End of Half Non-Call for Kicked Football Explained to Harbaugh

Submitted by Maizinator on November 18th, 2018 at 1:22 PM

Saw this posted on Maize N Brew regarding the end of half football kicking non-call.

https://www.maizenbrew.com/football/2018/11/17/18100680/watch-jim-harbaugh-shares-why-refs-didnt-flag-iu-for-kicking-football-out-of-refs-hand

Harbaugh stated this is what he was told...

“I asked them ‘did they kick the ball?’, and the response from the umpire was ‘he didn’t mean to’. So I further asked, you know, ‘that doesn’t seem like a judgment call’, the ball was either kicked by one of their players or not in my opinion,” Harbaugh said.

For the integrity of the game, these refs need to start getting some serious discipline for this kind of B.S.

It was obvious as hell. Any halfway competent referee would have either thrown a flag or stopped the clock until the ball could be placed ready for play. That crew is so crooked.

intent shouldn't matter.

i didn't intend to kick the ball twenty yards the other direction while you were trying to set the ball.  ooops.  doesn't cut it.

EDIT: also, the coaches poll is out and we're still #4.  OSU dropped 2 spots to #10, WVU dropped 5 spots to #12, and syracuse only dropped 7 to #19 after getting demolished by NfD.

I think the real question is why is Pitt ranked at all. Yes, they only have one "ACC" loss, but that's because they didn't play Clemson. They were also spectacularly blown out by PSU and to a lesser extent by UCF. Wisconsin would simply trounce Pitt and is far more deserving of a ranking than Pitt (they also played their only common opponent (PSU) much more closely.

I'm more concerned about the poor time management of the coaching staff on this one. Should have never been a situation where that ball is in position to be kicked by the Indiana player there.

Because they are trolls trying to just fuck with you and get a rise from you because they are that type of dumb fuck person. It also could be they are just that stupid like most sports fans who don't know anything. They just throw comments out there to have a voice. They hear or see one person make a comment and then echo it the first chance they get. They don't understand logic, right or wrong and common sense issues. Every where you look...idiots running about.

Personally I think the complaints are WAY overblown. They marched down field in the blink of an eye, and I think part of the run calls was to burn the clock so that IU had no chance of getting the ball back.  The plan to get the first down and have a play ready right away was a smart coaching move. The actual play call, not having routes go to the end zone...fine, criticize that. But they were in position to at least get 3 there regardless of that tackle, and the refs fucked it up.

I hate to say this. Harbaugh being measured with public condemnation about these officiating blunders  may be leading to fewer penalties.  He stated in an earlier post game interview that Warde asked him to let him handle the officiating issues. Seems like the calls have been relatively balanced since early in season.  But yes, kicking the ball and no penalty especially at a critical time.....woof

I'm a dumb explanation, but the situation wasn't helped by poor clock management at the end of the half.  I don't know why teams don't spike the ball more often; you aren't going to run out of downs with 40 seconds left, and have a TO in your pocket for situations like that is way more useful.

But whatever, it was still an 11-point win on a weekend where a bunch of other teams played worse.

I'm sure Indiana's defensive back didn't mean to coldcock Berkley Edwards with the crown of his helmet, either.

Sarcasm aside, here's wishing the best to young Mr. Edwards, and hoping that wasn't the last time he's in a Michigan uniform.

I disagree.  That player took an extra hop-step on his right foot with his left foot extended way out toward the ball.  All that while staring directly at the ball.  Look at the overhead view.  There is no question that it was intentional.  Just as intentional as the Indiana head-hunter trying to knock someone's head off.  The ref should be suspended for even trying to explain his fuck up like that.  What a joke.

The way Indiana's head coach was jumping up and down with joy as his team was running into the tunnel at halftime was eerily similar to when I got my niece tickets to some boy band show last Christmas. Except she was 12 years old at the time, and he is a grown man.

The end of the article states "Expect the Big Ten to clarify early next week whether the crew botched this call or not."

Ummmm, there's no need to clarify anything. It is irrefutable he kicked the ball. Intent has nothing to do with it. As several have already stated, many penalties are flagged even when it wasn't the intent of the player. This was clearly a delay of game penalty on the defense which any competent crew would flag, allowing us one more offensive snap. Anything the conference says other than "yup, they botched the call" would just be a feeble attempt to cover for a bad officiating crew.

That being said, spike the damned ball ASAP after Mason runs for the first down. The minimum Michigan should have walked away from that drive with is another Moody FG.

It looked pretty damn intentional.  Probably nothing will come of it, but don't insult people's intelligence with that crap.

And regardless of intent, the officials goofed and our clock management could have been better.

Total bull shit. The defender clearly did it on purpose. That cost us at least three points. If that kind of shit happens in Cbus, it could be highly costly. I fully expect horrendous refereeing on Saturday.

This just continues the pattern of terrible in game explanations of calls by refs since Harbaugh has been here. Can the incompetence get any worse from some of these refs?

I've been wondering, what does the rulebook say?  All I can find is one of the points for Illegal Day is "Action clearly designed to delay the officials from making the ball ready for play (A.R. 3-4-2-II)."

That's pretty fuzzy, but I'd say 'designed' is equivalent to intent.

Indiana needs to take a long look in the mirror. What is it with Indiana teams and the hatred for us?  Purdue’s crap show now this whole game. Talked to a buddy who was at the game he said it was worse than what was shown on tv. I’ll be shocked if the BIG steps in. The BIG staff are just as mediocre as the officials.

It's not rocket science. Whether it was intentional or not, if the ref was having a hard time getting the ball to spot it --- BLOW THE DAMN WHISTLE and stop the clock....SO YOU CAN GET THE BALL....TO SPOT IT!!!
