It won’t. These are 2020 kids simply re-opening their recruitment. They’re over a year away from being locked in. Meyer leaving, so they SHOULD look around a bit more. OSU isn’t eliminated from their recruitment and will still finish with a great class next year, with or without these two.

Well, I see you're point but ...

IMO, the superior "coaching" would've come by winning on the road against a more talented team by playing an unexpected game plan, but Harbaugh & C0. failed at that chance.

Thus Day was able to exploit the well known weakness of the crossing route with vastly more talented WRs than Watson had covered before; combine that with the PLAYERS on OSUs Oline out playing UofM's on the Dline, well ..uh-oh.

Sure does prove a vanilla passing game beats the heck out of a vanilla running game.

But  ......they were on the road, as favorites, even though against a more talented team with a top 3 modern era coach who gave a "win one for the gipper" speech the night before.

UofM football failed hard that day but to say they underperformed is bunk, they did the same thing they did all year and they were out performed by a clearly more motivated team.

Should Harbaugh and Pep have been less risk averse and added more variability into the O? Yes

Should Brown have had a better answer to the crossing route? Yes

Did UofM "out coach" anyone? Heck no.

But it wasn't Ryan Day's offensive genius that out coached UofM, it was the cyst in Urbzies head.

Since I am just DUmb WolveFan, enlighten me as to what makes the defense turned up to 11?  Assuming 11 corresponds to level of aggression, where would you "back off" to make it less predictable?  To that end, what is "aggressive" defense anyway?

I'll hang up and let you edumacate me.

Yes "11" = aggressive.

"press man ALL THE TIME", heard that a lot this year.

Even if you didn't want to mix zone in to try to confuse a QB in his 12th start, a Dlineman or Rush LB dropping into the crossing route passing lane might have forced a turnover at least.

Hopefully this plays out like the movie Tommy Boy. Maybe Urban was Big Tom Callahan and was such a good salesman he could "sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman in white gloves." Now that Big Tom is gone, hopefully Day is like Tommy Boy and trying to convince recruits to come to the program by telling them they can stick their head up a bull's ass.

Most likely not, but that's my hope.

A few day two observations from here in Ohio

1. The fanbase and local media are generally OK with the Day hire but a little uneasy on how quickly it occurred and the fact that OSU didnt do any type of outside search.  At lunch just now the guys on our local sports talk channel 92.3 just asked "If Day wasnt already at OSU would he have been hired this quickly" and the answer was a resounding NO.

2. They want to take Meyer at his word and believe that he wont coach again but are generally skeptical like everyone else.

3. The entire reason the Day hire was made so fast was to hold onto this recruiting class.  A LOT or worry that this might backfire and be seen as short term gain, long term pain

4. And lastly every comment by everyone I've spoken or listen to ends with the warning to Day "....and you BETTER beat Michigan."  No matter what else he does or doesnt do next year his success as an OSU coach will be measured by the results next November in Ann Arbor.

It really is their be-all-end-all.

As be-all-end-alls are concerned, I wouldn't expect any less. There's a reason why we don't call UM/Indiana "The Game."

I'm generally happy that Meyer's gone, but I'd be 100 times happier if he had gone out with an L rather than 62 stabs to our hearts.

He's not coaching again. I think he'll end up reinventing himself as an analyst after he takes some time off.

Yeah, I interpreted that to mean 'We looked for a sure-thing coach, no one was interested, so we went with what we had.'

OSU lucked out last time.  This time, no sure-fire coaches out there who aren't already tied down.  Maybe if the whole thing implodes, Meyer will be waiting in the wings for a triumphal return.

1. Was the hiring really done that fast? Some people have implied that this was basically the agreement since the beginning of the season, but they didn't want to announce it until the year was over. In that case (or even if not), administration has probably had their eye on Day and/or has been talking to him about the succession for the last several months.

2. There is a theory that you hire from within when things are going well, and you hire from without when things aren't going well. Schembechler turned into Moeller turned into Carr, because things were going well that whole time. People were displeased with the direction of the Carr program, so they looked outside to Rodriguez instead of, say, Ron English or Mike Debord. Oklahoma handed over the reins to Lincoln Riley after Bob Stoops stepped down (though that was admittedly a late transition). You probably don't want to disrupt too much in Columbus when you're coming off a 12-1 season and a conference championship.

1. Agree there was probably a side deal cut well in advance of the announcement but to the public (and that's what I'm reporting on) it was done same day.  It appears to their fan base and alumni that Meyer made the decision and they immediately turned to Day without considering any outside options that might be available to them.

2.  True but there are two elements of Day's past that really scare people down here.  One - he's never been a HC before anywhere in his life and that bothers a lot of the fanbase.  They are worried that his "on the job training" might not be enough to avoid two or three losses next year including, shudder, an UNACCEPTABLE LOSS TO TSUN of all things.  And two, he's not from Ohio and has zero OSU roots outside his past two years with the program.  This makes him the first OSU HC in football since Paul Bixler in 1946 that wasnt from Ohio!  And that too makes a bunch of people here question the hire.

But like everybody is saying - as long as he beats Michigan nobody cares about anything else.  But he better beat Michigan.

1.  Yes, there was almost definitely a side deal cut on this back in September, or shortly thereafter.  Most people with a decent ability for analysis can figure that out.  Unfortunately that excludes 98% of the OSU fanbase, most of whom think that this was a snap decision.

2.  Obviously, the fact that he is not from Ohio does not rule out him being a great coach.  It may, however, rule out that he fully "gets" the culture of the program.  Remember when RichRod tried a few times (after being criticized by the fanbase for not "getting" the rivalries, etc.) to fake it?  It came off phony and contrived.  Could be the same for Day.  Maybe not since he is likely fully integrated into the culture from his two years working for Urban.

The bigger concern if I were an OSU fan would be the lack of HC experience that you mentioned.  There is a huge difference between being an OC (for an offensive guru coach) and being a HC at one of the top programs in the country.  And stepping into the shoes of one of the best coaches of all time.  History is filled with young, genius, prodigy coordinators who completely failed in their first stint as HC.  Rex Ryan, Josh McDaniels, Charlie Weis, Ben McAdoo.  The list goes on.  I have nothing against Day as a person - I don't know much about him - but here's hoping that he joins that list.
