Article about Ambry Thomas and the rivalry

I met Ambry Thomas this past summer when he was my seatmate on a flight to Dallas (he was going down to train with Jourdan Lewis).  My wife got me to stop peppering him with questions after about 20 minutes, and when he comes across the screen and I call him "my buddy" she suggests that "your hostage" is more accurate.  She's probably right, but he is a good sport, and a very nice guy.

In any case, I thought that this piece about his friendship with MSU LB Tryriq Thompson gives sense of why this rivalry is so important even if it isn't The Game.  If you live in Michigan, you're likely to have a friend, co-worker, or relative (or all of the above) on the other side:

This game is an important game, saying otherwise is lying to yourself. In the past this was a fun regular season game, but not much more than that. But after these last ten years and having attended the last two games against them in the Big House and seeing them pick up victories when we had the ability to bury them but couldn't put it away, it makes my blood boil. We need to unload on them, we have no excuses left anymore.

My best friend is an MSU fan. A diehard one. The kind who can't have a rational football discussion about MSU or U of M.

For this week...fuck him and every other Spartan slappy.

This constant justification for why we want to beat MSU is so weird. Im an alum but besides that have no other allegiance to the state. Beating these fucking tools is what I want to see most every year. More than OSU. These motherfuckers aren't on our level for anything. They need to be put in their place.
