Quinn Nordin/Kicker Question

Submitted by UESWolverine on October 21st, 2018 at 10:59 PM

During the broadcast, Joel Klatt made reference to Quinn Nordin missing half of his kicks in practice. This came up when Harbaugh decided not to kick a FG from 50+ in the first half (within Quinn's range obviously). Does anyone have any insight as to whether or not coaches take into account how a kicker is doing in warm-ups before a game to decide when to use/not use them during a game? I just thought maybe the wind/weather was the issue or the field wasn't in great shape and I didn't hear Harbaugh comment on why he decided not to got for the FG.

It's got to be an issue during actual practice too- and a well known problem. It was the same story in the Wisconsin game, also the Northwestern game. He actually made all his kicks in the Northwestern game, but literally shanked every other kick in warmups before the game and at halftime. I hope he gets some stuff sorted out on the bye week.

I think all of us have concerns about Nordin's kicking right now.  If I'm Harbaugh I've really got to consider giving Moody a chance on some of the shorter field goal attempts.  Nordin's FG attempt this weekend was one of the worst kicks I've seen.  Complete duck hook.

Something is not right.   The ball is coming off with zero trajectory.

He kicks much better from the left hash but that’s a high school kick he just missed.

Harbaugh needs to make a decision.  If this isn’t fixed It will cost us.

Without having seen it a second time but in slo-mo zoom I can't corroborate but the MSU audio feed had indicated Nordin's kick was tipped - that helped it look terribly bad.

That said there has to be something mechanical with either him or the holder, or perhaps he has some sort of undisclosed injury, or it could simply be all in his head as noted by others.  If that's the case he needs to find his happy place so he can kick them like he has in the past.

Quinn Nordin needs to take some acid or something.  Dude has some demons that remind me of me when i was 20 or so (now 30).  Any time I see some one in a game like pool, darts, or pretty much any other bar skill game, get riled up, I am immediately thinking they are not mentally tough enough to be consistent.

Hate to sound like I am attacking him cause he is a massive talent, but it's all mental for that dude.

Kickers are so weird. Seems like Nordin's a coin flip to either make a 45 yarder that would be good from 70, or to completely shank it. And unfortunately, shank seems to be winning out lately

He's also a student athlete who takes exams and writes papers.  He may also have a significant other who demands time of him.  Maybe his toga did not have enough pieces of flare and his fraternity brothers shamed him mercilessly.  Let's ponder the whole spectrum of possibilities.  It's "Improvement Week" and no doubt Coach is addressing how he can personally help him.  If he still has the YIPS against Indiana I will be worried.  We need every damn point on November 24.

Of course they take it into consideration. My buddy texted me before Wisconsin kick-off and mentioned Nordin was missing everything in pregame. I think Herbstreit mentioned it in the broadcast last week as well.

I really hope he can figure it out.  He is still like 11/15 on the year which is not awful by any means, but the trajectory of his kicks off his foot look really shaky.

He's got 2 weeks to practice on mechanics with the staff before PSU. If he can make a few in a row his confidence will be back through the roof.
