Rumor: Ed Warinner a candidate for Kansas HC

Submitted by Larry Appleton on November 8th, 2018 at 4:25 PM

I was listening to Full Ride on ESPNU radio this morning, and Rick Neuheisel talked up Ed Warinner as a top candidate for the Kansas head coach job.  I've looked a bit online just now and haven't found anything to go with this, but . . .

- Warinner is a former OC at Kansas, including for their 2007 Orange Bowl team,

- He previously interviewed for the HC job back in 2014 when he was Co-OC at OSU.

Too early for anything substantial to happen, but I thought I might as well yell fire in a crowded theater and cause a panic.

It's simple. Get out the wallet and pay him. I don't care if he makes a million dollars, he deserves it.

If TIM DREVNO made seven figures here, Warinner deserves it too. If he already does, give him a raise.

Miracle worker.

And a HC at a Power 5 program is almost always going to make more than an assistant coach, especially one that is not the OC. For me, the "get out the wallet" move only applies to competing with any program that tries to hire him as an OC.

If Kansas decides on Warinner, I think people should congratulate him and move on to the next one. Harbaugh has been pretty good in finding replacements for assistants who leave for other jobs at Stanford and Michigan. There are other OL coaches who can do the job.

Yeah... except their current coach is currently making like... half of that.

I’m also pretty sure they’re still paying their previous two coaches (and possibly still Weis as well).

I doubt a basketball school with as little success in football as Kansas has had is willing to put that kind of money into a coach at this point.

Yep. Pay the man. We don't have an OC so that, at least theoretically, gives us more wiggle room. But as WD said, it's simple.

1. Open wallet

2. Ask how much.

3. Pay the man his money.

Well I really like having Warinner here, and I'd hate to see him go.  Knowing something about how he had done at OSU, I had very high hopes when he came to Ann Arbor; hopes that have very much been met.

But this seems like a really good time to examine all of the comments on this page, along the lines of, "Get out the money cannon and pull that trigger!"

College football is getting more and more expensive.  We seem to be more or less slaves to television money, and we all know how television is ruining the in-Stadium experience.  And to even get that ever-more-compromised in-Stadium experience, we are charging more for ticket prices, and more for PSD's; meanwhile all across college football, attendance is flattening or falling off.  Every single Michigan fan of a certain age -- start with John U. Bacon -- can talk about how Michigan football used to be the best bargain in sports in the state.  And how young kids could easily go to the games and have casual fun.  And breed Michigan football fanatics.  Now, young families and interested kids are almost entirely priced out.

And when you look at Athletic Department expenses, one of the most massive expenditures (and getting bigger and bigger all the time) are coaching salaries.  People talk about all the revenue, and how players deserve to share in the revenue, and how there is this enormous gulf between coaches who are getting paid millions, versus players who are paid absolutely nothing...

But in this thread we see the fans' perceived imperatives, in paying coaches.  They want somebody, anybody, to pay what it takes to hire/retain hot coaches.

Something's gotta give.  And I haven't seen a single post in this thread yet that acknowledges that fact.

You say fact but from a financial standpoint...

15% of Michigan football revenue can cover salaries, benefits and incidentals for the entire coaching and athletic support staff.

We could also examine exactly how much of that revenue comes from the B1G from TV advertising, but you didn't really set your argument, though I do not dispute that advertising and down time needs a total revamp.

Rock Chalk Talk has a list of guys. Warriner is very low on the list, mostly because he'd bbe an uninspiring hire to the fan base and he hasnt expressed an overwhelming interest to be in Kansas. I think their top candidtae is Stitt or Stritt.

Les Miles met with KU already. It’s his job to lose. Long wants a guy with head coaching experience and I do not think Warinner has any. He may very well be a candidate, but I wouldn’t bet on him leaving Michigan to coach at Kansas, even if it is for the head coaching job.
