Why (mgoblog) loves college football?

There's a who we are section to mgoblog somewhere that probably answers your question. Not going to link it as I couldn't find it in perusing the site itself, but it was front and center for a minute when they rolled out the new site.

My childhood.  My dad, who was a UM grad, took me to games as a kid and I was hooked. 

I think the best summation of it is in Eleven Swans.  The post itself was spawned from one particular game but it is, to me, one of the better pieces I have ever seen written about college sports, or sports in general for that matter.

The is easily searchable by name.  That will not be helpful if your question is more along the lines of literally "what got him into college sports" though.

How could you not love college football after doing the long walk from campus into the Big House?

I love it, among other things, because it's a complete disconnect for me. I am allowed to be biased, irrational, and fanatic and it's completely normal in the frame of college football.

Also, College GameDay is my favorite show on television.

It's more love/hate than love.

Brian actually talked about this on the Nick Hopwoodcast.  He was born into it apparently, his family has had season tickets since the 50s.

Because of how much more it is than just a football game. Every weekend is a homecoming. The food, the camaraderie, the band, the game -- no other sport compares.

I prefer college football to pro football.

I very much appreciate the skills and athleticism of the pro players. 

That said, there's something about the rough edges of the college game -- that is, the imperfections due to younger players, the differential in talent at various spots, and the excitement that ensues from that.  Add to that the enthusiasm of many of the players who are experiencing big-stage football for first time.  It's a more exciting game to watch.

College basketball is the same way compared to the NBA.  Some of the best basketball I've ever seen is the NCAA tournament when they're whittling down from 32 to 16 -- sometimes the opposite of flawless basketball, the but the energy and excitement is off the charts.

I think those who love college football more than say, the NFL, do so because it represents a part of their culture.  Lots of people like watching football.  It's the most popular sport in our country.  However, few have any affiliation to NFL teams other than they are from the local area or their parents were fans.  However, college football is different.  Many fans are alumni of the school, which gives them a sense of identity and pride towards their team.  So, I think there is a bit more of a personal identity associated to college football over the NFL.  Plus, it's older, has more tradition, has better rivalries, has fight songs, has larger stadiums, the players actually go to the school, there is more emotion and intensity to the games, and it tends to have more consistency with your favorite team being good than the NFL does.

I liked Michigan since I was in the 2nd grade in 1970 and was a big fan even before I went to school there in the early to mid 80s. I always dreamed about being the next Rick Leach when I played Junior High football but realized in JV football I did not have the talent. I became a Lions fan when I was 10 but years of shitty football by the Lions have me not really caring about them since the late 90s. We had a touch stretch from '08 through '13 but am happy to have Harbaugh as our coach. The football program is on its way back in spite of these minor set backs against OSU. Eventually, Harbaugh will increase the talent and build the depth to compete with OSU.

I'm not sure why I love it so much, it's probably not healthy.

A friend of mine at work once told me that Michigan fans are like a cult.

I fixed him with a hard stare and said "Only the outsiders say that!"

I'm a masochist.  Being a college football fan fits perfectly with this.

Pure escapism. 

It's an interesting game with interesting stories and interesting personalities. 

I can't control the national debt; the poor philosophies underpinning many policies in our nation, or other issues. Most of my efforts and brain power are concerned with being as good a husband and father as I can be. So it's a fun distraction that causes no harm. 

Old white AM radio could only get 760 was the only tech I had in my room, so Red Wings and UofM football; plus UofM and Lions football were the only things I could on our one TV during the weekends.

And football was the most fun to actually play.

My mother was an OSU alum and as a little kid I realized how much she hated Michigan. As a young boy who had to grow up and continue to live in Ohio, the choice was natural. GO BLUE   

I think Brian would write more college hockey content if MGOBLOG was a hobby. But I assume major college football generates more clicks. I have nothing against hockey but I wouldn't frequent the site if that was the focus.

Because you can't be having sex all the time and need a closely tintilating replacement.
