OSU Hate Week-Countdown to The Game: Hate for their stadium

Submitted by UMProud on November 20th, 2018 at 11:48 AM

The Bucknuts have home field advantage this year in Columbus.  Columbus, not surprisingly, is one of the most miserable places to live in the USA.

Bucknuts affectionately refer to their stadium as The Shoe...everyone else calls it The Toilet.  Lore has it this facility is a converted penitentiary but still...whoever designed this thing must done it as a joke and was surprised when it was actually built.

Toilet+bowl[1].jpg

There are a number of nasty stadiums in the US and one of the worst is located right here in Michigan near the banks of the Red Cedar River in East Lansing.  But even this hellhole is a palace compared to The Toilet.

When you enter this facility you're greeted with the smell of stale beer, dried urine and unwashed ass.  It's not clear if this is a stadium aroma or the thousands of bucknut fans that infest the place on Saturdays.

They do have restrooms for visitors but you need to be careful when using as the locals empty their coolers here making for some nasty splash potential.

Visitors are advised to have all shots up to date, bring sanitary wipes and don't drink the local water.

Feel free to share your OSU stadium stories, gifs or spit some generalized hatred!

While things have mellowed (somewhat) over the past 10 years or so, largely cause we havent won there since Christ was a kid, going to and from the stadium used to be quite an ugly experience.

Back in 2002 my brother, me and two guys we tailgate with were walking to the stadium wearing Michigan gear.   All of us were in our 40's or 50's and none of us were talking shit, just walking to the stadium wearing Michigan coats, hats and stuff.   We stopped at a light with a whole bunch of people also walking in (virtually all OSU honks) when the comments started and then escalated.   Again, nobody in our group said or did anything, and things kept getting uglier.

When the light changed one of the guys in our group got sucker-punched in the face by one of the drunken assholes from OSU who started yelling "Michigan sucks" over and over and laughing as our guy hit the ground.  ALL of this in full view of a Columbus policeman on a horse.  I was the biggest guy in our group and I moved towards the guy who punched my buddy and quickly got about five people between us.  My brother started tending to our friend who got hit (he was bleeding from the mouth) so the the last guy in our group goes up the cop and basically yells at him "arent you going to do anything?????" cause the cop hadnt moved an inch.

He looked at him and loudly said "You guys had it coming to you.  You shouldnt have worn those shirts" and laughed.  That was my last trip to that shit hole.

BTW - virtually ALL of my OSU friends believe that is how all teams treat opposing fans.  They refuse to believe that they wouldnt get the exact same treatment in Ann Arbor so I've offered to actually wear OSU gear at one of our games with them if they will go to a game with me to prove otherwise.

Thanks for confirming what I've always heard.  Classless pieces of crap.  Regardless of who wins the game (though we HAVE to win this game), I will never set foot in that toilet town.  Michigan has the largest stadium in the country and yet the most obnoxious fans are always from the visiting team.  I'm proud that adults, kids and elderly can attend a game at the Big House, cheer for their team and feel safe.

Eff you osu.  Pretty sad when law enforcement only enforces that trailer trash behavior.

The sightlines are ok in the lower levels. In the upper levels, it's the worst of all worlds: far-away views, grimy fans and long lines for everything (ie, sitting upper-deck at an NFL game).

If you ordered me to go to a game at one of OSU or MSU, I'd pick MSU in a heartbeat.

How can you get hatred correct in the final sentence of your post and wrong twice in the title? :) Hate is a verb. #TheMichiganDifference

They sell obstructed view seats for full price ($197). They are under the overhang, the field is blocked by support beams and due to the angle you then miss about 10-20 yards of the playing field.  Small TVs are hung from the rafters so you can watch the game. Awful. Just awful. What a ripoff.

I shared this in another thread this morning but here goes anyway...

Wanna know what it's like to be a Michigan fan in The Shoe? Lifelong Michigan fan that grew up an hour west of Columbus. When I was 10 years old, my friend and his dad (both huge OSU fans) took me to the 1987 OSU-Michigan game. Remember, I was 10. Well, sometime in the 2nd half Michigan scored. I stood up, clapped and threw out some kind of kid-sounding "woo!". The guy next to me, a 50-something OSU fan, looked at me and in his scariest voice (I was 10!) told me to "shut up and sit down!". I didn't like OSU before that moment, but I have hated them with my entire soul since that moment 31 years ago! And I have that POS stadium and their shitty fans to thank! Fuck OSU and that shithole stadium!

I love that the directions to Columbus/Ohio Stadium from 1922 to eternity will forever be static, despite the introduction of horseless carriages, the interstate highway system, autonomous vehicles, and whatever Jetsons-type contraptions we're piloting in 2078.

South 'til you smell it; East 'til you step in it.

My Fuck Ohio Memory:

  • 1978 ... a #6 rated UM took care of business 14-3 in the Shoe.  A tough UM defense throttled the Buckeyes and our OL just mauled their defense to 14 pts (this despite Leach playing injured and Huckleby out with the flu) ... a classic Bo beat-down.
  • I traveled down with a bunch of family friends in a caravan ... like six cars all with Michigan license plates and we parked in a line on a busy street.  Came back to the cars after the game to find one of the cars turned completely up-side-down ... flipped over on its hood !!!

Hate is a powerful emotion indeed.

I bought my dad (osu fan) 50 yard line seats for his 50th birthday for close to $1k to The Game back in ‘14.  Little did I know that our seats had obstructed views with huge ass columns about every 20 yards or so.  We were sitting in B deck under the overhang. Even he was disgusted. Fuck that stadium.

Going to Columbus for the first time.  I've heard all the stories.  Believe every one of them.  And yet deep in my heart I'm hoping to sit next to maybe that ONE bucknut that understands that it's a game that neither of us is playing in.  That both of us have to go to work on Monday and should just enjoy an afternoon of epic competition.

Between Ped State, Sparty, and Ohio my faith that fan bases can be moral has been severely shaken, but I'm willing to go look for the Easter Bunny in the horseshoe anyways.

BTW - My wife is not thrilled I'm going and she has made the case for driving a rental with out of state plates.

I attended the Oklahoma-OSU game last September, simply because I was in town with a friend.

At some point during the game Oklahoma scored a TD, and this fairly old guy there with his grandson stands up to cheer. An OSU fan stood up, drunkenly yelled at him, and slugged him in the face, just toppled the guy right on to some other OSU fans, and knocked him out.

I stayed with the guy and my friend rushed to get help. The guy woke up before the paramedics got there, and all three of us very clearly said the exact same thing to the police officers. The officers gathered our names/statements, and talked to other fans- none of whom were disputing that the obviously drunk OSU fan had turned and slugged an old man.

The Oklahoma gentleman had flown all that way with his grandson, and they wanted to see the game through, so no amount of "you should go get checked out" was going to get him away from the field. The police were getting ready to leave as he seemed okay and obviously didn't want any more attention than the ice bag, when my friend simply wouldn't let that happen (as a long time prosecutor in a different state, they just weren't going to walk away). So they bregrudgingly escorted the OSU fan- cussing horribly at the guy  as soon as he realized he wasn't going to watch his team "come back for the win".

We exchanged contact information with the Oklahoma gentleman, just to make sure he was okay, but also as we were both, I assure you, credible witnesses, and might be a resource depending on if he wanted to do anything after the fact. The gentleman ended up contacting us a few times, mostly to say thanks, and then that the local prosecutor had decided they didn't have enough to press charges against the guy. He said that was enough for him, and at his age he was just going to let bygones be bygones, Oklahoma did win, after all, and in his mind he had the larger knockout of the day.

A classy guy, in a classless stadium, in a classless city.

I have a similar story from a friend of mine who went to Texas and went to the Texas/OSU game back in 05 in the shoe.  He said they had food thrown at them, cussed out, pushed, you-name-it, all because they wore Longhorn gear to the game.  Mind you Texas never plays OSU so all this rage came from what exactly?

His exact words to me after the game were "what the fuck is wrong with these people" cause he'd been to games all across the Big 12 with no issue and had never seen fan behavior like that before.

Again, ask ANY OSU fan and they will tell you they are no different than anybody else.  They truly believe that all schools treat opposing teams the way they do.  It's actually funny how much they want to deny their thuggery isnt the norm.

Yes, the OP has it 180 degrees wrong, in terms of the old horseshoe shape.  But now, the south end is filled in with a (not so) newly-constructed section that encloses the entire stadium.  It used to be open.  Which was supposed to accommodate track meets, I think.

Haven't been to that stadium. Probably never will.  My only OSU fan story in 2007 sitting at Michigan Stadium next to some dude dressed like Sweater Vest with a girl who clearly was out of his league.  They were sipping off a flask. Guy next to me said she was a stripper because the logo on the flask was some Columbus strip joint.  Proceeded to throw game at her the whole time just to f with that guy because he was dressed like Tressel and was lame enough to take a stripper to the game. Pretty sure he wasn't getting any but if he did I hope he got the clap.

I purposely avoid everything about that crap state. If I have to drive south I will detour through Indiana, for the east coast I will go through Canada.  I can barely tolerate Buckeye coworkers.  If I ever went to a game there I'd probably lose my temper and get myself hurt.  Fuck them.

I have driven by their stadium two times. The first time I was lost and didn't know where I was. I was appalled at my misfortune. Promised to never do that again. The second time I was asleep and my wife was driving and actually woke me up to tell me we were driving by the stadium! Please don't hate me, I was asleep and didn't know. Why go thru Columbus you ask? The answer is the same for everyone.....Ohio is in the way. You're forced to go thru that shithole if you want to go anywhere driving. So unfair.

'88 game in Columbus we were there with our fraternity.  Night before we dared sing the Victors at a local bar.  After we left, a bouncer gathered about 10 other meatheads who followed us around a street, and quickly circled the one brother daring enough wear his Michigan hat to that bouncer's bar.  He cold cocked my friend in the face, dropping him to the floor, and another came up and kicked my friend square in the face.  Then they all smirked and looked at the rest of us, comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores half their body weight, and walked away.

Efforts to get the police involved proved fruitless.  That was the first and last time I ever visited Columbus.

I keep saying that I've been to a dozen or so games in Ohio Stadium, and never had a problem.

It would actually be a good and a meaningful thread for Michigan fans (ergo, buying tickets on the secondary market) to know the difference between good and bad seats in Ohio Stadium.  Instead of trashtalk about toilet seats.

Most of the A deck seats are quite good.  (And they are extraordinarily expensive.  Prime-location seat licenses for the Buckeyes are actually more expensive than ours.)

Some of the B deck seats are just fine; some of them are unbelievably bad.  Virtually obstructed-view seats.

C deck seats are quite high and feel quite far away from the field.  More so than the upper-deck seats in Spartan Stadium.

A smart review would have it down to Section/Row/Seat numbers, as to which seats in Ohio Stadium were acceptable.

The interior concourses in Ohio Stadium aren't bad at all.  I happen to think that their concession stands and bathroom lines are all better-working than in Michigan Stadium.  Although I have my routines in Michigan Stadium down to a science where I use a bathroom rarely, and only go to get a rare coffee on the coldest days.

I cannot recall how many times I have been in conversation with Michigan fans who are telling horror stories of trips to Columbus and Ohio Stadium... and who have never been there themselves.  They heard it from somebody, who heard it from somebody else.

It's a really great college football gameday experience.  The Michigan Marching Band has nothing like TBDBITL's "Skull Session."  It's a terrific experience, in a wonderful old barn of a basketball stadium, St. John Arena.  They have enviable space for tailgating all within walking distance of the Stadium, and they start early.  The Student Section in the south (formerly the open end) end of the 'Shoe is FILLED before the game starts.  They are into it.

The MMB has Step Show, which people now set out chairs for and such, but yes, nothing like Skull Session. Helps that OSU has such a perfectly suited bandbox of an arena right next door.

MMB stopped going to Skull Session after 2004. It's one of the more inexplicably petty parts of the MMB administration that they stopped going. I thought it was great.

But, really, for god's sake, if you're a Michigan fan, don't use TBDBITL acronym.

I was there in 2010 - wasnt bothered much but went with my rich boss who bought club level seats on the 45 yard line - all rich donors around us....I enjoyed the stadium, but oh boy would I be scared to sit around the heathens in the upper decks.
