Ohio State Postgame Presser: Jim Harbaugh Comment Count

Ethan Sears November 25th, 2018 at 12:35 AM

Things Discussed

  • Harbaugh's responsibility for the loss
  • The defense, lack of pass rush
  • Real injury updates (no, seriously)
  • The disappointment

[After THE JUMP: ,,,]

Jim, this was seen as the best opportunity since you've been here to beat Ohio State. DIdn’t happen. How much of the responsibility do you take personally?

“Well, when things go good, things go great, good. If it doesn’t, you take responsibility for it.”

Jim, nobody really saw this coming, 62 points against your defense. How do you explain the performance today, overall, by your team?

“Well, they played great. Their third quarter, especially, a lot of speed plays that got out on the perimeter on got loose. Also set them up in good field position with a couple turnovers and of course the blocked punt contributed to the score as well.”

But overall, you couldn’t have been happy with your own team’s performance, could you?

“Like I said, I take responsibility for it.”

Jim, after seeing how they gave up 51 to Maryland and bumbled around a lot of other times, it it possible you guys — your players, not you — came in overconfident?

“No.”

The progress you guys made this year — do you feel like today was a step backwards for you and your team?

“Like I said, it didn't go good. Didn’t end up good. And I would say — and we take responsibility for us.”

What can you tell us about Devin Bush’s health?

“Devin — he has a hip. I don't think it’s anything that’s gonna be long term. … He had a hip. Same with Grant Perry, had a hip pointer. David Long, looks like a hip flexor strain. Believe all three are not long term kind of injuries, but not good for today. (Zach) Gentry got a concussion. And Shea Patterson has a contusion on his knee. Knee bruise. Bone bruise.”

Coach, seemed like they came in with their usual attack plan, doing a loot of slant routes, crossing routes. Describe the preparation you had for your defense for (that)

“Well, they do a lot of things well. And they threw the ball downfield well. They threw the crossing routes, the slant routes extremely well. And ran the ball good. So, they did a great job.”

How difficult do you think it is gonna be going back to the drawing board?

“We’ll come back motivated and make darn sure it doesn't happen again.”

Jim, early, what was the offensive game plan early? Was it control the clock? Run the ball? What was your plan?

“Wanted to run our best plays. Throwing, moving the ball. Outside zone, inside power. We had basically everything. Drop back, zone read, was all in the plan. Rollouts, boots. That was our plan.”

Did you feel like your team was ready for everything Ohio State threw at you? Offensively and defensively? It seemed like they caught you off-guard

“They had several successful plays, no question about it. Especially, they got some real speed plays. Crossing routes hurt. Threw the ball downfield well. They did a nice job throwing and catching those. I thought their protection was really good. We didn’t get the pressure on the quarterback that we wanted to.”

Coach, aside from the scheme, after this loss, is there anything you see in terms of personnel — be it staff, be it in recruiting that you feel like you guys didn’t have and you need to go get?

“No, I like our players, like our coaches. They do a phenomenal job.”

Jim, prior to Shea going down, what did you think of his performance?

“I thought Shea really competed well. Played extremely well. Was really pleased, the way he played. He’s such a competitor. He was doing everything he could.”

I know you’ve seen a lot, in a lot of places. In your career, did you find this shocking?

“I thought Ohio State played really well. In all phases. Did a heck of a job. They’re a really good football team.”

Jim, last year after this game, you said the program needed to get stronger physically. You did a lot of stuff this offseason. What do you need now?

“Like I said, we’ll come back in our next game and be motivated to win our next game.”

Jim, why don't you think the pass rush was effective today?

“They did a really good job of protection.”

How would you compare this performance to the performance a couple years ago, at Ohio State? Just how you were feeling after the game

“Same. Just motivated to come back and make darn sure it doesn't happen again. Win our next game. That’s our motivation.”

You’re a pretty good historian of this series. Did you know coming in that they had never scored more than 50 in a game in this series?

“I believe I did, yes. And congratulations to them. They played really well.”

What’s your message to your team tonight?

“Same thing as I just told you.”

Going 8-0 in our first eight games isn't "backing in."  And I'd much rather be playing in Indy than not.

But also - an OSU team with nothing to play for probably doesn't give the effort it did yesterday.  Instead, OSU went into yesterday's game with a clear shot at the B1G title and an outside shot at the playoff - and was playing at home.

The idea that we would WANT them to have that opportunity is insane.

This wasn't a system wide failure.  We scored 39 points so I don't want to hear about the lack of offense.  And that 39 was with some huge drops.  This loss is squarely on the shoulders of the lack of pass rush.  Get to Haskins and his QBR goes right in the toilet.  We couldn't touch him and he hit his 5 star athletes in stride all game long.

Don't just look at points. Look at how they came, or didn't. We lit up OSU throwing to our WRs, yet we ran into a stacked box over and over or threw to butter fingered TEs.

We could have put up 60 on that OSU defense and we still might have won that game. The big takeaways here are

(1) Brown needs to adapt or leave

(2) The Offense needs to be able to score points in a hurry in order to win games.

Michigan has no two-minute offense and it's totally ridiculous.

Your last point is very good.  Michigan's offense is NOT nearly good enough to compete with the elite programs in college football.  Having a great defense is very important, but I don't think you can win a NC with just that anymore, like we did in 1997.  Today, all the really elite teams (OSU, Alabama, and Clemson)  have prolific offenses that can put points on the board fast.  Harbaugh's philosophy of ball control, establishing the run first may need tweaking for us to move forward.  Yesterday, I think the play calling was much too stodgy and conservative after we got behind.  OSU moved the ball mainly through the air, and we could have if we had tried more.  Michigan has good receivers and athletes who can run with the ball once they get the ball in space.  We did poorly doing that yesterday.  I know this doesn't address the defensive shortcomings.  But sometimes if your defense is struggling, the offense needs to bail them out.

7 of the 39 points were from the 10 yard line, and at least another 14 were sad TDs when OSU was just dancing around until the game was over.

While the game was still competitive, we were still trying to win a 1970's Bo and Woody Big Ten game 17-10.

We had no Plan B to win a shootout when it became clear in the 1st quarter that was what we had to do.

We did our typical thing where we fiddled around for two quarters on offense while expecting our defense to hold the points down until we "wore them down".

Since this worked for teams with pathetic offenses like Wisconsin and MSU, we assumed it would work with Ohio State.

Problem is, Ohio State wouldn't cooperate and they insisted on scoring points while we fucked around.  Next thing you know, it was too late.

He knew exactly what to do.  He just didn't do it.  Hell Brian delineated what he needed to do in his post on Friday.  They didn't exploit any of their weaknesses.   None. . .Michigan didn't go deep as much as they should have. Nico Collins could have had a career day.  Gentry had the worst game of his career.

We all knew that crossing patterns were coming and Brown didn't adjust. . .and no pressure on the quarterback.

Enough of the magnanimous bullshit.  We got our asses kicked, it shouldn't have happened.  It was an embarrassment pure and simple. . .to bunch of wife beating enabling assholes. .. .

Brown did make some adjustments in the 2H but they didn’t work. Watson is too slow to cover elite receivers. Thomas is probably hasn’t picked up the defense as well or he would have been in. Although I was calling for Thomas to get in anyway.

The biggest problem was our DL decided not to show up and we were missing Solomon.  Haskins was never close to being sacked  the few times coverage held up Haskins ran right up the middle for good gains

He’s following the #1 rule of leadership – praise publicly, critique privately. He’s owning the loss himself, instead of throwing any individual or the team as a whole under the bus. I respect him for that. Something wasn’t right yesterday. Was it overconfidence, lack of preparation, lingering effects of the team “bug” from a couple of weeks ago, or was Ohio State sandbagging the entire season to lay a trap? It could any one or more of these things, but rest assured that The Game in Ann Arbor next year will be circled in blue and highlighted in maize on the calendar.

No, beyond the taking responsibility comment he needed to project his vision.  The program got butt slammed yet again and it would do a lot for players, fans, and recruits to hear more than he takes responsibility.  No one expects him to say that he’s planning to fire so and so or change this scheme, etc. but saying something such as acknowledging the magnitude of the loss and then outlining how he and his key staff would get back to work improving upon what works and changing what doesn’t to make this the best damn football program in the country would have gone a long way.  While JH is the consummate competitor, he’s also a qb, who by definition has to shrug off the last play and move on.  It doesn’t necessarily translate into the best coach.

Seemed like dang near everyone on here last year was convinced 1. Harbaugh lost his fire. 2. Our soft fan base.was giving him a free pass for mediocrity thereby contributing to his loss of fire.

So should I congratulate all the whiners after yesterday's game for the 10-2 record, the coaching staff overhaul, and the improvement? Or blame Harbaugh and the fans for being too accepting of losing to OSU? Or Both?

Need to get this right and get off on the right foot. Because without the immense pressure of the "unacceptable" crowd on message boards, it's clear we have a Coach with no direction or ambition for the program.

Take a minute and cool down.

In the last 18 years we have only beaten OSU twice.  If you are advocating that we get rid of a coach who has won 10 games each in three out of four seasons he has been at the helm, then you are crazy.

Everyone is upset and unhappy but don't think for once your displeasure is worst than the coaches and players in that locer room.

The fan base with sense needs to stand up and cut off dangerous opinions like this one.

MaizeAndBlueWahoo

Hold up just one second.  I get that the players and coaches work their asses off and put in immense amounts of time and sweat in any given year.  And that some of them sacrifice their bodies and leave the field hurt.  And all the other things that give them every right to be crushed when this happens.

At this point, however, that doesn't give them more of a right to be displeased than the fans.  Because they may have put in a couple years of sweat equity, but the fans have been watching this shit happen literally since the freshmen on this team were shitting their diapers.

I think full perspective requires realizing that the players may have a huge depth of involvement here, but fans have an incredibly long breadth of involvement that the players lack.  Especially fans who have spent thousands, or tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, over that time, funded the players' education and lifestyle, and for their own monetary and emotional investment have gotten almost two decades of losses to Ohio State.

So no, I don't think their displeasure is worse than ours.  It comes from a different source is all.  Fans have every right at this point to be really fucking pissed off about what just happened.  I don't think FIAR ERRBODY is the right conclusion, but after this much time it does not come from a dangerous place.

I mean...

Ranked wins:

2015: Northwestern, Florida

2016: Colorado, Wisconsin, Penn State

2018: Northwestern, Penn State

Harbaugh has established Michigan firmly as the second best team in the Big Ten. He is:

3-1 against Penn State

2-1 against Wisconsin

2-2 against MSU (with one of those losses being a gigantic fluke)

Of his 13 losses, only 2 have come against teams that won't finish with 10 wins (2016 Iowa, 2017 South Carolina).

Really, he's Mason Cole not grabbing a face mask or Wilton Speight not throwing a stupid fucking interception or the officials not calling a personal foul on him for throwing a fucking piece of paper in the air or the officials not calling a garbage PI on a 3 and out that turned into a tying field goal or the officials calling a fucking PI for the same thing in OT that had Michigan kick a field goal or Curtis Samuel not lucking into a manageable 4th and 1 or JT Barrett being stopped 1 foot shorter from having Michigan almost EXACTLY where we would want them to be, which is a Big Ten champ and a win over OSU in Columbus.

November 25th, 2018 at 8:24 AM ^

I think it’s comical some people want him gone.  The two coaching changes prior almost cratered the program.  It is more likely to get worse than better with another change.

While there was improvement this year, beating teams with a final winning record, no one could say that the competition in the BIG was really that strong. There is one pretty darn good team, and a couple of decent teams and a whole lot of garbage.

So serious question: Given that there has been no improvement against the great teams, what should be our expectation?

I agree that getting rid of Coach Harbaugh will set the program back, but what is the ceiling with Harbaugh? Has the team reached it? It feels like it to me. 10 wins, beat our instate rival 50% of the time, occasionally compete for a BIG East title, while not actually pulling it off.

LeCheezus

November 25th, 2018 at 9:00 AM ^

Maybe this is the ceiling, but let’s not constantly move the goalposts- preseason everyone thought the B1G would be a top conference and we had one of the toughest schedules in the country.  Wins are wins and 10 wins 3 out of 4 years is massive improvement since 2007.  Time will tell if this is the ceiling.

WestQuad

November 25th, 2018 at 9:07 AM ^

10-3 is Harbaugh’s floor.  It’s a top 15-20 record where you beat a couple ranked teams and lose to a couple.  It’s puts you in position so that when the ball bounces right or you get that special talent you can win it all.  We lost to two teams that will be in the playoffs.  If we can win our bowl it will have been a good year.  (Not great.).

Amaznbluedoc

November 25th, 2018 at 10:02 AM ^

Yup it’s a good year if you are a John Cooper fan who as a coach had one of the highest regular win percentage of any ohio football coach (>.800) but he couldn’t beat M (2-10-4) and sucked in the bowls (3-8).  Sorry, but the rest of us want a national caliber team.  Remember that last b10 championship or were you too young to recall when M mattered?

Brian8603

November 25th, 2018 at 11:32 AM ^

Everyone wants "a national caliber team", but thems the breaks. Michigan is always going to be at a disadvantage because we don't do the bagmen thing and insist on some minimum standards of academics and behavior from our players. If you're not willing to either....

A-Name a coach who can perform better than Harbaugh under those restrictions

or

B-Advocate that those restrictions be lifted

then you're really just complaining for complaining's sake.

Ghost of Fritz…

November 25th, 2018 at 10:34 AM ^

Exactly correct.

Michigan's loss yesterday is not so different from something we see a lot more in modern CFB than in the 80s-90s (last period Michigan dominated the M-OSU series).

In today's CFB even top ten team get totally smoked every once in a while (except Alabama).

Facts:

OSU lost to Purdue this year by 29.

Penn State got crushed by Michigan 49-10 in 2016 (the year they won the Big Ten).

OSU lost to Iowa 55-24 in 2017.

OSU shut out 31-0 by Clemson in 2016.

I mean these totally baffling and unexpected blow outs have happened 3 times to OSU in the last 3 years.

Right now JH has gotten Michigan back up to the 2nd best program in the Big Ten.  But the gap to OSU is still large.

JH needs to use this blow out loss to learn how to get better.  He made positive changes last off season.  He needs to make more positive changes in this off season.

Slightly OT: MGoBlog's TOP (time of possession) fans should be thrilled by yesterday's numbers (roughly, Michigan 35, Ohio State 25). We kept our defense off the field!

November 25th, 2018 at 9:03 AM ^

I'm curious. My heart tells me they held in most plays and it wasn't called (happens in most away games), but my brain tells me the talent they have found it within themselves to actually show up. This happens sometimes with really talented teams. They tend to coast when they think they can. Which is what makes what saban does so much more impressive. How he creates a sense of "want to" in these kids year after year is so tough to do.
