We might be #4 now but everybody needs to keep rooting for Alabama cause the Bowl Committee proved last night they REALLY want two SEC teams in the final four

Submitted by mGrowOld on November 7th, 2018 at 10:23 AM

The number one takeaway from last night's ranking reveal was that the bowl committee REALLY wants to see two SEC in the final four and is manipulating the hell out of the rankings to give themselves every chance make that happen.  By placing Georgia at #5 they now have a clear path to the final four IF they beat Alabama in the SEC title game.   And if anybody thinks a one-loss Alabama team is getting left out of the dance this year they are nuts, especially when the talking heads are currently describing them as one of the best teams in college football history and after what we saw them do last night.

When the committee only dropped Kentucky two slots after losing badly to Georgia and even more unbelievably kept a two loss LSU at #7 ahead of West Virginia, Washington State and OSU, they are setting the stage for only moving Alabama down a couple of slots should they lose to Georgia in the title game.  If that happens and both Clemson & Notre Dame win out the final four will look like this IMO (remember they only dropped Kentucky two slots after getting beat by 17 at home last week and only dropped LSU four spots after getting shut out at home)

1. Clemson

2. Georgia

3. Alabama

4. Notre Dame

We need Alabama to win out or either Clemson or Notre Dame to lose for us to be assured of getting in.  Those that say if we just win out we'll be fine are missing the elephant in the room IMO - that when a one loss Kentucky team ranked 9th lost to Georgia team ranked 6th they only dropped two slots cause it was such a "good loss".  Does anybody here really believe that if #1 ranked Alabama somehow loses to a Georgia team ranked 5th they'll drop Alabama MORE than they dropped Kentucky losing to Georgia?

Last night one of our fellow posters PapabearBlue had a perfect post IMO on what's going on and is worth a read if you missed it:

If you look at the SEC's wins/losses what is happening is a giant pile of bullshit.

The SEC has no good wins, in fact they have zero non-con wins against ranked opponents. They've all beaten each other. It's a giant circle jerk of SEC love and transitive bullshit. I'm not gonna pull up the long diatribe I typed the other day but essentially every SEC team being propped up because they beat a team who beat a team who beat them. Every one of those teams is getting good credit for their own losses.

beats 2 who beats 3 who beats 1. Well, obviously 1 must be pretty good because they beat 2 and 2 beat 3 and 3 was good enough to beat 1.

It makes no fucking sense, it's an SEC slob job. AND it's the exact reason why preseason rankings are fucking cancer.

If Georgia isn't ranked #3 preseason then NONE of this matters.

But NO, after Georgia loses to LSU everyone just assumes LSU should be number 3, after they had just lost to a 6-3 Florida who has just now lost to 4-4 Florida. Why not do the sensible thing and assume that Georgia was over-ranked as fuck like what happens to every other conference?

Oh, yeah. SEC slob jobs.

It's fucking corrupt.

I don't want to give them too much credit but you have to think that some of these rankings are designed to set up conference championships as de facto play-in games.

The B1G might be a different story but their play-in game is just played in Columbus a week earlier.

I'd hope their goal is to pick the best 4 teams at that moment, and It might shock some people but I could see a late season loss dropping Alabama to 5.

Beat Rutgers, beat Indiana, beat Ohio State, beat BIG West Champion...worry about SEC winners/losers later?  I mean the Revenge Tour still has one big date circled on the calendar.  We still have 4 games we need to win....playoffs don’t start tomorrow...and don’t start for us at all if we lose.

Thank you for the clarification. I let my fandom get the best of me, and thought I was a player for a moment.

“We” are fans of a team that has not won a game in Columbus since 2000 (it is 2018).

“We” are fans of a team that since the 100th Game in Ann Arbor, has only beaten an Ohio State team that was coached by Interim Coach Luke Fickell.

“We” are fans of a national championship caliber team that lost to an FCS team.

“You” sound like a moron, or someone with long term memory loss, when “you” talk about Michigan’s playoff projections and assume Michigan is just going to go on the road and walk into Columbus and get a W against a team coached by Urban Meyer and led by a Hesiman candidate QB.  Let the team win a few against our rival before prematurely booking your tickets to the playoffs.

Oh, I disagree strongly.

Any other scenario, sure:  Michigan is top 4 if they win out.  But a 12-1 Alabama team that just lost the SEC championship or a 12-1 Michigan team that just won the Big Ten?  The committee is going to spend a long time talking about that, and they might actually talk themselves into picking Alabama.

I would put it at about a 40 percent chance that they pick Alabama in that scenario.

Let's say:

OSU loses to MSU this Saturday.  Badly.

MSU loses to Nebraska in a hangover game the following week.

WISC beats PSU, but loses to Purdue the following week

NW loses to Iowa, but wins its next two games.

M beats a weak 7-5 NW in the B10 championship game, which is essentially a rematch and does little for M's resume.  M's best win is narrow one over a 9-3 OSU squad that got blown out by Purdue and MSU, and OSU ends up ranked in the 20's.

That's a recipe for controversy vs. a 12-1 Alabama team.  And if OSU somehow loses @MSU AND @Maryland, that could be very problematic for M.

Exactly, and we don't even need all of those things to happen to have a potential issue.  Just imagine that Georgia beats Alabama in a nail biter and that Michigan has a close call between now and the end of the B1G season.  That would be enough to force a difficult decision.  Add to that some of the people on the selection committee, and it's pretty clear which way the bias would run.

We therefore do want Alabama to win (or, alternatively, to get shellacked, which is unlikely) and our wins need to be unassailable.

I agree that could (though probably won't) happen.

Here's a question that never gets raised: why do we structure the conferences -- the SEC in particular -- so that there is always a question as to which is the best team?

We have the whole regular season, plus a conference championship game at a neutral site.  Decide your goddamn champion and move on.

Can't wait until we expand the playoff to 8 teams and Pete Finebaum goes on ESPN, "is this the year the SEC gets five teams in?"  It's bullshit, every year.

The justification for a non-Champion was already set up last year.  Alabama didn't even make the Championship Game in the SEC and still got in.  It should have been an automatic disqualification.  Now having seen that they won it all last year, the genie is out of the bottle.  Plenty of justification to get them in.

The narrative will be that the best 4 teams make the playoffs, which is subjective because Alabama didn't have the resume last year, but passed the so called "eye test".

Is this really even a question. Of course they will. I think the committee would put 3 teams from SEC in to CFP if they could.

B1G, PAC12, and Big12 should just bow out of CFP after this season and form their own playoffs (winners from each conf plus one wildcard), and let ACC and SEC have their own playoffs. Then the winners of each can meet for the national championship. The current system is WAY to slanted for ACC/SEC.

Yes, there's a bit of an SEC bias. But it's not exactly undeserved. The SEC wins a lot of titles. But the BCS definitely does NOT want 3 SEC teams in the CFP. I'm not sure it even ideally wants 2. The BCS want to appeal to the widest audience, and the B10 is a huge piece of the demographic. If anything, the BCS will lean over backward to accommodate the B10 - because it only makes practical sense.

I tend to agree with what Herbie and Rece think. McElroy on the radio today said the same exact thing. Last year’s circumstance is not like this year’s. You had 2-loss conference winners going up against 1-loss Bama. If everyone else wins and continues to win, no way the committee slides us out. We would be the hottest team in the country with the best loss of anyone(by 7 on the road against the #1 or #2 team in the country in this scenario). No need to fear being left out, because Bama would have played themselves out in that scenario.

Pretty sure we have to beat Rutgers first...

EDIT: Didn’t think I needed to add the /s in there but I see the board is a little sensitive this Wednesday.

Bottom line is: Michigan/OSU and Alabama/Georgia is round 1 of the playoffs.   If Georgia beats Alabama, I don't understand how the committee will say, "love it lets plays that same game again!"

IMO: Michigan just needs to focus on winning the next 3 games and a win in Indy.   Let the other shit play out the way its going to.

Keep in mind, Michigan in playoffs equals ratings gold, which can lead to higher rights fees and more $$$ in NCAA execs' pockets.

Don't trust anyone running the show, but I think it's very possible Alabama gets left out if it loses SEC title game. The NCAA knows everyone is sick of Ala/Clem and anxious to get some new teams in there, not to mention new regions of the country.

I get the sentiment behind "no more Alabama vs. Clemson" but if they are worthy of a top 4 playoff berth based on their performance THIS season, then they deserve to be in.

My issue is with the committee slobbering over Alabama's dominance the past few seasons. No. Decide on the top 4 based on THIS season. THIS season's strength of schedule. THIS season's performance. Same with UCF. "20 game winning streak dating back to last season!!" No thanks. What has UCF done THIS season?

I hope the committee will judge based on this season and this season only.

I would like to see ND penalized for not joining a conference in championship week. Not going to happen, but it sure would be fun to watch golden explosion! And the purple faced coach

You know. If they get left out because of that, then perhaps they will finally join a conference. We'll gladly take them in the Big Ten. It makes the most sense for them. Then again, all of their other sports are in the ACC, which makes no sense.
