Gameday traffic from Grand Rapids
Normally come from Saginaw area and traffics a breeze on on gamedays.
My 12 yr old son has a youth conference in Grand Rapids Fri/Sat. Hate for him to miss the game (he's super hyped & dad/son bonding).
Anyone go to games from GR? How's traffic? I'll be leaving at 1230pm heading to game.

IMO there are way too many Culver's driving down from GR. We need highway burger diversification.

Culver's is the most mainstream fast food-ish restaurant that I have never eaten at. Not sure why that is.

Get a pot roast sandwich with a slice of cheddar & a chocolate concrete mixer with bananas & peanuts. Thank me later.

Or don't ruin the custard by putting shit in it and putting it in the mixer.
Just get the chocolate plain straight out of the custard machine. And get it AFTER you eat your food when you are ready to eat the custard. It melts FAST.

Definitely don't put shit in it. I agree, that would ruin the custard.

Culver’s makes a really good burger.

I know nothing about that stretch of ribbon highway, but I agree in general. Is a damn 5 Guys every 100 miles or so too much to ask?

Well there's at least one in GR, one in East Lansing, and presumably several in metro Detroit

Traffic is never too bad on I-96. Starts to slow a little only when you reach Ann Arbor city limits (duh). The only thing that can complicate that is an MSU home game with traffic going to Lansing--even then it's not too bad. Never fear: Sparty is at Maryland this weekend.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:08 PM ^
You'll be fine. 96 is never an issue, 23 is usually light until right around the M14 interchange. Should take you no more than 2.5 hours to get into a spot, so you'll have 45 minutes to get into the stadium.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:11 PM ^
Made an account to comment. Having driven this for years on gameday it's never that bad. Sometimes can be faster getting into town if you drive through Jackson but the difference really isn't that noticeable. Definitely takes sub 2.5 hours. Will be on the same path as you, I will be waving! Go blue!
November 1st, 2018 at 5:38 PM ^
Agree, 127 from Lansing to Jackson is usually clear sailing. I'd rather drive in the 94 traffic than deal with the traffic on 23.
November 1st, 2018 at 6:33 PM ^
this for sure; take 94 into town unless you plan on getting there early to tailgate for a few hours. there are usually no traffic issues in any direction, if you arrive a couple hours before kickoff.

I take 23 to the Washtenaw Ave exit (37B) and then make my way to Eisenhower to get to my group's meeting spot. It gets a little heavy on the off-ramp but most don't seem to realize that both lanes turn right, so people clog up the right side and leave the left side wide open for folks like me to fly by nearly all the way to the stoplight.
November 2nd, 2018 at 3:53 PM ^
Might be even better to take 127 S to 94 E and then get State street to get to Eisenhower. Might be longer (mileage) but easier traffic

Drove it for 8 1/2 years, 127 from Lansing to Jackson is a much better route, then 94 to Ann Arbor.
November 1st, 2018 at 7:44 PM ^
I take this route. 131 south to 94. Have had better luck over the years than taking 196. And yes, you get to avoid the spartys when they also have a home game.

Traffic from GR is usually moving at a steady clip on gamedays. As mentioned above, only MSU home games can affect that and even then it would only be an issue until Okemos. Once you get to Brighton it starts getting a little heavy as people jockey to get on to 23 S. If they have the third lane open on 23 then it'll be a breeze but it can bog down with only two lanes.
Rest assured, since MSU is at Maryland you will be among friends on your journey.

If you normally come from Saginaw, the only tricky stretches will be the ones you're already familiar with, I would think. Unless you want to swing through Jackson to 94.
I don't have anything useful to add, except that you're leaving 3:15 before kickoff and that doesn't leave you much extra margin. Make sure the tank is filled with gas, buy food before you pick him up, and just get down as fast as you can. A quick stop that turns into 20 minutes is fine on a normal trip, but that's 20 minutes you'll desperately want back if you're trying to make the game.

That gas/food suggestion is a good one.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:29 PM ^
There shouldn’t be any issues around Lansing. All 500 MSU fans should be at their game already.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:30 PM ^
I drive to every game from GR and park/tailgate just north of the stadium. I take 96/127/94 and take the exit before the golf course.
For noon games I get to the stadium in 2 hours leaving at 6am and getting there at 8 with zero traffic slowdowns.
Planning on leaving at 8 this week FWIW.

Live in GR and we have gone several times for games in the past few years. When we go to AA to pick up/drop off my student daughter, we always take 96 to 23. For games we have had better luck taking 96 to 127 to 94 and coming into AA from the south side. Sometimes the last couple miles til the exit are a little slow but we can sneak over into the neighborhoods south of Stadium Dr. where there is free parking on the street. We have gotten there 20 min before game time and found street parking for free. It's a decent walk but I work off my popped maize getting back to the car after the game.
November 1st, 2018 at 6:00 PM ^
I come from GR every game. Best to take 127 to 94. Exit at Jackson. Not only can 23 be an issue, but Main St. is awful.
November 1st, 2018 at 6:09 PM ^
Take 96 East thru Lansing
127 South to Jackson
94 East to Ann Arbor
Take the first Ann Arbor exit (172) on to Jackson Rd
Turn right on to W Stadium Blvd and it's a 2ish mile drive until you're at the stadium.

I come from the west. I prefer 96 to 23 to M-14. I can access north parking lots and west neighborhood lots easily. I also have easy access to Pioneer.
November 1st, 2018 at 6:41 PM ^
I live in GR and have season tickets. If you park at Pioneer, the golf courses, or anywhere south of the stadium then I would suggest the 96-127-94 route that others have mentioned. No MSU home game to worry about. I-94 around Jackson is always busy but other than that traffic usually moves well. You should make it to a parking spot in 2.5 hours or less.
November 1st, 2018 at 7:53 PM ^
Yup, as others have mentioned, 96 east to 127 south to 94 east. It’s the easiest way there & back. Enjoy the game! Go Blue!
November 1st, 2018 at 10:43 PM ^
I’ll add my opinion. Been making the drive for years. Highly recommend the 96-127-94 route but I would add that I take the Zeeb Rd exit which is a bit out of town but almost zero traffic. Head south on Zeeb and then take a left on to Scio Church. You’ll be on it for awhile and eventually it turns into 7th St. You’ll come out behind Pioneer. I’m usually sub 2 hours going that way.
November 1st, 2018 at 10:45 PM ^
And leaving the game I take the AA-Saline/Main St back to 94. Traffic is all one way. Even w golf course & Pioneer traffic it flows quicker than any other way.
