WGIBTU? Week 1

Submitted by BornInAA on October 31st, 2018 at 2:58 PM

For hump day consideration, I've created a Who's Got It Better Than Us ranking system, based upon current polls for the top 3 sports. 25 points given to top team and so on.

Will see if I can do this weekly until next spring...

Yeah... It's a flawed system. Notre Dame is essentially getting credit for being #26 in basketball, where they are ranked around #33.

EDIT: If you're getting points for difference from #26, then Notre Dame would have 36 points. So therefore we can conclude that Notre Dame does NOT have it better than us. And considering Kentucky doesn't have a D-1 Hockey program, their credit for a #26 ranking in hockey is null, and they don't have it as good as us either.

Neat idea but this seems biased towards programs that have college hockey, which is a minority.  Looking at just football and basketball we would be second behind Kentucky, surprisingly.

Yeah. To make it more universal, you could include baseball rankings for schools whose "third" sport was baseball and not hockey. Just make the category "Third Sport".

Don't know the best way to determine which is the third sport for the schools that do compete in both - probably whichever is ranked higher at the time. That way teams like Florida or Florida State would get their baseball ranking, and we would get our hockey ranking.

Shouldn't Minnesota-Duluth, St. Cloud State, Providence, Gonzaga, Duke, Virginia, and so forth round out the top 25? Doesn't change Michigan's #2 ranking but aren't we cherry-picking all football for the rest of the "TOTAL" rankings list?

Your formula is messed up. ND is not ranked in basketball so should not get a 0! They should get an infinity!
