Maryland Governor calls Maryland BOR to "reconsider their decisions" about Durkin and co
Hopefully we can avoid this going into a political debate, but I think the Governor of Maryland telling its flagship public university that they messed up is very relevant. The public response to Maryland's decision has been universally negative so far but this is by far the most important statement in that regard.
The only place I've seen defend Durkin are Maryland fans on their SBNation site. Those fans are just as morally bankrupt as OSU, PSU and MSU fans have shown themselves to be in recent years.

I want to not stray into politics, but there is an election next week and the Governor’s challenger immediately decried the Board of Regents’ decision, tying it to Governor Hogan as he appointed a majority of the Board. Hogan initially did not have a strong position until it looked like it might gain traction in the final week before the election — it is not clear that pressure will be applied beyond next Tuesday.
(I guess this is mildly political, but frankly politics is inextricably tied to the issue, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

As it now appears Durkin has been fired, I guess the Board if Regents couldn’t withstand the pressure for the week. Right decision, definitely took way too long, and the wrong way, to get there.

sure, it took too long - they are turtles after all

Much like the staee and ped state board of regents/trustees, they should all be fired!!!

Trustees are a joke. They meet ~ 7 times per year. They know what the president wants them to know.

The president wanted Durkin fired and they threatened to fire him.

one of the rare times that worrying about getting reelected actually resulted in good governing.

You could write a graduate-level Public Relations textbook just using case studies from the Big Ten East over the last decade.

You probably only have to go back one year.

Fair, but I really want a Dave Brandon chapter in the book.

And Penn State.

Hey, Governor Snyder, do something!

Vlady, always trying mess with our political machinations.

Yeah, Vlad. Stick to domestic political malpractice and nuclear threats.

Jesus. I just somewhat reluctantly voted for Hogan and this really counts against him in my book. Wish I could have that one back.
Edit: Never mind. Looks like he was actually pushing for him to be fired (rather than retained) after the BOR wanted to keep him. Then he was fired. All hail Larry.

The Big Ten East - where 50% of the programs aren't shit shows.
Can we spin this into an ad?

Why would ANYONE want Durkin to stay, even for selfish reasons? I think Matt Canada is doing a fine job and if he can keep OSU to under 50 points, he'd be doing an even better job than Durkin ever did
October 31st, 2018 at 7:54 PM ^
Matt Canada has done as good a job as could be expected under the circumstances. The players have been distracted from the get-go this Fall. I wonder if he's the front-runner to get the HC job? I think he deserves a shot based on performance to date.

There are boosters that Durkin had given special access to the program. They wanted to keep him and they have a fair amount of influence.

Don't believe any politician. I am sure there is something in it for them.

How in the hell does the AD survive? Good for the governor whatever the motivation. Snyder??!???
October 31st, 2018 at 10:07 PM ^
The AD at the time of the incident already left. The guy there now was the Asst AD, named interim at the time. Pretty sure he was recently given the permanent job.

John Engler would have flipped the Governor the Marcus Hall double bird on this.
