New offseason, new moderator sticky.

What this thread is for: It's an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

Don't comment in this thread unless you have to: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted (see: "cumbrously long").

--------------------------------------

Things we moderate a lot:

  1. Politics. Don’t you get enough of this everywhere else?
  2. Noise/snowflakes. We ask our moderators to try really hard not to censor ideas but some ideas are so tiresome and retread and badly argued that they’re not worth keeping around. If you’re getting a substantial amount of downvotes we’ll look to see if you’re posting an unpopular opinion that you can support. If you can’t support it politely and rationally, or if you don’t acknowledge the holes in your argument, it’s noise.
  3. Useless content from other sites. Clickbait is annoying. 247, WTKA always get the benefit of the doubt.
  4. The Drew Sharp Memorial Don’t Feed the Professional Trolls Rule. Pete Finebaum has taken the place of the late Sharp. Valenti and Chatsports are the other two on the ban list. Bleacher Report is off the list but still under close observation.
  5. Bewbs and general misogyny/objectifying of women. We tried one year of this and our female readership shot up after being really low. This means it’s a good rule: however much you enjoy cutting loose with the guys, we have tens of thousands of readers it drives away.

Hall of Stickies Past:

The first, the second, the third. the fourth. The fifth. The sixth. The seventh.

Hi Seth! Longtime lurker/avid blog reader who just decided to start posting finally. Thinking I've hit the 100 post mark yet to be able to start voting/creating threads/etc, but for some reason it's still not letting me do these things. Please Advise. Thanks so much for your time and efforts.

Account RedGreene has been banned.  Negative points and a recent posting history that's pretty bad.  Three full screens of account history that look almost exactly like this.

Zach Gentry undecided on going pro after this season

Thread was going downhill fast. Took it down because he is currently on the roster.

Please take a look at JOHNNAVARREISMYHERO. Seems like either a troll or just a miserable turd. The comments are personal and crushing. We don’t need that crap here.

I am trying to imagine how anyone could articulate a good reason for the removal of the post titled, “In Praise of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.”

And honestly, I haven’t come up with anything.

I left it up yesterday but I guessed it would get locked or taken down eventually because it was inviting too many internet tough guys to flex their opinions about Michigan players who didn't play in the bowl games, and those have been turning poisonous. Don't know who took it down but I'm not that surprised.

Section 1.8

December 30th, 2018 at 1:49 PM ^

What I’d like to say for the record, Seth, is that the post itself did NOT pose any specific attack on any Michigan player or former team member.  It was an unusually well-written post that was framed almost purely in terms of respect for Gardner-Johnson’s decision to play, which I thought was an amazingly clever and thoughtful way to approach the essential question.

And let’s remember a couple of other things.  The essential question is an important, pressing, highly debatable question for Michigan and all of college football; how to address the problem of players abandoning their teams in the midst of their eligibility (and scholarship grants-in-aid) and before they have entered the NFL, so as to avoid any risk of injury and preserve their perceived/presumed NFL draft value.  It is precisely the kind of thing that should be debated at a forum like MGoBlog.

And it is not a subject that has been off limits.  (Nor should it be.). It was “debated” (from basically one angle) by MGoBloggers when Nick Bosa left the OSU.  It is debated — albeit from one side only — when various MGoBloggers comment about how they want to thank and congratulate Devin Bush, Karan Higdon, Rashan’s Gary, etc. on their contributions to Michigan football and how those players clearly and obviously made the one and only right decision to move on to “the League” without risk of injury.

Seth, your response here is a credible one, at least from your personal perspective.  In previous years my response to this ill-advised and seemingly inexcusable moderation choice (not your action, I understand) would have been to re-create the deleted OP, substituting the name of Jake Butt or Chase Winovich for the deleted Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.  As a test of moderation principles.

But instead I’ll just leave this response here for your benefit.  In a word, if I were a moderator concerned about inappropriate comments following an excellent OP, I would delete the offending comments and not the excellent OP.

Gregg Henson claiming Nordin gone, team sources refuting

Dropped post because Gregg Henson isn’t a reliable source.

Harbaughlin

December 31st, 2018 at 11:19 PM ^

Please note my intention was never to even have that be about the Nordin thing... more about what is going on that Gregg Henson? who used to actually be a legit Michigan source and is now fighting with people on twitter and having a damn near Mental breakdown when called out by Michigan fan's that he's straight up making up stories.

The Mod who edited my post turned it into Nordin leaving post. I would have deleted it myself if we had the ability once he edited because the "fixed post" in no way what I was even asking about. Either way its probably best removed but Just FWIW I would never consider that man a legit source to post about.

I edited it because I wasn't interested in going another 5 rounds with Henson. I've said before why Henson info is tricky but I'll repeat it here because it goes to how to moderate threads from him. There are some former players who, like the rest of the fanbase, will get frustrated with the program and want to bitch. But they also have some access to the program and get to know things that go on in Schembechler Hall, and a few are known to blow off steam by blasting it out to an email list of media who cover Michigan. They don't bother to BCC so I can see everyone else on the "To:" line that it goes to, and Henson is one of them.

Henson will sometimes take stuff from those email blasts and run with them. He's also got no concept of grace or legit peer review, so when people question him or the context he gets crazy defensive and turns into a jackass.

The public gets so little from inside the program that context is lost when they do hear a thing. This is not about Nordin but other stories I've gotten: If a player gets into a fight with Harbaugh and leaves practice, has he left the team? If Harbaugh tells him to clean out his locker, is he off the team? Not necessarily; in fact often that stuff gets resolved. A common story is the player quits, calls his parents to say he's coming home, and the parents say "Not without a degree you're not!" I'd wager half of all college players have made up their mind to transfer at some point.

From our perspective, attacking him on the board--even if it's a user and not one of us--usually results in a long email chain (if not a public twitter fight) about sources and shit because Gregg doesn't know the difference between someone on our message board posting a thing and us posting a thing.

Sometimes it's best to just delete the thread and that was probably the right call. Other times i might edit the thread to try to add some context. In this case I got the same email with the same rumor, and since there was some truth to it (as far as I knew) I didn't want to go 9 rounds on sourcing.

Does anyone know the real reason Solomon transferred during the season?

Probably best to not have this discussion again.

This guy is just dropping some casual racist epithets in a thread that is a real cess pool, like every thread here lately:

This is a place for discourse. When done correctly people don’t need to be told what they should think. I think that’s where you might be a tad confused. The fact that you stated “what they need to hear” makes me think you might just be trolling.

Hei2man

I agree it's a place for discourse, which makes it all the more confusing when people down vote something just because they don't like it and can't factually argue.

This one too. I know I invited some vitriol with how I wrote the article but anyone hoping a guy dies for taking a better job because of football rivalry doesn't have their priorities right. Comment deleted, user sent to Bolivia.

Subject of the offense has been discussed a whole bunch. Probably not enough substance here to retread the whole discussion again.

It was maybe premature to lock the thread. I emailed Seth after the second post came up. There was also some Twitter buzz about the same time.  I locked the thread this morning because the article was released in the wee hours of the night and I was being precautionary.

Could a mod (or Seth) turn on comments for the Northwestern preview on the front page? Looks like it was published with commenting turned off.
