When does ROI begin to factor in JH's Rating? ROI would factor in every other area of business or sports, but somehow Michigan doesn't consider it.
If I'm paying a salesman a salary that is top 3 in the country and by the end of his 4th year he still hasn't been anything but the 2nd-3rd best salesman in the Midwest then we have problems. He was hired to win B10 Championships, beat OSU and get us into the Playoff. That was why he is paid what he is paid.
His performance has been consistent over 4 years and there are exactly zero key indicators that he has any momentum going in the direction of improvement or that He as a Coach knows what to do to get his team "over the top" and he has expressed.
2018 Harbaugh Rating= "D"...and if same result next year..."F" and should be removed (or if you believe we cant get a better Coach) then renegotiate his salary and pay him what he is worth which is around $4 million a year. But there is no reason on Earth to pay this man what he is making thus far.
December 30th, 2018 at 11:09 AM ^
Salaries for entertainers (and that's all coaches and athletes are) have and always will be about what you negotiate for. Not value, not worth, but what you can get on the free market. Plan and simple.
December 30th, 2018 at 11:10 AM ^
Remember pre-Harbaugh when we had trouble selling tickets? What was it, two cokes for a ticket?
Using the salesman analogy, he sure has changed things and we again have a waiting list of buyers.
December 30th, 2018 at 11:32 AM ^
A couple more years of getting blown out by OSU and then losing a winnable bowl game might not get us back to "buy two cokes" level, but the shine of Harbaugh is GONE.
If he doesn't win the B1G next year, he's going to be a dead man walking.

Overall we were average and underperformed And never made the right adjustments based on game situations when another team punched us in the MOUTH! KInda disappointing

Head coach = offensive coordinator
December 30th, 2018 at 1:49 AM ^
Yup. When will people accept this? Harbaugh runs our offense.
December 30th, 2018 at 8:51 AM ^
Ok, so what? In his role as OC, Harbaugh gets a D. Fair, in my opinion... Especially if Harbaugh's self assigned duties as OC included designing passing plays and WR routes.
People keep repeating this "Harbaugh is the OC" as if it's some kind of talisman, and I don't understand why. Whether he does or does not function as the OC, the offense wilted against meaningful competition, way underutilized the WRs, and couldn't keep the defense off the field when it mattered. And in either case, pep is a waste of money: either he has no role or impact ("Harbaugh is the OC"), or he sucks.
December 30th, 2018 at 10:48 AM ^
Pep sucks. I know that for sure
December 30th, 2018 at 12:06 PM ^
Yep. There's a reason that rumors come out every year about Pep looking around at different jobs, yet no one ends up hiring him.
December 30th, 2018 at 12:34 PM ^
Pep doesn’t suck, but he and JH together are not a great match. Too dogmatic with neither one a creative risk taker. Jedd was a better match to give the offense a creative play just when it was needed. Keeping Drevno and letting Jedd go was a mistake. It will be interesting how the self-scout goes this off season.
December 30th, 2018 at 11:54 AM ^
Either way dude! He wore 2 hats, as a head coach GE gets a B ABD as a OC he gets a D... not hard to figure out
December 30th, 2018 at 3:01 AM ^
I’m confused why you would say we’re average but give out above average grades for everything except one thing. Not talking smack just noticed that.
December 30th, 2018 at 3:47 AM ^
Probably because the players played above the coaching deficiency
December 30th, 2018 at 9:00 AM ^
Meh, it's a cute narrative that the players are incredible but the coaches let them down. I doubt it's true though, as there was no shortage of big drops, missed blocks, skipped games, etc.
December 30th, 2018 at 9:51 AM ^
At least one coach was able to admit that...
December 30th, 2018 at 8:52 AM ^
Harbaugh receiving a B is a huge mistake he should get a D
December 30th, 2018 at 10:09 AM ^
The hiring of Ed Warinner, Dan Enos, and Jim McElwain alone make him get better than a D, right?
December 30th, 2018 at 1:50 AM ^
The only difference between this year and last year was Shea Patterson’s talent level compared to JOK.
The Dline regressed. WRs were finally thrown to because of said QB upgrade albeit barely. RB was the same if not worse since Evans is a shell of his former self. TEs got worse. CBs about the same. Safeties LOL. Oline improved but still lacks talent at both tackle positions.
Yep...
Harbaugh: C
Brown: B-
Warinner: A
Harbaugh Jr: B-
Pep: D+
Mattison: B-
McElwain: ?
Still feel like I’m taking crazy pills whenever Michigan does something positive involving a QB run, RPO or WR pass and then INEXPLICABLY goes away from it forthe rest of the game.
December 30th, 2018 at 8:29 AM ^
Regarding the Warinner one, I think if we're breaking down coaching with grades, then he definitely gets an "A" from me as well. Considering where the offensive line was at this point last year and where it is now, there is marked improvement - from "meh on a good day" to "serviceable, but not quite great yet". He did quite a bit of work in one season and it showed.
December 30th, 2018 at 9:53 AM ^
That's a fact! What Warinner did was amazing. OL went from a train wreck to being quite good at times.
December 30th, 2018 at 12:20 PM ^
Ehhhhhhh shouldn't be too hard to look good against the mid-tier B1G teams of the world. Let me know when our OL looks cumpetent against a tough opponent.
December 30th, 2018 at 9:55 AM ^
Struggling with this one. If we grade on a curve (i.e., improvement), agree with the A. If we are grading on results, I think the O line was still one of the main weaknesses of the team. It certainly wasn't the train wreck it was in 2017, but it was a huge part of the losses.
December 30th, 2018 at 9:54 AM ^
WRs were open a lot, and were always looking for someone to block when the ball was coming their way. WRs were not open like that, at all, last year. Jim McElwain should probably get an A for changing that so much in 1 year.

It was a solid while disappointing season. It definitely exceeded preseason expectations regarding wins and losses, but the blowout loss to Ohio state was terrible. No way we were contending in the playoffs with our obvious lack of depth.
December 30th, 2018 at 2:01 AM ^
C- for coaches. Harbaugh and Brown failed.
The winged helmet should be good for 7-8 wins per year. Coaching gets you the rest.
C+ for players. They did the best they could.
December 30th, 2018 at 11:00 AM ^
I agree with your take. I don't understand the posters rating Brown anything above a C after the last two games.
He needs to get his shit together or find another job. Promote Mattison back to DC if you have to. Or at least make him teach Brown zone coverage and the concept of bend but not break.
December 30th, 2018 at 2:04 AM ^
A- for players
Clear improvement everywhere, just stubborn coaching that isn’t adapting defensively and is unimaginative offensively.
Pep should move on and Jay Harbaugh should go cut his teeth somewhere else.
Michigan Football could learn a lot from their neighbor. John Beilein delegated to a great assistant coach when he knew he was at a disadvantage. Hire an OC and let them do the playcalling. This committee thing of run game and pass game coordinators who have no clear roles isn’t working in the B1G like it did for him out west.
December 30th, 2018 at 8:23 AM ^
Do we have a coach humble enough to do all that? I think not unfortunately.
December 30th, 2018 at 9:53 AM ^
I’m in full agreement with you WD!
I don’t think it’s going to take massive changes for Michigan to be great! I’m just afraid we may be too hard-headed to make the necessary changes..

B won’t win a B1G title or concern the best teams.
Whatever is beyond BPONE is where I find myself tonight. I look into the abyss and feel like falling forward.
But I won’t. And neither will any of us. Tomorrow is the first day of a new year. Suck it up.

Michigan beat no one of consequence [again].

December 30th, 2018 at 8:32 AM ^
People love to (rightfully) insult the Lions on this board, but I’ve yet to figure out what the difference is between Michigan football 2007 to present and what the Lions were under Caldwell. The only big difference is college football has more tomato cans on the schedule than the NFL does, but neither one got/gets many wins against any of the really good teams they play(ed). It’s the 4th year of Harbaugh, what team(s) would you say were legitimately good that Michigan beat? I’ve got two: 16 PSU and 16 Wisconsin. 2 in 4 years. That’s an F all day.
December 30th, 2018 at 8:53 AM ^
This is utter horseshit revisionist history. Beating Wisconsin, penn state, and Michigan state we’re absolutely of consequence, especially Michigan state. Even though they weren’t great teams, they were teams of consequences...all three of them.
The offense wasn’t ready in Notre Dame, the coaches laid a giant egg in Columbus, and we had a defensive game plan for players that weren’t able to execute it.
December 30th, 2018 at 9:58 AM ^
Bunch of 7-win teams.
December 30th, 2018 at 10:39 AM ^
Wisconsin and MSU were both 7-5, and PSU was 9-3.
Michigan should beat 7-5 teams consistently and the blowout of 9-3 PSU is a nice win no doubt about it.
December 30th, 2018 at 11:32 AM ^
Harbaugh has a 3-10 record in bowl and rivalry games. That’s 23%. He’s paid to win those games, plain and simple. Of those wins, 2 of which were undoubtedly against the worst of the 13 teams he played against (MSU 16 and 18). How can you defend that?
December 30th, 2018 at 9:59 AM ^
"Michigan beat no one of consequence"
That's not true. They dominated Wisconsin, Michigan St, and Penn St. No one did that to even one of those teams this year. Michigan did it to all 3.
December 30th, 2018 at 10:40 AM ^
At the end of the day only ONE of those teams were of consequence.
Michigan is 1-9 against teams who FINISHED in the top 10. 2016 Penn State is the only W.
December 30th, 2018 at 10:54 AM ^
Teams of consequence, as you call it, played those teams. None of them dominated even 1 of those teams.
December 30th, 2018 at 12:07 PM ^
These are self fulfilling prophecies. If we beat them there is a low likelihood they finish in the top 10. So If we win it’s “yay, you beat a team of medial consequence” if we lose it’s a loss to another top ten team. Sure I’d rather win, but you can’t deny the logic. It’s rather silly.
December 30th, 2018 at 11:39 AM ^
Northwestern (8-4) on the road was a win of consequence - especially since NU won the West.
Elite team? No.
January 1st, 2019 at 12:23 PM ^
Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan State were "no one of consequence" ... sorry this is just a wrong take. But I get it, we were more like 3-3 against the highest ranked teams on our schedule. The 3 teams we lost to are all top 10 teams ... we need to win more of those games to get elite status. We have needs that were addressed in this new recruiting class. The coaches get it.
December 30th, 2018 at 3:20 AM ^
C- for both. It would have been an A until the last two games.
December 30th, 2018 at 1:03 PM ^
I think every single poster saying this year was terrible and JH needs to go would agree that before the last 2 games this season was an A. But that's not good enough so break out the torch and pitchforks!! Yarrgh!!

Harbaugh needs to do some serious soul searching.
I can’t believe a guy who played QB in the NFL for ten years doesn’t understand tempo when you are down three scores.
I can’t believe a guy who has coached a team to the Super Bowl waists two time outs, burns 35 seconds and runs the clock down to 18 seconds just to attempt a long field goal. Try to score the damn ball and at least get better field position.
I can’t believe anyone ever punts the ball down three scores with 6 minutes in the game Even from your fucking one yard line. If you punt in that situation you guarantee defeat.
I can’t believe our defense thought they were playing flag football.
