:28 PM ^
“Projected position” depends on how big he can get and remain athletically viable. As a recruit he was a 6-6 250 lb SDE (Gary’s position essentially). If he can build up to 290+ and still remain athletic enough to be a contributor, a slide inside is likely. Same with Morris. If he can put on enough good weight to move inside, it’s likely that he does so.
Sometimes it’s more advantageous to get athletic DE types with big frames and put them in a college weight room and bulk them up to 290+ than it is to get a kid out of high school that’s already over 300 lbs. It’s rare to get a DT out of high school that has enough “good weight” to be a viable option early in his career. If you can get a good frame on a 250 lb kid and spend a year putting 35-40 lbs of muscle on him, the results are probably going to be better than that 320 lb kid you get out of high school.
Carlo Kemp comes to mind as a comparison. 6-3 255 as a recruit (prior to that he was smaller and recruited by many as a linebacker). Put him in a college weight room and he’s bulked up to over 280 lbs and he’s now a viable option inside. Conversely, if a player’s max playing weight is in the 260ish range, obviously you’re going to keep him at end.

Mazi, Hinton, Dwumfour, Kemp and Jeter should allow us to be fine on the D-Line interior, just not much depth - any of the SDE's able to slide inside?

is mazi smith an ee?
January 1st, 2019 at 7:09 PM ^
Yes. There was a note in one of the articles on him that he is home for one day after the AA game before enrolling at M.
January 1st, 2019 at 5:53 PM ^
Great to see. Mazi is a lot bigger than I thought. Good to know we have 2 very good (maybe great) safeties in this class.
of course OSU lands another speedy WR that will eventually be a star, that Jameson kid reminds me of Parris Campbell
January 1st, 2019 at 5:55 PM ^
Too bad Charbonnet is injured
January 1st, 2019 at 6:14 PM ^
it's good
otherwise he could get the dreaded 5th star
January 1st, 2019 at 6:09 PM ^
We talking about practice??????
January 1st, 2019 at 6:19 PM ^
OSU false starts on the punt and no call. THat's about 10 no calls on them so far.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:20 PM ^
Anyone who actually watched the Suckeyes play today is stronger than I am. Stayed away.
January 1st, 2019 at 6:25 PM ^
Can't wait to see these kids suit up for Meeeechigan!!
GO BLUE!!
January 1st, 2019 at 6:28 PM ^
We have many great players. Unfortunately we seem to have many weaknesses in the way we deploy them that makes them less impactful than their ability would suggest.
January 1st, 2019 at 7:06 PM ^
Smith looked huge, like real huge.
January 1st, 2019 at 7:15 PM ^
When doesnt an allstar game invitee impress in practice?
January 1st, 2019 at 7:34 PM ^
You obviously didn't bother to read the article.
Former commit Te'cory Crouch and a former top QB target (and PSU commit) Michael Johnson were on his list of disappointments. There are always going to be some.
January 1st, 2019 at 7:48 PM ^
Trente Jones a surprise, eh??? Well...then you have not been paying attention...the kid can play. There is talent in the trenches of this class to compete well.
January 1st, 2019 at 8:17 PM ^
On 247 Mazi Smith made the top 5 for most impressive defensive players in day 2. Say he's been great both days so far. He looks like a tank
MSU signee Julian Barnett was #1 on their list for day 2
247 had Zach Charbonett on 5 star watch but he's injured
January 1st, 2019 at 10:09 PM ^
Yes, but can any of them call offensive plays? But seriously though, very excited about Mazi Smith.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:18 PM ^
We have a good class coming in. Onward!
