O'Maury Samuels
Sorry if I'm missing anything here but wondering why we're not seeing him? I get that they're trying to preserve Turner's redshirt but since Samuels has already played in 5 games this year, wondering why we haven't used him in any of the recent blowouts.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:01 PM ^
I’m guessing the coaches have decided that other players deserve the carries.
November 12th, 2018 at 5:34 PM ^
Succinct.
The question in my mind is: was he on the travel squad? I would expect him to get a carry before Berkley Edwards.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:02 PM ^
I don't think there's an elaborate answer. He's a sophomore coming from poor HS competition. He's just deep on the depth chart. He'll get a chance next spring
November 12th, 2018 at 8:02 PM ^
Probably needs more work in the weight room.
Er... uh... maybe not.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:03 PM ^
I also wondered about Milton. We put him in for not much more than 3 plays correct? So, he has 2 more games he can play in. Does that include the bowl game?
November 12th, 2018 at 3:05 PM ^
Yes, this includes the bowl game. 4 games in an entire season, including playoffs/bowl game.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:50 PM ^
It potentially changes if we play more games. It is 1/3 of a season or something like that.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:58 PM ^
No Im pretty sure it does not change. It is 4 games, period. I thought the same but heard a brief segment on ESPNU Radio on Sirius a while back discussing this.
November 12th, 2018 at 7:13 PM ^
Milton has played in three games so far....Notre Dame (For like one play), Wisconsin I think, and Rutger...>Every one forgets he played, on the first drive, in the ND game
November 12th, 2018 at 9:47 PM ^
Well, MGoBlue is fooled, too. His official bio says he made his debut against Wisconsin.
https://mgoblue.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=16886
Methinks Milton didn't play against Notre Dame.
November 13th, 2018 at 8:53 AM ^
Milton did not play in the ND game.
November 13th, 2018 at 9:38 AM ^
Yup... I think he played only in the Wisconsin & Rutgers games.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:06 PM ^
It includes all possible postseason games (could be up to three of them). People stressing about Milton's red shirt (and I don't mean you specifically) need to relax. If we want/need him for more than two additional games, things are either going very very well or very very poorly.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:18 PM ^
Seriously. If he plays his 4 games, then just don't play him a 5th. This isn't Rashan Gary we're talking about. It's the 3rd string QB. We don't need him. At all. We made it through 10 games with him playing scattered snaps in just 2 of them. We have potentially 5 games left. We'll make it.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:24 PM ^
Yeah, I don't really know why people seem to be expecting Milton to be our top-secret weapon to beat Bama or something. If he plays it's probably a single snap for a trick play. Otherwise Shea goes the distance.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:48 PM ^
Pretty sure the implication is that there could be an injury to Shea at some point.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:53 PM ^
Except that people were obsessing about this before McCaffrey got hurt.
November 12th, 2018 at 5:53 PM ^
I only started getting obsessed with Milton after McCaffery got hurt.
You need 2 capable QBs in case of injury (even a minor ding) or an equipment issue. If, God forbid, shea gets injured....we need milton as the backup. Worst case scenario is Shea gets hurt and Peter's helmet pops off for a play. Do you burn Milton's redshirt over that? I suppose you could go wildcat for a play...
November 12th, 2018 at 11:41 PM ^
This happened in the first quarter of the Bama-LSU game. (Tua had to sit a play and Hurts was injured.) So Bama sent a guy in to hand off.
November 12th, 2018 at 4:09 PM ^
Pretty sure we go with Peters if there is an injury and it's not just garbage time snaps.
November 12th, 2018 at 4:29 PM ^
I agree that Milton is third string. That means he needs to be ready to go. If Patterson gets knocked out of a game for whatever reason, we're down to 2 serious options. If Peters then gets something that knocks him out for even a few plays Milton goes in. Hopefully both Peters and Milton will get significant reps against Indiana.
November 12th, 2018 at 4:32 PM ^
Peters is the backup. If we need a our backup to play actual minutes, it'll be Peters.
November 12th, 2018 at 4:48 PM ^
My only beef is this: if you’re going to try to get him experience by playing him in blowouts, let him throw the ball!! Handing the ball off and running designed QB runs are not helping him grow as a passer and could actually just get him hurt.
November 12th, 2018 at 6:15 PM ^
Yeah pretty sure Coach Harbaugh has a good grasp and plan for developing young Milton. My guess is Harbaugh thinks Milton not ready/comfortable to throw the ball. Harbaugh didn’t have any issue letting McCaffrey throw the ball.
November 12th, 2018 at 7:06 PM ^
A quarterback who’s not comfortable throwing the ball?...
November 13th, 2018 at 6:38 AM ^
He did drop back to pass against Rutgers and bailed out of the pocket to quick and was sacked. To me he looked lost on that play. He isn't ready and will not be ready for extended play this season. Peters is the backup.
If Milton is needed and his red shirt is burned, so be it. Let's hope he isn't needed because the team would be in trouble if he is playing a lot of plays.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:40 PM ^
Additionally, we could still redshirt him next year, especially if Shea comes back.
November 12th, 2018 at 4:12 PM ^
You're on to something.
Would Harbaugh play him for a few handoffs in garbage time if he was the backup for competitive situations?
Had he not entered the game, we wouldn't know. But I think his appearance in garbage time shows Peters is a solid #2. (NT Solid #2).
November 12th, 2018 at 9:15 PM ^
I mean, handing off has been working pretty well for Shea, Dylan, and Brandon. Hard to argue with that strategy.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:49 PM ^
Based on the data this season I have no issue letting Shea throw 30 times per game. In order to have balance with the rushing attack that may require a little more up tempo. If this strategy gets us more points I think that's a net positive with our defense.
November 12th, 2018 at 6:59 PM ^
As I understand it, redshirt is not limited to just the first year. LJ Scott is redshirting for this season at MSU. He is not a freshman.
November 12th, 2018 at 11:10 PM ^
I think the point was Harbaugh wanted to get Milton some snaps in a game on the road, just in case he might need him in Columbus or elsewhere afterwards.
Obviously, the red-shirt is not as important as the Ohio State game and the post-season, but I think Harbaugh would prefer to keep that option if he could, especially looking to the next few seasons ahead. I would expect to see a lot of Peters versus Indiana in relief of Patterson. If not, we'll know that Milton is definitely #2, and that the coaching staff doesn't have a lot of faith in either Milton or Peters.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:04 PM ^
We have Higdon, Evans, Tru, and Mason getting carries. He has a lot of people ahead of him and Samuels hasn't exactly impressed when he does get runs
He has elite speed but he never showcases it because he cant break through the line. I hope he can learn to find the holes better
November 12th, 2018 at 3:53 PM ^
How are you judging his ability based on like 10 carries? There's really nothing we can say about the guy at this point.
November 12th, 2018 at 4:11 PM ^
Still hasn't shown much in those carries. If he was wowing coaches in practice, he would see more touches in games.
November 12th, 2018 at 5:14 PM ^
I disagree.
I actually think Samuels looked good in his limited carries this year.
Tru is solid, but I wonder what Omaury would do with those carries.
November 12th, 2018 at 4:19 PM ^
The fact that he only has like 10 carries and we are seeing Berkley Edwards getting garbage time snaps probably speaks to what he's suggesting .
November 12th, 2018 at 8:15 PM ^
Seems like Rutger was walk-on day. They brought Sessa in a qb for a play. Wouldn't read to deeply into Edwards playing as a knock on Samuels. For all we know Samuels is dinged up.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:50 PM ^
Berkley Edwards is not good at all. Michael Sessa played against Rutgers, too. I think the Rutgers game for Edwards was basically this:
"Hey, if Berkley doesn't run the ball this week, he's never going to run the ball at Michigan. So let's go ahead and give him the ball so he can have some stories to tell along with Stan and Braylon and he won't feel so left out at Thanksgiving dinner."
November 12th, 2018 at 10:40 PM ^
For starters I was as high as anybody on Samuels when he was coming in and still think he will become a good RB so you can drop the defensive bullshit
In his limited time he hasn't shown he can provide anything this year. We have Tru, Evans, and Mason who we still need to prep for bigger games
You can tell if a player is ready or not based off of limited carries. Tru came in this year and you immediately knew he would be a contributor after only a few carries. Turner came in and you could tell he is going to be a good RB in the future. Samuels hasn't shown that yet. As I said he has the elite speed and is an athletic freak but he cant find the holes yet

Is this thread, and especially its title, an intentional troll of the thread police?
Has to be, right?
November 12th, 2018 at 3:10 PM ^
He is new so he probably has never read:
What should I title my threads? Please make your thread titles as informative as possible: "Justin Feagin" is bad. "Justin Feagin leaving the team?" is good.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:07 PM ^
If Gray ends up in the class, have to wonder if some of these current RBs don’t start looking around. Turner got some camp buzz. Haskins was “coming on” during year but maybe kinda still could be a LB? Evans and Wilson seem to have their roles for next year and after that it’s gonna be an all out battle for snaps with one or possibly two outstanding freshman backs.
Had high hopes for Samuels coming in. Hope he can emerge next spring.
November 12th, 2018 at 4:02 PM ^
Evans, Charbonnet, Gray, Tru, Bench, Samuels, Turner, Haskins...that’s quite the depth at RB.
Obviously, there will be some departures from this list; but is impressive nonetheless.
November 12th, 2018 at 6:36 PM ^
"Impressive" depth is a bit premature, no?
Consider that
- 2 on that list are HS kids (one of which is leaning TN),
- Turner with a 13 (promising) career snaps
- Samuels with 19 (not promising) career snaps
- Haskins is a 4th string LB
- Bench is not a RB.
- I don't think anyone wants to see Evans in a feature RB position.
I would argue that Charbonnet is the only RB suitable for #1 RB. thankfully he is enrolling early.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:08 PM ^
Was wondering the same thing. I wasn't able to watch this game so I headed over to the box score to see if my fellow New Mexican got in the game, then I had a sad. Really want him to be successful at Michigan!
November 12th, 2018 at 3:10 PM ^
I don't know the answer, but I do know there is a tremendous amount of talent in almost every position on this team. The fact of the matter is Omaury is probably 4 or 5th in the depth chart and snaps have been hard to come by for anyone that deep in the lineup chart. I do not believe this means O'Maury is never going to play or is looking to transfer (not that you were insuating this), but this is a potential CFP team. O'Maury will hopefully be part of the reloading rather than the rebuilding of this team in the next 3-4 years.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:16 PM ^
You should edit the title regarding playing time.
November 12th, 2018 at 3:34 PM ^
You're right---confess total ignorance, how do I do this?
