Exit O'Maury Samuels Comment Count

Brian December 12th, 2018 at 1:24 PM

Per Steve Lorenz, O'Maury Samuels has been booted:

Samuels got scattered carries as a backup the past couple years as Michigan had crowded backfields. Karan Higdon's departure was going to open the door for a third player to join presumed platoon members Chris Evans and Tru Wilson; Samuels's departure removes an option.

Christian Turner, Zach Charbonnet, and maybe Hassan Haskins (who played some linebacker) or Michael Barrett (who's practiced at both viper and slot receiver but was a hell of a running QB in high school) will now vie for those snaps. Turner looked slippery and tough to bring down in some cameo snaps this year; Charbonnet is flying up recruiting lists and might end up a five-star.

Angelique Chengelis just tweeted further info:

O'Maury Samuels per 15th District Court was in court today for hearing on one count domestic violence and a second count of malicious destruction of property. He has a pre-trial hearing Dec. 27th per a court spokesperson

Glad we have a firm zero tolerance policy on issues like this.

The fact that he was dismissed makes me think that they'll stick. [I have no inside knowledge and this is just a guess].

Harbaugh has a tendency to suspend when there may be smoke but no fire. Outright dismissal generally has in the past meant that the internal investigation has concluded that there's fire to go with the smoke.

One good thing about Harbaugh is that he's very consistent in his actions. He usually won't answer your questions directly,  but he acts in a very consistent way that implies a formula to his thinking.

Unless he pled guilty, I actually would hope we wait to know for sure (on the other hand he could be let back on if it turned out to be untrue). It's a fine line because I also don't think you can wait for the legal process and give second and third chances based on sentences altered by plea deals, or else you're Dantonio before you know it. But we should all remember that Jourdan Lewis was accused of domestic violence as well, and our reaction was markedly different. That also took a while to get resolved in court.

Re: Firm zero tolerance policy.  I hope that the situation and evidence is quite convincing at this time to warrant the dismissal.  I'm always a bit uneasy when decisions are made before a person has had his day in court.  2 sides to every story. Perhaps a suspension until his court date would be appropriate? But then, the scholly wouldn't open up in time.

I certainly don't condone DV but we have absolutely no facts available to us at this time. I didn't see such an unwavering position from the blog when JD was (possibly falsely) accused 2 years ago.  Does it matter if you are All-BIG vs. 4th on the depth chart?

**** Sorry Kevin, didn't see your post below what I responded to.  I think we are saying about the same thing.

Welp.

It looked like he was pretty far back in the queue prior to this. Wilson and Turner were both ahead of him, and Evans obviously is at the top of the list for next year with Charbonnet carrying ultra-high expectations into fall camp.

This is mostly sad for him, since if he were staying out of trouble he'd be a good transfer candidate, and now he'll have a hard time finding a landing spot. But if you can't control yourself, consequences follow.

Hope the victim is okay and O'Maury is learning from this.

While Samuels' talent was scintillating, it did not appear he was going to be a major contributor to the football team.  Evans, Wilson, Turner looks like a very strong rotation next year, and that's without ZC or other potential contributors.
