Zach Charbonnet gets huge bump on Rivals

Submitted by evenyoubrutus on December 4th, 2018 at 4:28 PM

Charbonnet has moved up to #39 in Rivals ranking. While we don't care much for Rivals (I think?) it does mean he will end up with a very good composite ranking.

Cristobal is an ace recruiter, and kids do love the Nike connection there. Cristobal is under 50, won a national championship at Miami, and has worked under Saban as Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. Alabama recruits itself, but Cristobal was rated the #1 recruiter in the country a couple of years. There's probably not 5 coaches out there who are more "skilled" at recruiting than he is.

I am sad.

Sad we've lost 16 of 18 to OSU.

Sad we haven't won the B1G in 15 years.

Sad we run an offense that will never win a national title.

Sad we don't recruit well enough to beat an Alabama or UGA.

Hopefully Harbaugh can make changes and get us to where I thought we would be already when he was hired.

For a Michigan fan, all those things you list are a source of frustration.  But, let me ask you two questions.

1) what can we do about it?

and 2) do you think coming on to an internet forum like MGoBlog and projecting an overly negative attitude is doing anything to help the situation?

I ask because, to me, if you're being genuine and you really do love Michigan as much as you say you do, you'd understand that these results are out of our hands, and being perpetually negative is never really doing anything to help.  Now, I understand it's easy to think that nothing we say in here is of any consequence, but if you truly believe that, then why post anything?  It's one thing to vent frustration -- we all do that from time to time.  It's also ok to be realists, and take a "wait and see" attitude.  But, it's an entirely different animal all together when nearly every word you write is some sort of negative jab at Michigan, Harbaugh, a recruit, etc.

I get that you're frustrated ... who isn't?  But, I often wonder what it is that you want.  I mean, you say "we don't recruit well enough to beat an Alabama or UGA."  Ok, but fairly recently we weren't recruiting (and developing) well enough to beat Minn. and Rutgers, let alone MSU, PSU, and Wisconsin.  Now we are.  I get that that isn't enough for you, but it's not like flipping a switch.  Everyone wants us to recruit at the highest level we can.  But saying that every recruit that isn't a high 4 or 5 star is "never going to cut it ..." is an all or nothing proposition.  We have to take SOMEONE, right?

What do you propose Michigan do?  Recruit better!! Win!  I get it, but how?  You don't ever offer anything but complaints and negativity.  We put out offers to 5 stars, but we cannot MAKE them come to Michigan.  Winning helps, but we see programs like Tennessee get 5 stars and they're not winning anything.  If you have roster needs you make out your list, send out offers, recruit your ass off and see what they decide.  That's what I don't get.  Your comments always leave me wondering where your motivation lies.

Please explain.

I wonder why people like me have to suffer because people like you continue to make excuses and defend any and everything this program does. Now, please explain what's unrealistic about expecting our $7 million dollar a year coach to beat OSU and win the B1G.

Nothing is unrealistic about it at all.  I expect Michigan to beat OSU every year.  That's why it hurts so much when we don't.  The Buddha said that all human suffering stems from our own expectations and attachments.  For me, Michigan football is my weakness.  But, I'm trying to remain positive and remember where we were just a few years ago.  Viewing the glass as half-full isn't "making excuses" it's trying to be an adult about the situation and understand that if the task of beating OSU and out recruiting Alabama and UGA is VERY HARD, that's why so few programs can do it.  Again, as I feel like I've asked many times : what are we supposed to do about it?

To me, what's unrealistic is to think that coming in here and repeatedly expressing your frustrations is doing anything to help the situation.  Michigan is making progress, but isn't there yet.  Does that mean would should fire Harbaugh and just start over?  What else can we do but keep on trying to get better?  Again, what it is that you want?

Please explain what, "people like you" are.  If you mean frustrated, well there isn't a single person in the Michigan fanbase that isn't frustrated as hell about losing to OSU and not winning the B10.  So please, tell me more about "people like you."  If you mean people who want Michigan to recruit better ...see above.  So what else?

Now, if you mean people who think that by coming into an internet forum and shitting on the program, complaining about how much the coach makes, and complaining about every recruit Michigan signs, well, I think you need to take a look around, there really are a lot of you -- although you're sure vocal enough.

What I see is a fanbase that is equally frustrated, but also see the enormity of the task the program is undertaking.  You do realize that very few teams are able to do what you're expecting Michigan to do, right?

Who needs excuses; yesterday, and for the past 7 years, OSU was a much better program than UofM, they had top 3 talent, a top 3 college coach and 12 years head start on Harbaugh only a complete idiot would "expect" him to get by them in four years.

Sure maybe you could've expected Harbaugh to "upset" OSU in the first four; 2016 was the year, not to mention this year if they actually would have been the underdog like they should've been.

And the best thing is today is a new day ...day 1 post Meyer ...now unrealistic expectations sre in order.

I have never read or seen anyone on this board say "stars don't matter".  Have you?  There are those who say stars aren't the ONLY thing that matters, and they would be right.  You, on the other hand, believe stars ARE the only thing that matters.

No one here will say they don't like getting highly-ranked recruits, but they are also realistic and understand that you can't recruit solely based on how a few people/services rank their future potential. They also understand it is unrealistic to get every highly-ranked recruit Michigan will go after.  There are a lot of great schools and football programs around the country.

But, sure, keep pushing your narrative.

The entire basis of the “stars don’t matter” argument is that IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT THE STARS SAY. So why would they not like a player getting a ratings bump when their entire opinion is that it doesn’t matter what he’s ranked?

In reality, stars DONT matter. What matters is identifying talent and players that fit your team both culturally and schematically. Sometimes the star rankings align with that, sometimes they don’t. That is why it doesnt matter. Sometimes the stars are way behind the curve with a player and a player people complain about the team taking because they’re a 3* end up being a 4* and sometimes those highly ranked guys take a nosedive in the rankings.

Where a player is ranked doesn’t mean he’s good or bad at football. It’s an arbitrary system based on the opinions of a group of people. They’re wrong quite a bit. There are more factors than just a ranking. It’s a piece of the puzzle, not the whole damn thing

Of course they matter, because they're a subjective measure of potential given by an expert (ostensibly). But, there is no certainty to the measure.  Is there correlation?  Absolutely.  But, remember, correlation is NOT causation.  If it were in this instance, EVERY 5 star recruit would become an All-American/All-Conference or award winner, and NO 3 star or below would every become so honored.  Whether you admit it or not, you know both of these statements are proven to be false every season.

Michigan does it's level best to get every 5 star recruit it can get.  But, they cannot FORCE them to come to Michigan.

I don't often get involved in the STARZ conversations, but I think I've identified your problem: you've confused cause and effect.

Players get stars because they're good (gross oversimplification, I know). They aren't good because they get stars.

We recruit players because we think they're good. We don't recruit players because they have stars.

In a perfect world with perfect information, there would be perfect alignment between those two statements and perfect reciprocity between each half of those two statements.  We do not live in a perfect world, which is why there is a continual stream of underestimated players going pro or becoming stars in college.

I'm sure I've confused you, so let me simplify: stars generally matter, but not for the reasons you think they do, and they aren't a perfect measure due to the inherent biases and errors that necessarily come with evaluating the athletic achievement/potential of teenagers.

EDIT: to simplify even more, it's like thinking that the only good stocks to buy are the ones at their all time highs. Please tell me you don't think like that.

Still pushing this boulder up the hill Maizen?

Everyone knows stars are usually a good metric in recruiting.  We wish Michigan could land every "5 star" they could, but that isn't feasible.

Do you ever get tired of beating this poor dead horse?

Frankly; you're boring us to death.
