Open Thread: Quarterfinals - USA vs. Czech Republic

Submitted by goblueram on

We are now halfway through the quarterfinals.  The Swedes and Finns already advanced by beating Slovenia and Russia, respectively.  Here's how the bracket looks (my crude version):

The semifinals have the potential to be rematches of the last two Olympic finals, but the focus is now on 1998 gold medalists Czech Republic (seriously, Jagr was there).

USA! USA! USA!

LINK - if anyone is interested, I keep the ESPN box score up with the stream so I can see the numbers update periodically.

We've taken 9 shots on goal to 7 for the Czech Republic, so that's 6 saves for both Quick and Pavelec. We've also registered six assists (didn't think it was that many honestly) to their zero, unless ESPN is going haywire.

and this one is done.

Canada/Latvia still tied, despite huge shot differential (30-8).  Sweater will start to get tight if this goes on or if Latvia can catch a break.

up against a wall today (1 goal on 30 shots after 2).  Longer it goes on like this, the bigger factor the hockey gods will play in the outcome.  Hard to see them dropping this one, but stranger things have happened.

On 1:27 PP to start 3rd; Canada has time and fresh ice to get that next goal.
