I think the main reason he might not return is that he would be afraid his stock won't go up that much more since he's never going to necessarily look like a prototypical 1st rd draft pick. Not saying he won't translate to the NFL but I think there is some question whether he's a better NCAA qb than he would be an NFL qb.

Totally agree. Love the kid, but just don't see him playing on Sundays. Thorson imho, may be the only qb starter in the B1G to play any meaningful downs in the NFL. That is until Dylan gets going.

Have to disagree...some of his throws are what you expect from NFL QB's, particularly some of the back shoulder throws in the end zone.
Shea is very accurate and his ball placement has a lot to do with the lack of drops from receivers.

Chase's eligibility is gone. He cannot return to the team unless he takes a grad assistant position. I think he's headed to the NFL.

If he has a monster game against OSU and does well in the post season, his stock will be pretty high. I wouldn't fault him for leaving if he chooses.
I think that he could polish up nicely if he came back for another season and be lethal for Michigan next year. I'll never count out Don Brown but I think the offense might have to be a little more explosive based on who the defense is losing.
Michigan has a great QB room and the best QB coach in the land, they are in a good position either way.

I'm sold on McCaffrey but not yet on Milton. Milton looks the part, but we should have learned by now is that isn't what we want, guys like JOK, Morris, etc... who just athletes playing QB. Patterson should remind us of this . The jury is out on Milton .

Eh. People here keep claiming "the backup QB is important." But I've only seen one year where the backup helped his team win anything meaningful. That's uh. . . not good odds.
When will people admit that there's a 99% chance your goals die the second your QB1 goes out for the season ?
No one cares how good the backup is. If QB1 gone, so is your season.

Don't know. Don't care right now. What I do care about is that Michigan easily takes care of Indiana with no injuries and that the starters are pulled early. I then care about Michigan going into ColumbASS and taking apart the Buckeyes in such a manner that it will be a game for the ages to remember.

Didn't he say when he committed last year that he only intended to stay one year? If this rumor is true, it shouldn't be a surprise that he's leaving.
McCaffery seems more than capable of leading this team next year.

I thought I recalled hearing that single-season comment as well, was it in the exchanges he had with Winovich re Chase returning for one more season.

I don’t know if he said that personally but those around him have certainly made it known that was their intention. It seems has really enjoyed his season under Harbaugh, and it seems like there’s more of a chance that he comes back to develop further. If Justin Herbert stays this could be a really weak QB draft, where Patterson with a nice finish could fly up draft boards. That may tip the scales to leaving, especially because the 2020 draft could be loaded with top end guys like Tua, Fromm, and Herbert.

His leaving is probably more predicated on future results (OSU/ big ten championship/playoffs/bowl) than anything imo. If he gets a high grade after submitting his name it may be in his best interests to leave. Would love to see him back but I have full faith in Michigan's other qb options.

The word is that he never planned on staying for more than this season.
Now, before a game was played I said that he was the most talented QB we'd have had here under Harbaugh but he also wasn't an NFL QB. Just my opinion at thw time and I have to say that I still feel that way. I watch him play and that's exactly what he is in my eyes.
I feel good about DMC so either decision is fine from a selfish fan perspective. From a perspective of what's best for him, I'd say that he should absolutely return. Again, he's not NFL ready, IMO. His arm could get a bit stronger, he could get more comfortable in the pocket, get more comfortable reading a defense and improve his decision making.
He barely outruns CFB LBs so his proclivity to scramble isn't going to be a positive in The NFL, let alone his habit of turning blindly to the right and trying to stretch wide all the time. He could out-run HS kids doing that but he's slower than many (most?) NFL rush ends and LBs. He needs to work on the "stereotypical/prototypical" league QB stuff.
But whatever he does he does. Again, I have only heard one rumor that he's thinking about staying and a ton that he made it clear to the staff that he was 1 and done before he transferred.

Speculation doesn't matter. What matters is how well he plays in the next 5 - and I think he'll play well enough. If he comes back, the offense will be lethal next year. If he doesn't, the offense will be a slightly different version of lethal behind McCaffrey next year. Either way, we're good, so stop with this already...

I'm sure that his plan before the year was to be a one-and-done, but I would guess 3rd round is a real decision for him. 2nd or better he's definitely gone. Problem is, I'd guess he gets 4th or 5th round grade as of today. Lacks prototypical size and is still a tad slow in his progressions.
He's a great college QB who would need most of his first contract to develop right now.

Haskins if he goes, Herbert, Finley, Drew Lock, Stidham, Grier, people talk about Thorson, the Jones kid from Duke, Rypien from Boise. Those guys will all get drafted, and I'd guess almost all would go before Shea. What will determine Shea's decision (probably) is where the big drop off occurs. I think only Herbert and Haskins, and maybe Finley will be 1st rounders. How far do the other guys that are above Shea fall? Are Lock and Stidham and Grier going to fall to the 3rd round and that becomes Shea's ceiling?
Shea would be in the conversation with Tyree Jackson (Muskegon's own) from Buffalo and Easton Stick from NDSU right now as tweener guys who are certainly draftable but who are probably not NFL ready tomorrow.

Herbert is staying to play with his brother.
Stidham has regressed and will most likely not go before Shea.
Rypien will need a strong combine and is probably 50/50 to go ahead of Shea.
Tyree Jackson is a turnover machine and has a very small chance of getting drafted before the 5th round.
It's basically Haskins, Grier, Lock, and Finley ahead of him at this point. He can definitely be a 2nd or 3rd round pick, especially if he finishes strong.

There might be more sources, but if not this is really bad reporting IMO.
This article references the article about Haskins going pro, where he offhandedly mentions Shea going pro. In that article he doesn’t say that’s based on any recent rumors/info, just that he is expected to. Like everyone thought all season until a couple weeks ago when insiders started hearing differently.
idk if he’ll go or not, but he probably should. He has the top QBR of any qb eligible for the draft.
