Dwayne Haskins, do tell

Submitted by Hail Harbo on November 16th, 2018 at 7:59 PM

On the 11W site the question was posed, does Dwayne Haskins have a tell?  The OP seems to think so as do many contributors.  I have to say, looking back at some other highlights it would appear so.  In fact he has two complimentary tells, he literally tells the defense whether he'll be passing or handing off for a run.

After watching video provided by the OP and other videos on YT, I'm inclined to agree.  Of course it won't help on an RPO, since that play starts as a run play, but his passing tell is near 100%.  It will be interesting to see if that has been corrected for their game with Maryland.  On the other hand, habits are hard to break, this is especially true when under pressure.

I haven't clicked through yet, but can you give me a hint? Does he hold up an Oreo next to his ear and twist it apart before pass plays or something?

Not just any Oreo, chocolate creme filled Oreos.  Wouldn't want it to be a total give away.

Anyway, my apologies, one should never assume too much on the part of the reader.  I think that's a movie quote, but I digress.  Haskins nearly always leans back when receiving the snap if it is a pass play and leans forward when receiving the snap on run and RPO plays.

Maybe they’ve done it all year just to set up Michigan. He’ll lean forward before the snap, our LBs will crash downhill and he’ll pull the ball and throw a TD in the 4th quarter. Yes, I still have BPONE when it comes to this game.

Is this some elaborate, intentional slow-play geared towards Michigan believing this tell then taking the bait?  Or is it like when that one 12 year old who just learned a curve ball digs in his mitt, only to throw the fastball?

Yeah...that's where my head is in regards to Ohio State.

This is a stretch.  Maybe OSU just sucks at run blocking?  Plus, no risk of a Haskins pull as the guy looks like a beached whale.  I mean he looks fat and slow compared to last year.

Agree. There is no way Don Brown is telling his guys to watch whether Haskins leans while the ball is being snapped.  All the reads/keys they've been getting the players to instinctively act on aren't going to be screwed with during the most important game of their careers. You dance with who brung ya.

As OP replied, if he's been doing this since the game last year, you can rest assured that the analysts assigned to OSU had it spotted weeks ago.  And if its that ingrained, he's not going to fix it in a week - the lizard brain kicks in.  If it can be noticed in time on the field, the DL can pin back their ears and destroy everything regardless of play call.

Might be a bit of a tell, but I don't think it's as easy to see on the field as it is from the sideline.  Remember, the players have OL/WR keys to focus on as well as having to see through those OL/WRs to see the QB.  It's a little like RB alignment relative to the QB being a tell, obvious from the sideline but much harder to judge on the field if he's a bit behind or a bit in front of the QB prior to the snap.

Was Barrett any different?  In order to get to the handoff point on those runs the QB has to go forward after the snap, so he's naturally going to lean forward.  I think this is just OSU fans reaching for an easy fix to a potentially crippling problem: their O-line is mediocre.

Haskins has also tried something like QB Oh Noes (play action where he takes a step forward to fake QB power, then drops back), but I don't remember it working out that well.

This along with the narrative about Urban's health and looking weak are just part of a ploy to lure Michigan into a trap next weekend. Don't take the bait!

If we see a "ton" of Tate Martell it is because Haskins is hurt.  He has barely played and I can't see him having any success against this defense.  I can see some good plays here and there mixed in with with several big mistakes.  It would warm my heart to see Martell in there for a significant portion of this game.

No idea, but I legit no joke just played Counter Strike with this OSU fan, and he said they were gonna whoop our asses. Seeing as how Counter Strike is the cutting edge of football information, I'm scared now.

Don't worry I totally gave him the business by the way
