Devin Bush: Michigan's 83rd Consensus All-American

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on December 14th, 2018 at 4:19 PM

First team All-American honors by the AFCA, FWAA, Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News and the Walter Camp Football Foundation have made Devin Bush, Jr. the 83rd Consensus All-American in Michigan Football history.

Bush is Michigan's 184th First Team All-American and he just narrowly missed out on becoming a Unanimous All-American. AP was the only official selector who didn't name Bush to their first team.

Michigan has had 5 Consensus All-Americans in the last 3 years.

Michigan as a program had just 1 (David Molk) from 2008-2015.

I see what you're doing...

But this kid had offers from FSU, Auburn, Florida, Notre Dame, Texas, etc. Consensus 4 star. Was Under Armour All-American. Top 200 in Rivals and ESPN. Not exactly someone fans would bitch about for getting an offer.

I think JH takes a more professional approach and along the lines of (don’t kill me here) Bill Belichick,  where they don’t care about sizzle and hype and try to look at the player and evaluate.  A prime example is Ronnie Bell.  Also I think JH focuses on certain aspects of play that a player can do well and will have them do that rather that, so players are more successful rather than having weaknesses exposed, Josh Uche comes to mind, that kid can pass rush at an all conference level no reason to have him cover a flat.

For me the interesting thing to look back on was that Michigan lost in-state David Reese in their pursuit of Devin Bush that year. Reese started as a freshman and made Freshman All-American teams while Bush sat behind Ben Gedeon in 2016. But I think there is no question that Michigan's prioritization of Devin Bush looks wise now. Reese probably would have been good here, and he has had a good career at Florida as a 3-year starter, but no Devin Bush.

Crazy that Michigan will line up against David Reese for a second time in the Peach Bowl too.

Omg I’m so glad we got this non-5 star. He really helped us keep Ohio State under 70 points with all their top 50 players on offense!!!!

I get what you’re doing and Devin Bush is great. There is little doubt about that. But guess what? 11 Top 100 guys usually beat 11 top 350-caliber guys. We discovered that pretty easily in Columbus this year. Teams in the SEC and ACC have discovered that for the last decade against Alabama and Clemson.

I still can't bring myself to say the Bush is for certain better than David Harris.

But I can't say for certain that he's worse, either.

Go forth to the league and get paid, young man.

So you're saying he's equal to David Harris.  Not >, not <...must be =.

I cannot remember a better Michigan MLB than Devin Bush.  And I've been watching since 1986.  He is definitely first team on my personal All Michigan team.  Bush combined the instincts and tackling ability of Harris and the speed of Ian Gold (but faster!).

I would love to have him lead the defense as a senior but he is most likely a first rounder already so I wouldn't be surprised if he went to the NFL.  Whatever he chooses I pray for success and health.  It was an honor watching him.

If you’re ever in the innards of Schembechler walk up the ramp between the locker room and the coaches offices. It’s probably 40 yds of All-American portraits and brought a chill up my spine as I got around the 1960’s to the present. Devin is a fine addition to the wall.

Gonna miss him bad.

Good thing there were three of him at LB, so we still have two left.

Wait . . . what?  It only felt like there were three of him at LB?

I remember looking at his HS film and thinking that he would be good at Michigan but would be hampered by his size.

I was wrong.  He turned out to be great.

Congrats to him! Well deserved. He definitely fits into my contention that we put maybe too much emphasis on this 3, 4 or 5 “Star” thing.

Go Blue! And congrats to Devin! I’d love to see him stay another year but couldn’t blame him if he left. Whale of a player who'll have a terrific pro career.
