What's your general rooting interest rule? Picks this weekend?

Submitted by canzior on October 26th, 2018 at 10:48 AM

Few important/relevant games this weekend.  As a rule, I generally like chaos, and it seems most people like big upsets when it doesn't involve their team. Others prefer chalk. As nice as it was to see OSU got absolutely embarrassed, and in such humiliating fashion, as a primetime ABC game...it doesn't actually benefit Michigan very much. And actually the loss is causing OSU to fix problems that they may not have fixed, had they not lost.  (Sidenote: I feel like the difference between OSU and Michigan on defense is that the Michigan defense is greater than the sum of its parts, where OSU's defense is good because they have so many athletes, not necessarily because of the scheme or playcalling)

So this weekends games:

Are you rooting for Clemson or FSU?

Texas or Ok St?

ND or Navy?

UGA or Fla?

Oklahoma or KState?

PSU or Iowa?

Purdue or MSU?

It seems as though (assuming M wins out) that the toughest competition are LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, and Clemson.  I add Clemson because if they were to drop a game, I would guess Michigan and perhaps even Oklahoma (should they win out) would jump them due to poor SOS.  Even a game liek Purdue vs MSU...I am thinking I want all Michigan opponents to win every game because it boosts the SOS. But in my heart, I want Iowa and Purdue to roll this weekend.

I don't care about Michigan's resume getting better if State wins more games. State sucks... They've already lost 3 games and will finish with at least 5.

Go Boilermakers!

Well, obviously, I have to root for Iowa, since they're my employer.

Other than that, I'm rooting for Purdue, because Fuck Sparty.  I'm not vested in the rest of it at this point, I have Halloween decorations to finish up.

Honestly I want MSU to win for two reasons: to make OSU look even worse, and to make Marcus Ray look like a doofus (not that he doesn't already, but more so).

We already beat Sparty so if anything it helps us look better. I've always been one to root against our rivals all the time, and I'll feel fine about it if they lose, but man, Marcus Ray's bullshit just drives me crazy.

Given that I have no ability to determine how any of these results will or will not benefit UM in the eyes of the CFP at the end of the season, I tend to hope that the teams that we play later in the year have to play close games that forces them to open up their playbooks and show their hands as much as possible so that we'll be better prepared when we face them.  Aside from that?  Meh.

The one i'm most concerned about is UGA v Florida. Both have potential to jump Michigan because of the SEC infatuation (assuming the winner beats Bama). You nailed it on the head regarding Texas/OU and I would add ND where this is where Michigan benefits most obviously if they lose.

For the Big Ten West, i'm rooting for Purdue cause why not? The only way for Purdue to make it ot he championship is to win out and anyone West team that makes it most likely will be ranked anyway (save for maybe Northwestern?). Plus Purdue beating State would just be hilarious.

I think PSU might get a Ferentz special.  If they lose that game I think they might collapse completely for the year.  Obviously I'd rather they win so we have another W against a ranked opponent.

OK losing would be great, but unless K State made a deal with the devil, it's not happening tomorrow.  Hopefully WVU will end their playoff chances.

Basically I'd like everyone ahead of us in the AP poll to lose.

MSU situation

If they lose a bunch, well we just beat a bad MSU team meme comes back, so I would rather they run the table and win a bowl game so we beat a 10-3 MSU

I want Iowa to truck PSU so they are broken - we recruit against PSU and then losing their next 3 against Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin would be awesome

I want Georgia to beat Florida to eliminate Florida winning out and being a 1-loss SEC team that doesn't make the conference championship game (which happens if Kentucky also wins out)

I want Texas to lose - more 1-loss P5 teams losing is good for us

FSU over Clemson - go Willy and better for Michigan

basically, anything that is better for Michigan is what I root for

Agreed.

This, 100%.

Anything that makes Michigan's argument better. If a team is thought to be in the playoffs or in contention for the playoffs, I root for them to lose.

The exception will be Alabama in a couple of weeks against LSU. Bama needs to win that game. Bama always seems to get the benefit of the doubt and them losing against LSU could be bad for Michigan as it could mean two SEC teams in the championship.

That and an undefeated ND and Clemson would be no bueno.

I agree with most of this as well.  Hope Iowa beats up on PSU in a physical win and comes out top. Don Brown is going to have the defense ready to go for PSU when they arrive in the Big House. A down year from PSU when they have the last year of McSorley really changes the complexion of the B1G East for the next few years.

Another TX loss would be excellent for Michigan, as would a Florida loss tomorrow. Likely that both would be knocked out of the CFP.  Alabama over Georgia in the SEC title game and then Georgia is out.

I think we want Clemson to win - Michigan's straightest path to the CFP is winning out and chalk results at the top - Alabama, Clemson and ND all win out. Michigan's competition would essentially be down to a Big 12 champion, 1-loss Oklahoma, but that loss came to a 2-loss Texas team vs. our road loss to a CFP-bound Notre Dame.  I don't think a decision between a 1-loss Clemson and a 1-loss Michigan will go well for Michigan, although presumably the committee could just take both.

I would prefer PSU win this weekend to make our (potential) win over them look better.  MSU can lose by 50 for the rest of the season for all I'm concerned.

Aside from that, I'm rooting against Clemson and Oklahoma.

I'm rooting for Penn St to beat Iowa, because they'll stay ranked and it'll look better when we stomp them. Other than that, I root for any team ranked higher or near UM to lose, and ofcourse I root against OSU always(obviously they're off this week, but I'll be rooting for MSU to beat them as well).

I would like Clemson to lose a game and this week is probably the most likely game left. I agree that if Clemson loses they will probably drop to #4 in the playoff standings. That would set up Bama vs. Clemson in the first round and the two most talented teams in the country. I think Michigan can beat ND/Oklahoma or whoever else would be the #2/3 seed in that potential match-up. Having to only play one of Bama or Clemson would greatly increase Michigan's title chances.

The rest of the games don't really matter. I'd like Texas to lose because I think they are a fraud. I want Iowa to win because I respect their program ten times more than Penn State's. I want Purdue to win because Rondale Moore is cool and every win pushes Brohm closer to Louisville.

I want to see Ped State and East Landfill State U lose every remaining game. I simply can't overcome my degree of contempt for those programs.

And I will always root for Navy over ND. Always.

Interested in the outcome of the PSU-Iowa game as UM is a faster, more athletic version of Iowa.

Go Purdue!

I always root against OSU, MSU, ND and PSU.

Unless a single game will hand us the division or a play off birth directly, I don't root based on SOS, like opponents, etc until the final playoff rankings come out and we are relevant for the top 4

Until then, fuck those teams every week.

Clemson losing a game to an unranked FSU team would definitely help our cause. They’d definitely drop below us. FSU has the same caliber of athletes that Clemson has, so they’ve got a shot. But they’re a very discombobulated team, and FSU’s awful OL going up against Clemson’s murderous DL? Francois is going to get killed.

Would like to see PSU win. Whatever gets them higher up in the rankings. We need as many good looking resume wins as possible. That being said, I’d still laugh if they lost.

Would like to see UGa win because it’d me my wife happy, but I wouldn’t be mad if they lost. One less team to contend with for that final spot, and Florida ain’t beating Alabama in an SEC title game.

MSU over Purdue. I hate MSU, but what they do from here on out is irrelevant to us. And if we’re fortunate enough to make it to Indy, I don’t want to face a high powered offense that is looking better and better each week. Purdue would play like it had nothing to lose, and Rondale Moore is the real deal.

ND over Navy. Torn here because them losing definitely opens us up for getting out of the dreaded 4 seed against Bama if we win out, but also makes our lone loss look less good. I’d like to see them lose the last week of the season to a USC team that finds a way to win out from here.

K State all the way. Won’t happen, but again, one less playoff contender to deal with at season’s end. Same with seeing Ok State beat Texas.

I get what you are saying about Ohio State, but I am all for them losing to Purdue and hopefully losing again, even if it's to MSU. While it would be awesome to beat OSU and get to the playoff, I'd be happy to go into OSU knowing that even if UM loses, they are going to Indy with a shot at the Rose Bowl.

I would prefer MSU and PSU both lose. I get that if PSU wins it would give us another potential win over a ranked team, but if both of them lose, then they’d be eliminated from the East.

I would also prefer NW beats Wiscy. I would love to not have to play Wiscy again if Michigan makes it to Indy.

Texas losing to OK St would be nice. Clemson losing to FSU would be even better.

I would prefer UF beat UGA because Florida would get curb stomped by Bama in the SEC championship and would leave Bama as the only SEC team in the playoff.

ND needs to lose one because fuck them and we would probably jump them even though they own the head to head.

OSU obviously doesn’t play this week, but I definitely would like them to lose 1 more game before Michigan comes into town. It would be nice to know that Michigan can still play for a B1G title even if they lose.

If Michigan beats PSU, this team will most likely roll into Columbus at 11-1 and in the top 3-4.

I want another OSU loss. Another loss for them and a Michigan win over Penn State should wrap up a spot in the BIG Championship (assuming Michigan doesn't crap the bed against Indiana or Rutger).

Another OSU loss with a victory over PSU means the worst Michigan should end up is with a spot in the BIG Championship game.

Exactly. Whatever problems seems to have during a loss, they find a way to fix them in the following games. I don't want OSU still going into our game with everything in front of them, and everything on the line. Meyer is already going to have them jacked up enough for a rivalry game as it is.

Would rather they come into that game with nothing to play for (by their standards) except their pride. Hell, its not like we haven't had years and years of going into that game with nothing to play for except OUR pride.

I mean, fuck state, but they can win the rest of their games and I won't care. It only helps us. Either way, their fanbase won't be happy. They lost their annual superbowl.

Sad, non-couch burning Sparties make me happy.

worrying about final records in college football is like worrying about where the ball will end up in a giant plinko board.  who knows, not worth the trouble.

but what is worth the thought molecules is pulling for favorite teams:

always pull for the academies, so go navy

used to like MSU, long story short, i hope they get their figurative head stove in.  boiler-up!

and though not asked, go NW, my second favorite team to upset wisconsin.

lastly, go 'bye', beat ohio.
