Rose Bowl scenarios

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on November 25th, 2018 at 3:11 PM

Let's say for the sake of an argument the CFP rankings are what the AP Poll is currently.

  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Georgia
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Ohio State
  7. UCF
  8. Michigan

Rose Bowl if-

  • Alabama beats Georgia
  • Northwestern gets killed
  • Texas beats Oklahoma or Oklahoma narrowly beats Texas while Northwestern gets mauled and style points'd

The only other NY6 Bowl options are the Fiesta Bowl and the Peach Bowl.

We'll either be going to the granddaddy of them all, the Fiesta Bowl which we haven't been since Harbaugh was the QB or the Peach Bowl for the first time ever.

Possible opponents: Washington/Utah winner, Florida, UCF, Washington State?

Stop. This is the problem with our program. We’re okay with being given a Rose Bowl instead of earning it. Neg away losers

I know we're all mad about not winning yesterday but if you get the chance at the Rose Bowl you take it.  It's the best bowl experience and it's not even close.  If you haven't seen the sun set over a perfectly manicured field with the maize and blue playing you are missing out.  It's amazing.  Yes I'm biased but I'd love to go.

The Rose Bowl is a place like no other. The location of the stadium is down inside a valley with a mesa rim of incredible homes with tall palms... you actually drive through a neighboorhood to get down to the stadium and then park on a series of golf courses under a bunch of eucalyptus and palm trees... That is just the setup. The city of Pasadena is old school and there are some great brewpubs and places to just walk around to get your game mindset. No matter what happened in The Game, this will give you something that no CFP setting will. The Rose Bowl is better than those other settings, despite the desire to be in the NC hunt. For sure, UM would rather be playing in the field of four with a chance to step back onto the CFP landscape and to have beaten that team.

The Rose Bowl will be an incredible experience and a launch point for redemption. If you have any chance as a team to play there, enjoy it as a fan and make the trip. It is worth every dime you would use to go there. It will make the offseason so much better to kick off into 2019. And it sure AF is better than sitting in a cloudy driving rain in some Orlando or Tampa mud bowl.

The Rose Bowl is almost as good as the Natty. Almost. It is that good.

I'm sure Gene Smith being on the committee and the fact that Northwestern is likely going to be skinned like a cat will play no factors if Oklahoma does beat Texas (they lost last time they played)

Lol!!  You didn’t do jack shit except sit on your ass and post on this board!  The team got 10 victories and earned a Potential Rose Bowl Bid!  Hell 75% of the posters said this was another 4 loss season before the season started with this schedule.  So a Rose Bowl or a NY6 bowl is pretty damn good even after the disappointment of yesterday!

Seriously, a group of real-no fooling kids went out there and had shit heaped on them after losing to Notre Dame, most of this board was in psycho "we are for sure going 6-6" territory and now they are going to end the regular season in the top 10 and go to a top tier bowl. You people can fuck off. Maybe they didn't "earn" the Rose Bowl in your opinion, but the only thing most MGo posters have earned in my estimation is jack fucking shit.

I will agree that I didn't think we would be sitting at 10-2.  I am happy to be proved wrong.

Now we need Harbaugh to show up on the bowl big stage and have his team prepared with a game plan.  We can't afford another South Carolina debacle as last year.

Everyone is unhappy with what happened yesterday. No one is satisfied placing second in the division and losing to OSU.

But seeing Michigan play one more time before they go into hibernation for 9 months certainly is something I look forward to.  Rose, Fiesta, or Peach are nice consolation prizes.

Facts are facts, whether you like them or not.

We will be receiving a B1G East trophy.

OSU proudly touts having won a bunch of a division titles in a row when in fact they won co-championships in 2015 and 2016, losing the tiebreakers both years.

I’ll take a blimp shot of a maize and blue end zone painted in the Arroyo Seco as a consolation prize. I knock it off with the “this is the problem with this program, we’re ok with not earning a Rose Bowl” crap. We’re just fans, we can’t do anything about it, it’s not our program and there’s no one who wanted to win more than the coaches and players. Find a new hobby.

Michigan winning the Rose Bowl is something I haven't experienced yet personally.

We haven't even been there since the 2006 season. People bitched about it then including myself as a young fan, mad at the BCS.

I won't make that same mistake again. I'm grateful we're going to a NY6 Bowl, whichever it winds up being.

More to the point, do the people pushing this narrative think anyone involved is actively out there going "okay we can either win the title or play for a chance at a meaningless Rose Bowl game"? Like do they imagine that the team had a vote on Friday night at the hotel and decided that they didn't need to try because they might still go to the Rose Bowl? Do they think we should turn down bowl invitations and the extra practices and free swag and fun experiences for the players that come with them just because some fans have a sad even though literally NO PROGRAM HAS EVER DONE THIS?

It's just idiotic.

Mods should implement a rule whereby posters who joined after 2015 are not allowed to call us a "loser program" or say 10-2 seasons suck.

Like idk I was here when we lost to Toledo, I am pretty okay with going to Rose Bowls and being ranked in the top 10.

I'll say it....I would be happy with a Rose Bowl. If we go 11-2 with Rose Bowl win, and a share of the division title it would be very hard to complain. If that scenario happens I would rate the year 8/10. Would I be thrilled ? Not exactly. But until we recruit like OSU every year, we won't beat them more than 40% or less of the time. The good news is it looks like 2018 recruiting was an exception and Harbaugh is going to recruit damn well.

This is like an A- season

Harbaugh has been like an A- coach on the whole

In the grand scheme of things, M football is like 90% lit and 10% HOW WHY EVERY YEAR???

I'll take it for now, probably for at least another two years before I will allow myself to get antsy with effing top 10 finishes.

Most likely a top 5 finish at that if Michigan can win their NY6 bowl. Plus the recruiting class Michigan is bringing in will be the best since Harbaugh got here, if they can close on a few guys. Zach is the best running back Harbaugh has signed and he’ll replace Higdon who was a All Big Ten level running back. If they can close on one or two of the DL prospects, I like Michigan’s line next year at least as much as this years. I’m disappointed Michigan lost to OSU but I’m not ready for Harbaugh to go. Most people here would say Lloyd Carr is the third/fourth best Michigan coach ever and he didn’t beat OSU at OSU from 2000 to 2007. Winning at OSU is hard. Also beating Urban Meyer at home is hard. His home win-loss record since he started coaching is insane.

I do believe that Michigan absolutely has to beat OSU next season at home. They’ll have depth, a strong freshman class, a lot of returning starters, and they’ll be at home. I don’t think it will go over well if Michigan doesn’t beat OSU at home next year. But it’s crazy that people are so mad at Harbaugh though. People here love Lloyd, but he’s not as good of a coach as Harbaugh. Which will be evident when Harbaughs career has ended. Lloyd was very above average. Harbaugh took over after one of the worst stretches in Michigan history and has won 10 games 3 of the last 4 seasons.

Agree.  Would rather play someone else.

Washington State would be interesting (to see if Michigan could adapt) if that one happened, because the are the only team in the country with more passing yards than Ohio State (though they have the second fewest rushing yards in the nation).  WSU also has a decent defense.

UCF also has a top offense.  Washington, Utah and Florida are a little better than mid-tier offenses with pretty good defenses.
