Harrison backup?
December 5th, 2018 at 3:30 PM ^
They play different positions though.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:30 PM ^
Harrison is a DE so I assume not.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:37 PM ^
I wrongly assumed tackles and ends could slide around like oline tackles to guard.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:39 PM ^
Well they played Ron Johnson at DT when he was about 230 lbs so I don't see why not.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:47 PM ^
When did Ron Johnson play? I must have missed that.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:52 PM ^
Spring game only
December 5th, 2018 at 4:15 PM ^
High school.
December 6th, 2018 at 7:30 AM ^
1966-68. Set then NCAA record with 347 rushing yards against Wisconsin. RIP, Ron Johnson.

More likely a Karlaftis backup if they saw GK moving inside in the long run.
December 5th, 2018 at 4:34 PM ^
This, I read on another forum that they wanted to offer but didn't have a slot. Apparently Karlaftis is rock solid to Purdue so they are looking to fill that slot.
December 5th, 2018 at 7:49 PM ^
I like the kids tape but??? Smith, Hinton and Ojabo are pretty damn good??? Plus they've got Morris and Newburg...not sure where a kid like this is a "need".
December 6th, 2018 at 1:27 AM ^
Smith is a DT and I've seen suggestions that Hinton is looking like he will move inside but the other three are DEs. There's a need for a big man inside. Solomon is the only guy filling that role.
December 6th, 2018 at 7:31 AM ^
Ojabo has been playing inside...I believe Michigan keeps developing him in this direction. If they grow this kid out to 6'6" 310-320 pounds or even more he will be a force to be reckoned with-as good or better than Hurst. Remember, this kid has run an 11 flat 100! And, while he projects well as a DE, to have a talent with his twitch dominating in the middle is a huge difference-maker for a DL. Any DT that demands double teaming creates so many opportunities for the larger defensive schemes. And I expect Mazi to be a similar force. Hinton is almost certainly moving inside. In 2020, with Solomon, Smith, Ojabo and Hinton inside...oh my!!! The future is very bright!
December 6th, 2018 at 8:45 AM ^
I think Mike Morris would move inside, before Ojabo does. Ojabo and Newburg seem like they'll stick outside.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:30 PM ^
Putting out very late in the game offers to off the Michigan radar recruits....is this just 'crootin? Or is something more afoot?
December 5th, 2018 at 6:48 PM ^
Ellies announced his offer on Twitter. Quinten Johnson retweeted it, adding "I sense another commitment coming #goblue"
They're from suburban Baltimore and DC, respectively.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:32 PM ^
Article on 247 says he was all but ticketed to OSU for a while and then they kinda fell of with the things they have had going on there over the last couple of months followed by the change in coach that you might have heard about. This might just be michigan throwing their name in the ring now, and seeing how things play out with the rest of the class and numbers and having someone to take if a few of the other targets don’t come to michigan.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:34 PM ^
247 lists him as their 119th overall recruit, so he may just be a take if we have room despite not being a huge need.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:37 PM ^
I think the OSU game showed a glaring need for more talented defensive tackles/ends
December 5th, 2018 at 3:47 PM ^
Or just healthy ones. We played all year without a 5 star DT who we certainly could have used. We can add talent at DT, but I think the IU and OSU games probably feel slightly different if Solomon was healthy this year.
Also, we're not going to get more talented DEs than the ones we had this year, so probably no use wishing for that. As talented DEs would be phenomenal, but even future NFL DEs have bad games rushing the passer. At some point we as fans need to accept that we played poorly that day and that is why we lost. We have a ton of blue-chip kids on the field, which is why we looked dominant all year. They played poorly and it snow-balled. Doesn't mean Gary and Chase and Co. aren't talented.
December 5th, 2018 at 4:27 PM ^
Gary and Winovich are supremely talented. But I spent much of this year pining for Taco, Wormley, Glasgow, and Hurst
December 5th, 2018 at 5:08 PM ^
You really spent "much of the year" wishing we had other players on defense when we completely destroyed most of our opponents and statistically had one of the best defenses in the country? I'd hate to get you for white elephant gift exchange.
Besides the OSU blunder and maybe ND, we kicked everyone in the dick.
December 5th, 2018 at 5:18 PM ^
I definitely missed Mo Hurst in several games.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:49 PM ^
DT is a huge need imo. Aside from Dwumfour and Solomon Michigan doesnt really have anybody else. I guess you can count Kemp but unless he does a JBB and just explodes his senior year i only see him as a backup at best.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:53 PM ^
Jeter and whoever Mattison cooks up in the laboratory.
December 5th, 2018 at 4:28 PM ^
Isn't Kemp a soph?
December 5th, 2018 at 5:11 PM ^
This was his 3rd year, not sure what his red shirt status is
December 5th, 2018 at 6:13 PM ^
Hinton and Smith coming in is nice. However, as others note, it's not a bad thing to have other options in a position where often there are large humans rolling up your knees in ways they don't bend.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:50 PM ^
Looks like a NT and strong. We can never have enough depth at DL.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:58 PM ^
He's had a string of CBs in the last month, all for PSU.
By the time he visits, Michigan should have a better idea of how much room is available.
December 5th, 2018 at 5:02 PM ^
Change in...coach? What is this you say?
December 5th, 2018 at 3:42 PM ^
Hopefully a "Larry Johnson to Maryland" bonus.
December 5th, 2018 at 3:50 PM ^
Larry Johnson is not going anywhere. We have not been that lucky lately.
December 5th, 2018 at 4:01 PM ^
Seriously?
Two days ago a top 3 modern college coach was at the helm of UofM's arch rival and today he's not. And we didn't have to frustrate him for a decade until he hits a Clemson player to run him off (the 1st "Clemsoning").
Besides, Johnson is more of a "DC area" guy than OSU guy.
December 5th, 2018 at 4:06 PM ^
Weird offer, especially when we just processed a DT in this class. He looks fine on film, not a must have IMO. I guess taking zero DTs last year leaves a hole in the roster.
December 5th, 2018 at 4:18 PM ^
Weird to want to replace Woods with 247's #8 DT? I don't believe Woods left the class because we were getting too many DL.
It's somewhat unusual that we just start recruiting a highly ranked recruit so late, but there seems to be mutual interest. Maybe that's a recent change on his part. The fallout of OSU's uncertain coaching situation and now Meyer's departure hasn't been losing 2019 commits, but in losing interest from their main targets.
December 5th, 2018 at 6:08 PM ^
Not true, we are late to the party every year with lots of kids. It’s mind baffling.
December 5th, 2018 at 6:16 PM ^
It's the timing that's weird. Why wait so late to offer a DT if you wanted 3 all along. Why offer Woods in the first place?
December 5th, 2018 at 8:52 PM ^
They were saving a spot for Karlaftis? That certainly fits the timing of the offer.
There are things we don't know about the Woods offer. Could have been conditional on having room for him. That fits with his own statement when he decommitted. Showing serious interest helps recruit Belleville and there was the chance he would show out as a senior.
As long as everyone was on the same page about the offer, I can't see any downside to it. Frankly it's hard to see them just pulling Woods' offer when that's a school they were working hard to rebuild a relationship with. I suspect his coach would have spoken up by now.
To the poster above you. Other schools send out late offers too. So did our coaches before Harbaugh.
December 5th, 2018 at 4:17 PM ^
I thought there was no more room in the 2019 class for D lineman?
December 5th, 2018 at 4:39 PM ^
Backup plan for George K. They also offered 3 star jared Harrison-hunte who’s a 3 star. Much rather have hunt tho dudes a monster
December 5th, 2018 at 5:31 PM ^
He’s a 3 star, 3 star?
December 5th, 2018 at 6:21 PM ^
With offers from osu, psu, and Miami yes
December 5th, 2018 at 6:07 PM ^
Late to the party again.
