Mel Kiper 1.0 has Gary going 2nd overall

Kiper has Gary as the 2nd pick in the draft for what it is worth.

Five D linemen to start the draft. For as many years as he has done this, he is underestimating teams willingness to reach for QBs that have no business being drafted that high.

I'm convinced Kiper is simply an inside joke ESPN tries to push on the general public.  Last year he was all about the greatness that was Josh Allen and that my Browns NEEDED to take him #1.   Josh Allen who, as of today, is dead last in QBR, leads the league in INTs and cant hit the ocean from the beach.  Now....he's turned into a nice running back so he's able to help the Bills but the dude flat out SUCKS as a QB.

Who he didnt want us to take was Baker Mayfield but thank God our GM is John Dorsey and not Kiper. I think he just does this to see who he can sucker into believing him to be honest.

QB scouting is beyond weird and head scratching. Teams and scouts and espn personality types seem to fall in love with "prototypical size" and arm strength. The three areas that seem most important to me are accuracy, how a QB reads a defense to get through their progressions, and how they are against pressure/blitzes.

I'm probably setting myself up here but when was the last time a big, strong armed but inaccurate QB in college panned out as a franchise guy in the NFL?

I actually wonder if this is part of the problem with some teams - they don't get terribly technical with QB evaluation. I mean, I've never worked for an NFL franchise, so I could be off base here, but it seems like this is a position more than others where some teams latch onto all the wrong things about a quarterback and what makes them a good fit. Of course, some players simply aren't, well, good and it may not matter in such cases.

Not sure I would say Josh Allen sucks as a qb. He hasn’t started that many games yet. Give him a little time he will be very good. Many teams wanted him in the NFL don’t think they were all wrong in their evaluations. Cleveland doesn’t exactly have a great history of picking qbs either

"Cleveland doesn’t exactly have a great history of picking qbs either"

No they most certainly dont.  Which is why I think there was a bet inside ESPN to see if they could hype Allen up enough to get us to pick him.

Right now the only QB in the NFL...and .i mean the entire NFL I would trade Baker for is Mahomes.  And ESPN had him as QB#3 or 4 last year behind Allen, Darnold & Rosen.   What a joke that is.

It's all about the combine.  So what if he didn't have the stats this past year?  Neither did Ziggy Ansah or Jadaveon Clowney the years before they both went top-5.

I would hardly call Ansah's college production incredible.  He had nothing to speak of until his senior year, and his stats that year are very similar to Gary's sophomore year.

And? Gary's job as the anchor was to set the edge first and rush the passer second. It's amazing UM fans can't comprehend this. He was not a rush end in the UM system. If he played Winovich's position he would have double digit sacks.

Wow, thank you for telling me what his position is and that he wasn't a rush end. I'm so glad someone around here can comprehend, ya know, this.

If 5.5 sacks (maximum) is the expectation for the Anchor position, then I expect Gary to get drafted right around pick #74 in the 3rd round, which is exactly where Chris Wormley was drafted after producing 5.5 sacks playing the Anchor position in 2016.

To Gary's credit he was the guy on that line teams doubled most on passing downs and his pressure numbers have always been much more flattering than his sacks.

Prior to re-aggravating his shoulder this year Gary was a top-10 edge guy when it came to pressures on a per-snap basis

He's not the pass rusher Clowney is but he's still already pretty good there in addition to being a monster run defender.

1) Ansah and Clowney were both edge rushers. Gary is not.

2)

Clowney: 47 TFL, 24 sacks, 9 FF in 36 games

Gary: 23 TFL, 9.5 sacks, 1 FF in 34 games

3) I suspect at the combine Gary will test heavier and stronger, but less quick and explosive than Ansah and Clowney.

4) Ansah was over drafted.

The dude is going to put on an absolute show at the combine. Also, he may not have the sack numbers that we craved but his overall impact, while never fully healthy, is a big reason why Chase could go one on one on the other side. He is versatile and can play on the outside or inside in a 4-3. Michigan should have used him on the inside this year to mitigate our growing pains and lack of depth at that position.

He played in what, 6 or 7 games? Rashan was a good player, but never a dominate player, and it may have been because of health, but when he wasn't double teamed (against OSU) he didn't get to the QB. He could help his draft stock with a good combine, but I don't believe all the hype about 30 reps of 225lbs, and the 4.4 forty stuff. He is a very good athlete but he won't put up Myles Garret Clowney or JJ Watt numbers.

I really like Rashan, both as a player and for the way that he conducted himself.

That said, I do not see how any team would draft him #2 overall.  Yes, he is going to absolutely kill it at the combine.  And he is a physical specimen.  But, over his entire college career, his production simply hasn't been close to that of a top 5 pick.
