Does Urb leaving hurt their recruiting?
Or is OSU such a well oiled machine, it won't miss a beat? Here is their current commit list

The perspective of recruits vs the perspective of partisan fans operate in two very different worlds. If Day is the next coach, I expect OSU to be competing with Alabama for the top kids-like never before-until the change is proven to be a negative one on the field. The only question will be if Day knows what to do with them. It will be interesting to see if my anticipated "bump" will kick it this year (already)...I would be leery-from a Michigan perspective.

Go ahead and be leery. I am not. He said throughout the season that he would be coaching next year. It is just another lie to add to the list for the football program. Parents are taking notice, their current class is the lowest rated of his tenure - And this news does not help things.

I don't see much effect on this year's class. Not many kids are going to decommit from a B10 champ going to the Rose Bowl... But I see a lot of variation based on what happens next year.
If Ryan Day leads them to the CFP, their recruiting probably stays at the level it is or even increases because now OSU is seen as having an elite YOUNG coach that could be there for the next 20 years.
If Day goes 8-4 next year, the whole appearance of OSU changes to recruits. It won't be seen as a one-year slip-up, but as a decline due to Urban leaving.

Let’s be fair here. This class is the lowest rated of his tenure due to the simple fact that it’s a small class. Look at their average ranking per recruit. They’re top 3 nationally again. Don’t look at a small class and assume they aren’t bringing in top talent yet again.

The football machine is well oiled in Ohio (SEC North), I wonder if the increased scrutiny and scandals will make it any more difficult for that machine to operate.

If Meyer's departure has something to do with newly emergent scandals then it could hurt them a bit. And since some kids' allegiance is built on friendships, that could hurt them here or there, too. Had OSU continued to struggle this year, that would have helped us more, in an immediate sense.
Beyond these considerations, whether it hurts them will be seen a year from now, further down the line.

Losing one of the greatest coaches in the history of college football (threw up a little in my mouth) has to give any recruit or parent pause unless they're die hard buckeyes. It's not hard to look good against OSU, Rutgers and TCU with the talent they have.

Purdue is significantly better than perennial Pac12 doormat Oregon State and perennial B1G doormat Rutgers, TCU is clearly not nearly as good as many thought when OSU beat them.
I never said I thought OSU is going to take a "major step back" I said it's possible it may cause recruits and more importantly their parents to hesitate on their decision as he is a bit of an unknown as head coach. If you don't think that's possible then your'e the one who's naive.

Based on the fact he's considered one of the brightest young coaches in all of football and he just dropped 62 points on us and coordinated the #2 offense in the country this year. OSU practically recruits itself. We've lost 16 of 18. Unless it's Luke Fickell doesn't matter who the coach is. You really need this spelled out?

Who cares? We don't need OSU to he a tire fire. We just need them to be mortal. We have an elite head coach of our own. Urban Meyer is easily one of the top 2-3 coaches of his generation at this point. The odds that Ryan Day is anywhere near that level are incredibly low.
BTW do you really think Riley would be in the playoff if he coached in the Big Ten?

Having elite abilities is not the same as having elite status. And I'd say that a coach who took a Stanford team that was the PAC 10's version of Indiana and making them into a monster powerhouse program, then taking a SF team that hadn't had a winning season in however long and winning an NFC championship is a coach who has elite abilities.

Can you really be elite without winning a championship? Elite is synonymous with the cream of the cream, the very top, the most successful...how can you be at that level when you haven't obtained the highest honor...a championship?
Sorry, I respectfully disagree with your notion. Saban, Dabo, Meyer...those are elite cfb coaches (I'm going to wash my mouth out now). Jim is right there below them in my eyes. I want more than anything for him to change my feelings about the matter.

Saban didn't win his first national championship until he was 53 btw. It's all about opportunity.

In acting and business they talk about being ready for your break. There are tons of talented people in the world and not all of them get their break. Take Bryan Cranston for instance. He was a successful actor as the dentist on Seinfeld and the dad on Malcom in the Middle. When he got the breaking bad role he became the greatest actor of his generation. He had the same skill set before he had the role.
Harbaugh has elite abilities and his turn around of programs makes him an elite coach. He needs to win some championships, but his elite status is not in doubt.
Saban was a .500 coach his first four years at MSU....

How do you define elite? The entire body of work with context, or simply winning a championship? Is Gene Chizik elite? He won a national title. Is Bo Schembechler elite? He never won a national title yet is considered one of the best coaches in NCAA history. What's the criteria for elite?

I am not disputing that but if you have an easier route to a league Championship several things fall into place including recruiting and getting to and learning how to be in the playoffs. Everyone likes to hot take it in black and white and there are so many variables.
Imagine for instance the refs don’t literally job the shit out of us in 2016. Not even the spot because I can live with that although corrupt in nature but all of the egregious calls. Harbaugh is in the playoffs and maybe more. A few more recruits after that...the narrative is different.
Gary Moeller won 3 games in 3 years at Illinois Saban was never going to be “elite” at MSU What if Dantonio had become a coach at OSU or the USC instead of swimming up stream in that shit hole
All of this BS I think will drive Harbaugh to stay as long as he can to make everyone eat their words.

I think Day is the "Safe" hire for now. They'll go with him, l;ay low, then pounce on someone else after a few years if he doesn't do well.
But I do think they and Urban are having a mutual parting and the scrutiny is probably getting even to OSU admin after so much crap.

well, yeah, but literally every sport is LITTERED with now-assistant coaches that looked like sure things as head coaches but bombed out once they got the top job. it's a different set of skills.
i'm absolutely not saying day will be terrible, just that for every lincoln riley there's a willie taggart or mark helfrich or chuck long or bob diaco or yes, charlie weis, and those are just off the top of my head.
they all bombed out (or haven't yet made a mark) for different reasons, obviously, but ryan day is nowhere near a sure thing.

I think there are major differences between Riley and Day - Urban Meyer has publicly spoken about Day and how great he thinks he is, so I'm sure he is good; but Riley was the hottest name in the coaching market when he was at East Carolina - and wasn't even 30. No one talked about Day when he was the OC at BC in 2013-2014 - Riley has constantly been talked about as an offensive genius ever since he was at ECU.
Had anyone even heard of Ryan Day before he went to OSU?

The best answer is the jury is still out whether he will be a good coach or not, there are for sure many more examples of a guy on staff failing as a head coach then there are becoming Lincoln Riley.

The only thing you can hope for is that he gives firm handshakes to some of the assistants and replaces them with significantly worse talent. Realistically only the Lions consistently hire the wrong coaches.
