Rumor: Ed Warinner a candidate for Kansas HC
I was listening to Full Ride on ESPNU radio this morning, and Rick Neuheisel talked up Ed Warinner as a top candidate for the Kansas head coach job. I've looked a bit online just now and haven't found anything to go with this, but . . .
- Warinner is a former OC at Kansas, including for their 2007 Orange Bowl team,
- He previously interviewed for the HC job back in 2014 when he was Co-OC at OSU.
Too early for anything substantial to happen, but I thought I might as well yell fire in a crowded theater and cause a panic.

It's simple. Get out the wallet and pay him. I don't care if he makes a million dollars, he deserves it.
If TIM DREVNO made seven figures here, Warinner deserves it too. If he already does, give him a raise.
Miracle worker.

I don't think this would come down to money. It would be about whether or not he'd want to be a head coach.
But there's no particular reason to believe he's actually a candidate.
November 8th, 2018 at 5:11 PM ^
And a HC at a Power 5 program is almost always going to make more than an assistant coach, especially one that is not the OC. For me, the "get out the wallet" move only applies to competing with any program that tries to hire him as an OC.
If Kansas decides on Warinner, I think people should congratulate him and move on to the next one. Harbaugh has been pretty good in finding replacements for assistants who leave for other jobs at Stanford and Michigan. There are other OL coaches who can do the job.
November 8th, 2018 at 7:20 PM ^
Yeah. If he were KU's head coach he'd probably make $3-4 million a year. We're not going to pay that for an assistant coach.
November 8th, 2018 at 8:15 PM ^
Beaty's salary is only $1.6M. No way Kansas pays $3M for any head football coach.
November 8th, 2018 at 8:46 PM ^
For 3 years and then he gets canned because Kansas sucks and they will always suck. Bill Belichick couldn't turn that team around.
November 8th, 2018 at 10:49 PM ^
neither could Charlie Weis!
November 9th, 2018 at 6:38 AM ^
Charlie Weis can hardly turn himself around.
Get it? It's an inertia joke.
November 9th, 2018 at 7:51 AM ^
Haha Classic
November 9th, 2018 at 7:51 AM ^
I wish I could up-vote this.
November 9th, 2018 at 1:24 PM ^
Yeah... except their current coach is currently making like... half of that.
I’m also pretty sure they’re still paying their previous two coaches (and possibly still Weis as well).
I doubt a basketball school with as little success in football as Kansas has had is willing to put that kind of money into a coach at this point.
November 9th, 2018 at 7:11 AM ^
Whoever his assistant is needs to just mirror what he’s seen Warriner do. Don’t change a dam thing. Warriners no spring chicken and Kansas isn’t exactly an attractive job.

Fan Enos?

Then get some long named donor to fund the Offensive Line Head Coaching Position at the University of Michigan.
November 8th, 2018 at 5:58 PM ^
Jim Brandstatter?
November 8th, 2018 at 9:55 PM ^
The Jim Brandstatter- Dan Dierdorf thank God we finally have a competent O-line coach.
November 8th, 2018 at 5:23 PM ^
Whatever he is making double it. Seriously. 3 straight wins against ranked opponents, 2 of which had formidable DLines.
November 8th, 2018 at 6:42 PM ^
I don't know how many more years his son has at MSU but he has said in interviews that it's really nice for him and his wife to live so close by their son at this time.
November 8th, 2018 at 7:56 PM ^
Hope his son stays at MSU and obtains a graduate degree. Or even Ann Arbor.

When in doubt, whip it out.
The wallet I mean.
November 8th, 2018 at 6:28 PM ^
Thanks for clarifying.
November 8th, 2018 at 11:01 PM ^
Oops, I should have read further.

Louis C.K. says hi.
November 8th, 2018 at 6:42 PM ^
Yep. Pay the man. We don't have an OC so that, at least theoretically, gives us more wiggle room. But as WD said, it's simple.
1. Open wallet
2. Ask how much.
3. Pay the man his money.
November 8th, 2018 at 7:56 PM ^
Teddy KGB style ...
November 8th, 2018 at 8:08 PM ^
Well I really like having Warinner here, and I'd hate to see him go. Knowing something about how he had done at OSU, I had very high hopes when he came to Ann Arbor; hopes that have very much been met.
But this seems like a really good time to examine all of the comments on this page, along the lines of, "Get out the money cannon and pull that trigger!"
College football is getting more and more expensive. We seem to be more or less slaves to television money, and we all know how television is ruining the in-Stadium experience. And to even get that ever-more-compromised in-Stadium experience, we are charging more for ticket prices, and more for PSD's; meanwhile all across college football, attendance is flattening or falling off. Every single Michigan fan of a certain age -- start with John U. Bacon -- can talk about how Michigan football used to be the best bargain in sports in the state. And how young kids could easily go to the games and have casual fun. And breed Michigan football fanatics. Now, young families and interested kids are almost entirely priced out.
And when you look at Athletic Department expenses, one of the most massive expenditures (and getting bigger and bigger all the time) are coaching salaries. People talk about all the revenue, and how players deserve to share in the revenue, and how there is this enormous gulf between coaches who are getting paid millions, versus players who are paid absolutely nothing...
But in this thread we see the fans' perceived imperatives, in paying coaches. They want somebody, anybody, to pay what it takes to hire/retain hot coaches.
Something's gotta give. And I haven't seen a single post in this thread yet that acknowledges that fact.
November 8th, 2018 at 10:00 PM ^
You say fact but from a financial standpoint...
15% of Michigan football revenue can cover salaries, benefits and incidentals for the entire coaching and athletic support staff.
We could also examine exactly how much of that revenue comes from the B1G from TV advertising, but you didn't really set your argument, though I do not dispute that advertising and down time needs a total revamp.
November 9th, 2018 at 12:33 AM ^
Well, we could take a shot at Title IX. I'm certainly willing to give that a go.

I heard from a guy who plays Counter Strike that he will hire Don Brown as his DC.
November 9th, 2018 at 7:13 AM ^
Rock Chalk Talk has a list of guys. Warriner is very low on the list, mostly because he'd bbe an uninspiring hire to the fan base and he hasnt expressed an overwhelming interest to be in Kansas. I think their top candidtae is Stitt or Stritt.

RUMOR: Ed Warinner's agent is working to get him a pay raise.

I’m good for 20 bucks! Who’s with me!
November 8th, 2018 at 6:22 PM ^
I will toss another rumor out there. There is talk that Colorado will part ways with their head coach and they are very interested in Pep Hamilton
November 8th, 2018 at 7:15 PM ^
I would be very interested to see who Harbaugh would replace him with. Both in scheme and recruiting it seems we're running some kind of version of a power-spread, no idea who might be a good fit if Pep were to leave.
November 9th, 2018 at 7:46 AM ^
Hire David Shaw!
November 8th, 2018 at 8:21 PM ^
Pull out the wallet and Pay Colorado? (Ducks)
November 8th, 2018 at 4:28 PM ^
It isn't a rumor. It's just people who need things to talk about making things up to talk about.
Sure, I guess it could happen, but I seriously doubt it.
November 8th, 2018 at 4:36 PM ^
That’s definitely not a rumor. Good point.
November 8th, 2018 at 5:33 PM ^
Yup. Talking heads always throw names of good assistants out there for open head coach positions. If they're right, the talking head nailed it. If they're wrong then they go on to tomorrow.
November 8th, 2018 at 4:28 PM ^
Les Miles met with KU already. It’s his job to lose. Long wants a guy with head coaching experience and I do not think Warinner has any. He may very well be a candidate, but I wouldn’t bet on him leaving Michigan to coach at Kansas, even if it is for the head coaching job.
November 8th, 2018 at 4:33 PM ^
Miles is a splash hire for a Kansas program that is just a tick above being on life support. They drilled Rutger earlier this year which shows they have a pulse...I guess. Miles would at least generate some buzz will be able to get some better athletes in there.
November 8th, 2018 at 4:38 PM ^
That's going to be such a bad fucking hire LOL. Do it Kansas, you know you want to.
November 8th, 2018 at 4:57 PM ^
That is a fantastic hire...for Kansas. Nobody talks about KU football, that will change with a character like Les running the show.
