Visitors for Indiana game

Submitted by Magnus on November 14th, 2018 at 11:49 AM

Michigan has another pretty good group of visitors headed to town for this weekend's game. I'm sure this list is incomplete, because a lot of local visitors in particular don't announce their plans this early in the week. But Michigan is getting visits from Zach Charbonnet, Eric Gray, Jalen Perry, and many others.

Here's the link (LINK).

That kind of thought will always remind me of Devin Asiasi. He was part of that Indiana game from a couple of years ago that ended in a snow-covered field with guys doing snow angels. After the game, he had a tweet about how he "Just fell in love with snow". And I was so happy that a California kid learned to appreciate the climate and how we'd be able to place that directly in front of any recruit who was afraid of the weather.

And then he transferred back to California.

Word out of UCLA is basically he was always a California kid and didn't really want to leave, he wanted to play tight end though and USC wouldn't take him so he chose the best deal available for that as he was too much of a USC fanboy to bring himself to choose UCLA.  No-one was surprised he transferred back home, he came to Michigan, gave it a shot, and got homesick.  It happens.

Guys, I didn't say Asiasi transferred because of the weather. It was just a story. His transfer killed my brilliant recruiting idea of using his tweet as a fun example of how a southern kid would be happy to play in the cold. That's all. Sorry if that was confusing.

I mean, I remember a single tweet of his from 2016. You don't think I know the story of his transfer? :-)

Yea, I like him a decent amount. He moves well for someone 6'8 and 360, but I wouldn't say it's a plus for him, he's got heavy feet and his film is pretty good, but competition caveats apply. Pancakes a lot of dudes 100-150 pounds lighter than him, has a USC offer, but Tim Drevno caveat. I think he has a ton of potential, but I think he's a flyer of someone they'll take in February if worst case scenarios happen.

I realize Drevno failed to reproduce his previous offensive line success at Michigan but I don't think talent identification was ever a problem with him.  M has hit on almost every lineman they signed with Drevno and even some of the guys they missed on are starting elsewhere (like Devery Hamilton and Isaiah Wilson).  I don't think a Drevno caveat is needed for recruiting purposes.

You know what, the kid moves remarkably well. Competition caveat...oh my! Ben Davis is a big-time football program in Indy/Indiana...they play the best schedule in the state...have won many state championships....it's the school Evans is from. Warren Central, Ben Davis and Carmel are the perennial powers-we lived there for 15 years :) I was curious when I saw where he was from...skeptical of his size...very pleasantly surprised when I saw his film. If I had not known I would have guessed he was rated (at least) a 4****...LOTS of potential here. Harbaugh has worked this team and roster into a position that Michigan can take a high ceiling project such as this and keep building the future. Hell, this kid plays with good energy-make him into an All-American DT...he's 6'8" but has a solid center of gravity.

Otherwise, I believe Bailey is going to be up from Georgia-crutches and all. I'll bet he is bringing good news! Never to early to get the next outstanding QB in the room! Why else would he be coming now...Harbaugh just visited him on bye week???!!!

He does the things you would expect a massive D1 prospect to do. But he has little to no bend in his stance, and doesn't have a ton of lower body explosiveness. All of his pancakes are a result of his size, and Indiana has some nice talent, but it's still not a great state for overall talent in terms of athletic big men. He doesn't finish blocks on the line of scrimmage, and has very heavy feet and isn't able to stay on blocks as long because of it. He has strong hands, but doesn't have a great punch, and his lateral movement isn't great. He's got some natural athleticism to him, but it would take a lot of work to turn him into a high caliber OT. Sure Michigan could turn him into a really good player, but they can turn better players into even better players. I'm not saying the kid stinks or anything, there's a difference between evaluating his film and shitting on him. He just doesn't have any traits that pop out, outside of immense size

He certainly has a lot of work and development ahead of him. However, I assess him as a 6'8" 360# 17 year old with a ton of potential. I am impressed by his effort...and that goes a very long way at this point in time. If he grows into that body and gets some good coaching-the sky is the limit. A very intriguing prospect.

Dawand Jones is a big dude. Interesting offer sheet, too, with USC and FSU offers. 247 says Greg Frey is his primary recruiter at FSU even though Jones seems like the antithesis of a Frey Tackle.

Is UM looking at him as a fall-back in case other OL recruits go elsewhere?

Keegan likely would have committed by now to us, if he were coming...   Wiltfong has him to Georgia... he is usually right....  just seems so odd even after the success so far we've had, we still aren't favored to land our top guys at OT like Benhart and Keegan...  I mean, the team is STACKED everywhere else except safety, and have Daxton coming... Patterson likely coming back so easily we are a top 10 team next year at worst... and yet there isn't a line out the door...

I hope at least we get Danielson Ike... jeez, there really has been a G-d hatingness on our OT recruiting.  It'll end next recruiting cycle.

OL is a long game recruiting wise, and we just got an new OL coach this season. Benhart was always going to Nebraska/Wisconsin based on proximity to home. It was a key in his recruiting that his parents could drive to his games. Keegan is still up in the air, but Michigan is a step behind Georgia and Clemson still. Need to put 2-3 years like this one together and make a Playoff run before we can compete with those schools.

I probably missed something, but where do we stand with Q. Crouch? I know he re-scheduled a visit, but did he ever get back to campus? Looks like 100% of his CBs are to Clemson, so has this ship sailed?

Eric Gray is visiting?  Excellent news!  Very important to get him on campus for a game before the season ends.  Makes me feel a lot better about our chances of keeping him in the class.

I think it's important to know that Jalen Perry was supposed to be visiting South Carolina this weekend, but is now visiting us. Great sign for his recruitment
