In the past, the running backs I like either flop or get the short end of the stick at Michigan, so I'm going to try a different path:
Charbonnet will surely be terrible at Michigan.

I'm with you. I'm not getting my hopes up. I'm definitely not buying a Charbonnet Michigan jersey from China.

im excited for him next year, glad he is enrolling early, I think will share carries as the #2 to back to evans, big, fast, can make quick jump cuts in the hole and accelerate

You trying to curse this man?

Curious to who you thought got the short end of the stick?

Thomas Rawls called...

Brandon Minor (split carries with McGuffie and others for some reason) and Mike Cox (couldn't touch the field for Michigan, then found his way to the NFL despite playing for a terrible UMass team) come to mind. Ty Isaac never got playing time toward the end of the season, for some reason (though last year seemed to be due to an injury). Those are the three that jump out.

Isaac also had issues with fumbles. While last year it may not have been as bad as previous years, it still was there and happened at bad unfortunate times like against MSU. I was always a bit worried when he was carrying the ball, and I’m sure Harbaugh was too which decreased the carries he got.
November 20th, 2018 at 10:24 PM ^
Maybe, but Isaac lost 2 fumbles in his career - against Maryland in 2015 and against Michigan State in 2017.
IIRC, Higdon lost 2 last year alone, including a real game-changer against South Carolina in the bowl game on the Gamecocks' 10-yard line.
If a fumble sends you to the bench, that's okay. If you're allowed to play through it, that's okay, too. I just don't think the fumbling issue is the real difference there, because the "punishment" of benching seems to have been applied inconsistently.

Brandon Minor was an absolute stud behind one of the worst Michigan offensive lines ever.

You're usually on top of these things, do you know who all is set to enroll early?

To be fair to you, I think Rb is a really hard position to predict how well they will do consistently, and that carries over to the NFL as well.

Dude is quick with some nasty moves and a mean streak. Best RB recruit we've had in a very long time IMO.
Bright future for this man and the TEAM.

Please make sure young Mr. Charbonnet has a nice new, working pen come signing day, and the right paperwork in front of him. We will cover any charges to Fax/PDF his signature in.
Let's keep this man Maize n Blue, and get him on campus asap!

Love him as a prospect. He’s one of those rare backs that is abnormally agile for his size. I hesitate to put him in this category and I’m not saying he’s going to end up performing to this level but he’s got the measurables of a Todd Gurley type back.

Wow! Not tackled once!
..
November 20th, 2018 at 1:17 PM ^
That’s how you stay healthy as a RB.

I've been waiting for his cumulative senior highlights for a while and, boy, this did not disappoint

Can't wait to see how he looks after a winter conditioning program. Might look like Khaleke Hudson or a taller Higdon after one.
Not going to try and pass myself as some evaluator of talent, but if there was one thing that seemed like he could improve on from my untrained eye, is forcefully planting his cut foot at times to change directions. The shoulder shimmy on moves will only get him so far...although he does have very nice feet which you can obviously see on the jump cuts. Sky is the limit for this kid.
I am looking forward to him wearing the winged helmet next season. Looks like another talent and comes across as a really nice kid.

His is the only RB high school tape that I really liked since Toussaint, and I like Zach's even better.
- Deveon Smith had good film, but I could tell that he wasn't a game breaker speed-wise.
- Derrick Green's tape wasn't good. He was just a big dude who could run kind of fast.
- Ty Isaak had decent tape, but he played terrible competition and was hardly touched.
- O'Maury Samuels' tape was really good, but again, he's playing against a bunch of nobodies.
- Kareem Walkers was good, but it didn't stand out like a 5-star/high 4-star should.
Jarbrill's film would have qualified as tape I really liked, but obviously he wasn't recruited as a RB.

I think the NFL proves, on a continual basis, that RB is an extremely high-variance position. You have a couple obvious talents, like Adrian Peterson or Saquon Barkley. For everyone else, it's a matter of OL, scheme, coaching, and luck.
So the obvious answer is to stockpile RBs with whatever criteria you value most, get them all practice and game reps, and let a Dude emerge.
Harbaugh definitely takes this approach.
RichRod took this approach, IIRC.
Hoke seemed like a "this guy was highly rated so I must start him in spite of all contradictory evidence" kind of guy.
November 20th, 2018 at 1:19 PM ^
Agree with Kenny. Kevin Grady was the same and most of these guys were probably a little older than the average high school kid and it caught up to them in college.
November 20th, 2018 at 1:54 PM ^
Ty Isaak and Jarbrill... Come on now, you're better than that.
November 20th, 2018 at 1:07 PM ^
Tough to get much more excited for an RB. Great acceleration at that size. Plus jukes. Love the attitude that he runs with. Eats up contact, when they can hit him. Got some All Day in him.
I think he's underrated in the class, especially considering the elite competition he's punishing out there.
November 20th, 2018 at 1:24 PM ^
He’s like Tyrone Wheatley but faster and Timmy B with better vision. I like him.

Maybe as fast, but not faster than Wheatley. Speed and power? Wheatley is the best combination of speed and power Michigan has had in 40 years. If I am not mistaken Wheatley was a state champ in track. All that said, this is the most optimistic I have been with a RB recruit since Wheatley. The one thing I see in his game is a tenacity. Reminds me of Adrian Peterson.

I hope someday Zach and his wife have a daughter and name her Sauvignon Blanc.
