Gameday traffic from Grand Rapids

Submitted by chad on November 1st, 2018 at 4:56 PM

Normally come from Saginaw area and traffics a breeze on on gamedays.

My 12 yr old son has a youth conference in Grand Rapids Fri/Sat. Hate for him to miss the game (he's super hyped & dad/son bonding).

Anyone go to games from GR? How's traffic? I'll be leaving at 1230pm heading to game.

Or don't ruin the custard by putting shit in it and putting it in the mixer.

Just get the chocolate plain straight out of the custard machine. And get it AFTER you eat your food when you are ready to eat the custard. It melts FAST.

Traffic is never too bad on I-96. Starts to slow a little only when you reach Ann Arbor city limits (duh). The only thing that can complicate that is an MSU home game with traffic going to Lansing--even then it's not too bad. Never fear: Sparty is at Maryland this weekend.

You'll be fine.  96 is never an issue, 23 is usually light until right around the M14 interchange.  Should take you no more than 2.5 hours to get into a spot, so you'll have 45 minutes to get into the stadium.

Made an account to comment. Having driven this for years on gameday it's never that bad. Sometimes can be faster getting into town if you drive through Jackson but the difference really isn't that noticeable. Definitely takes sub 2.5 hours. Will be on the same path as you, I will be waving! Go blue!

I take 23 to the Washtenaw Ave exit (37B) and then make my way to Eisenhower to get to my group's meeting spot. It gets a little heavy on the off-ramp but most don't seem to realize that both lanes turn right, so people clog up the right side and leave the left side wide open for folks like me to fly by nearly all the way to the stoplight.

Traffic from GR is usually moving at a steady clip on gamedays. As mentioned above, only MSU home games can affect that and even then it would only be an issue until Okemos. Once you get to Brighton it starts getting a little heavy as people jockey to get on to 23 S. If they have the third lane open on 23 then it'll be a breeze but it can bog down with only two lanes.

Rest assured, since MSU is at Maryland you will be among friends on your journey.

If you normally come from Saginaw, the only tricky stretches will be the ones you're already familiar with, I would think. Unless you want to swing through Jackson to 94.

I don't have anything useful to add, except that you're leaving 3:15 before kickoff and that doesn't leave you much extra margin. Make sure the tank is filled with gas, buy food before you pick him up, and just get down as fast as you can. A quick stop that turns into 20 minutes is fine on a normal trip, but that's 20 minutes you'll desperately want back if you're trying to make the game.

I drive to every game from GR and park/tailgate just north of the stadium. I take 96/127/94 and take the exit before the golf course.

For noon games I get to the stadium in 2 hours leaving at 6am and getting there at 8 with zero traffic slowdowns.

Planning on leaving at 8 this week FWIW.

Live in GR and we have gone several times for games in the past few years.  When we go to AA to pick up/drop off my student daughter, we always take 96 to 23.  For games we have had better luck taking 96 to 127 to 94 and coming into AA from the south side.  Sometimes the last couple miles til the exit are a little slow but we can sneak over into the neighborhoods south of Stadium Dr. where there is free parking on the street.  We have gotten there 20 min before game time and found street parking for free.  It's a decent walk but I work off my popped maize getting back to the car after the game.

Take 96 East thru Lansing

127 South to Jackson

94 East to Ann Arbor

Take the first Ann Arbor exit (172) on to Jackson Rd

Turn right on to W Stadium Blvd and it's a 2ish mile drive until you're at the stadium.

I live in GR and have season tickets.   If you park at Pioneer, the golf courses, or anywhere south of the stadium then I would suggest the 96-127-94 route that others have mentioned.   No MSU home game to worry about.  I-94 around Jackson is always busy but other than that traffic usually moves well.  You should make it to a parking spot in 2.5 hours or less.

I’ll add my opinion. Been making the drive for years. Highly recommend the 96-127-94 route but I would add that I take the Zeeb Rd exit which is a bit out of town but almost zero traffic. Head south on Zeeb and then take a left on to Scio Church. You’ll be on it for awhile and eventually it turns into 7th St. You’ll come out behind Pioneer. I’m usually sub 2 hours going that way.
