Bovada Heisman Odds - Shea Patterson tied for 3rd

Submitted by Indy Pete - Go Blue on November 6th, 2018 at 9:57 AM

As of yesterday, Shea Patterson is tied for third with (little D)wayne Haskins for odds to win the Heisman trophy at 14/1.  Kyler Murray is 2nd at 6/1.  Tua Tagovailoa is at 1/10 (yes, 1/10 - ridiculous).

Now, I don't think Shea has a very legitimate shot at this year's Heisman, but I am thrilled with these current odds for what they mean about national recognition for Shea and the program.  Also, I would venture to put him as a top 3 candidate for next year's Heisman if he chooses to return.

If he comes back, he might become the first Michigan QB to go to New York in my lifetime (ever?).  But this year?  Nah.

I could certainly see him going to NY if he comes back. Another whole offseason to progress with DPJ, Black, and Collins (etc.). Four of five OL coming back. Offense could be really great next year. I certainly think Shea has more to think about NFL-wise than he thought he would before the year. He won't be drafted in the first two rounds as of today.

I'm not sure NFL scouts agree with you. Giants will probably take Herbert from Oregon first overall. Haskins and Drew Lock will probably be first rounders as well. This isn't such a bad draft class that teams who need QBs will pass on them in the first round. Finley, Jones, and Grier would go before Shea too. Possibly Stidham as well. Somebody will draft Jake Browning as well, and the Rypien kid from Boise gets love too. There's at least 7 or 8 QBs that I'd guess are ahead of Shea on draft boards, which probably translates to round 3 or 4.

Edit: Did some research. If Shea were the 8th QB drafted, in last year's draft that would have put him in the 5th round (Mike White - WKU/DAL), in the 2017 draft that would have put him in the 5th round (Nathan Peterman - PIT/BUF), and in the 2016 draft that would have put him in the 4th round (Dak Prescott - MSU/DAL). Seems like a safe bet that Shea would be a late 4th rounder or 5th rounder if the draft were tomorrow.

I agree with most of what you're saying, but it sounds like Herbert may be staying at Oregon for another year.

As much as I like Shea, the Giants taking him on day 2 as their first QB of the draft would be a monumentally stupid move and would set him up for a similar career trajectory to Deshone Kizer.

Yes. He's a top 3 QB in college football, he's eligible and solidly projected as a first round pick, and there's serious questions as to whether his head coach will still be there next year.

He should absolutely go and get his money, especially since he probably would land with a better franchise drafting their QB of the future (maybe Pittsburgh as BR approaches 40?), not with a struggling franchise in the first few picks.

It would appear that Harbaugh was invited to New York, but did not go: https://www.nytimes.com/1986/12/07/sports/testaverde-awarded-heisman.html

The award had been conceded to Testaverde long ago. But to suggest a measure of uncertainty, the club had invited five other ''leading candidates'' to the ceremonies. Three proved to be good sports by actually showing up: Palmer, Bosworth and Lockbaum.

A few more big games and he could get invited to New York, and Bovada agrees. Tua's gonna win, of course, but I can't think of many other options to be the other invited nominees. Having a Harbaugh-coached QB as a finalist would be great for the publicity and recruiting.

This year? I would be shocked if he ended up in the top 6-7 but reading this is nice all the same and a compliment to how well he has been doing.

Next year, if he stayed? Call me intrigued.

I think Shea is outstanding and has the tools to be a Heisman finalist, but the way we utilize him right now doesn't seem conducive to even being considered as a Heisman candidate. We run on like 70% of our plays or something like that, with him accounting for a small fraction of those. Again, he is outstanding and excels almost every time we use him, but we don't use him that much and Heisman finalists have gaudy stats.

Shea is a game manager on a team that is run-centric.  He won't win any Heismans throwing the ball 10 to 20 times per game.  Whatever works for Michigan to win.  You can have the Heisman.

Actually, Higdon should have a better shot than Shea.
