Giving MGoThanks 2018

GIVING MGOTHANKS 2018

As many of us prepare to sit down with family and enjoy yet another Thanksgiving meal, I think we should take a quick look at some of the things for which, as members of this community, we should give thanks.

First and foremost, we should thank our beloved football team for making this season a very nice season indeed, come what may on Saturday. When I think back to what many of us were predicting in August, which was a range of things from mild disappointment to a competitive season to “AHHHHHH!” in some rare instances, I like to think that at least some people have been pleasantly surprised. After the loss to Notre Dame, there was a lot of doom and gloom and ugliness, and some were ready to rend their garments before the football gods and others were on the precipice of demanding change, even though their cries were unlikely to be heard. Ten wins later, there remains but one task left on the revenge tour, and I dare say that we’re excited to see if our Wolverines can achieve it, perhaps for the first time in a while. We should be thankful that we’ve been here through all that and that it has set up a situation where we are – well, most of us, I am sure – counting down until this coming Saturday.

We should also give thanks to this community for providing a place for us to celebrate and / or commiserate, not just for football, but for all of the varsity sports that people put time and effort into covering. This is one of the few Michigan sites that I am aware of that gives a comparatively generous amount of airtime to the non-revenue sports, and as a result, we truly get an opportunity to cheer on all of our athletes and appreciate the vastness of Michigan Athletics. Even if you only follow the revenue sports or a small mix of sports, you can find them all here anyway, and we should thank all the people who take the time to bring that information here, even if it is only a small niche of the blog that consumes it. It is a product of this being the more highly engaged part of the fanbase as well as the generally more adept and educated portion as well.

The next one is admittedly selfish but hopefully you will permit me to mention it – we should be thankful that there are some new mods on board, because I don’t mind saying that there was burnout on my end. I noticed some time ago that skurnie and mgowill are on board, and there might be others that I am unaware of as yet, and I would like everyone to welcome them and I would like to personally say thanks to Brian and Seth for this and I do appreciate the help. Seriously, I do. I like to think the blog does as a whole, even though I know I have – in some cases publicly – butted heads with a few folks through the years. I know the quality of the moderation will definitely improve with the better coverage, and again, we should be thankful that this long-standing call for help was answered.

Especially those of us who visit this place on an almost incessant basis, I think we need to be thankful that our families are apparently very understanding of our need to be somehow plugged into the Michigan community on a daily basis. Whether you access it on mobile or, like me, on a laptop because you hate typing on a phone since you went to the trouble all those years ago to sit through all those hours of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, your need to be here is something I am sure the paid staff appreciates the dedication even if your family doesn’t quite understand it. I will say that, in my case, my wife sees Michigan as a place where I went to school, but it’s far more than that to me, from sports to campus to professional connections to lifelong friends and many things beyond. One day, probably long after I am gone, she’ll get it, but for now, I am merely thankful that she supports it in her own way.

I won’t take up too much more of your time – some of you are travelling, or doing prep work in the kitchen, or sitting down with a drink waiting for a game or a marathon of some show. Others are probably still at work seething with jealousy that others were able to shorten their week a bit more. The larger point is that we’ll be giving thanks tomorrow, and perhaps – even if we do so silently – we should give some thanks for this place as well.

Thanks to Brian for giving me my first 100 MGoPoints so I could wax poetic (?) on occasion and re-live my past through diary posts.

And for the hockey coverage.

And for Ace.

And for the podcasts.

And thanks for our ethical head coaches in the big revenue sports, as well as all the rest of our coaches.

And for the MGo Community.

:)

I am so thankful to have discovered this blog when I did, and even though I'm not an alumnus, I couldn't conceive of a better way to share in the agony and ecstasy that is Michigan fandom.

I am indeed thankful for the blog and for all the Mgo writers, mods, and commenters.   The great content, the diaries and threads, the wit and personalities behind the screen names.

Upon joining in the fall of 2013, I did not expect to be here five years later.  There were times I considered leaving...  and I can't entirely rule it out for the future....  never comfortable without an escape hatch.

This has gotten to be, to me, the definition of a true community where people are loyal, and stay together through good times and for the not so good.  For that, and for now, I am again, thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I joined MGoBlog in June, 2008.  I am thankful that 10 years later I am still here and breathing.  I am thankful for my 17 month old daughter.  We tried for six long years and we now have our miracle, golden child.  I am thankful that we can talk about playoff aspirations this late in the season.

Go Blue!

EDIT -- sorry, I joined in October 2008, not June!  LOL

As an alumnus that hasn't had an opportunity to visit campus for many years and no longer resides in the state, I appreciate the link to my Alma Mater and camaraderie I feel with all of my fellow MGoBloggers.

Thanks all. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks so much for everyone who built, upgraded, maintained, supports and participates on this site.  It is truly a blessing to be thankful for.

There are only a few sites that I have excluded from AdBlock. MGoBlog tops that list.  Remember to use the MGoBlog Amazon link for your holiday shopping.

So thankful for the Michigan fans I've met over the years (I'm neither an alum nor a resident of the state) who by their intelligence, wit, and general good natures inspired me to love the school.  I'm thankful that one of them steered me to mgoblog, where my fandom has sunk deep roots.  I'm thankful for the writers who make this a destination site for me every day, for the fellow posters who make me laugh and cringe and who share all my game-related emotions.  I'm thankful for HTTV, which is my constant companion through the season as I study each upcoming opponent.  And today, I'm especially thankful for Jim Harbaugh and his awesome team of assassin -- I mean assistant -- coaches.  Beat the Buckeyes!

I am consistently thankful for the high-quality content that shows on these pages. I'm thankful for the insightful commentary from Seth, Brian, stephenrjking, spacecoyote and others. I'm even thankful for that old Son of a Gun MGrowOld even though he's a stubborn SOB.

I was introduced to MGoBlog by my brother-in-law and that has largely lead to my fandom moving from slightly more than casual to a full-fledged obsession (in a good way).

I know more about the game and that is largely to the credit of this blog and those that contribute to it.

Thanks everybody for making this a really fun, witty, educational place to cheer for the boys and girls in blue.

Go Blue.
