Its the easiest way to get people to call in . Be negative. It gets the fans riled up  .

He never has anything positive to say . Then when he is negative about something and the negativity is accurate he can say , see I told you so . Which is exactly what he is doing here .

I always laugh when people call in and say " You tell it like it is Mike "

I've never listened to his show prior to this viewing this clip.  If he's that annoying while bashing sparty, he must be absolutely unlistenable on a normal day.

Sounds like he's trying too hard to be a poor man's Jim Rome, but he can't even pull that off.

And if you listened to him later in the day, you saw how he segwayed from this into discrediting Michigan.  Now, as Valenti puts it, since Wisconsin and MSU “suck,” the BIG is “a joke” and Michigan has literally no way of validating itself and this weeks game against Wisconsin is “meaningless.”

Seriously, when it comes to football, even when he speaks ill of MSU, his only real intent is to hate on Michigan.  He is a little more genuine when it comes to basketball, but not much.

His only sure-fire way of baiting people to actually react and call is by insulting or trolling Michigan. Otherwise he doesn't get that many calls, especially from Sparty fans.

Even when Michigan is successful, he starts with "Michigan SHOULD HAVE won... but unless Michigan wins x, y, and z, their season is a failure."

Everything is either a success or a failure.  Then again, that's the tried and true method of sports radio sucking in callers; set up a dichotomy and get callers to call in and argue.

I agree. He also said MSU quit vs. NW. It's a built in reason for now if MSU loses. Well we suck so it doesn't matter if you beat everybody on your schedule. I just wish 1050am had better signal so I never have to hear his whiny voice again.

Funny, just last week he was calling Northwestern a high school team.

The guy is a clown of the highest order.

Meh... he’s basically a guy posting on the internet at Rcmb , or many other sports blogs...he just managed to somehow get on the radio.

1 week- we’re amazing!

next week- we suck, fire everyone!

great to see such a troll and fan base meltdown though

He is good at remembering names and naming obscure sports figures. I once saw a story on religious cult leaders. One guy said if you learn a few Bible verses, people will be impressed with that. When you speak about anything as if you believe it as well, people will want to listen to you. That's really all he's doing.

He is so calculated about how he talks about Michigan, so that he will never have to say anything nice. Yesterday I tuned in for some schadenfreude, he just kept saying how bad Wisconsin is. "Michigan should kill them. Bet your mortgage. They lost to BYU. MSU sucks too, so we won't know anything about Michigan until after Penn State."

While I don't think Wisconsin or MSU are great, Wisconsin is a top 15 team with an elite OL/DL. MSU is still the 31st best team (s&p+) and would be a road rivalry win. Neither of those are EASY wins, FPI gives us a 50/50 shot of going 2-0. Even if we manage to go 3-0 the next 3 games, it'll still be "There's a top 4/5 and everyone else. Harbaugh still hasn't made Michigan into an elite team like OSU." Michigan could win the national championship this year and he'll say it was because CFB had a down year, even though this year's Alabama is probably the best team in the last 50 years. In his mind, Michigan can never have beaten a good team, because if Michigan can beat them, they're a bad team...

I am actually surprised he talked about the MSU loss as much as he did. He usually either takes Monday off after a loss, or will say "Yeah, MSU sucked. WHAT ABOUT THOSE LIONS THOUGH!?!?!"

Valenti talks about how Michigan and Penn State have pushed past MSU (as if that's an actual challenge), but guaranteed should we come up short in chasing a Big Ten Conference Championship this season, Mike will be on the radio the following Monday with the "Harbaugh in Year 4 with nothing to show for it", hot take.

I love how MSU fans act like they have been dominating us for decades. It’s as if they are surprised UM got better under Harbaugh. It was only a matter of time. Of course that means nothing if they somehow beat us next week.

Agree.  Valenti thinks the MSU spiral is due to MSU, when it's really b/c these two guys named Harbaugh and Franklin showed up (the latter aided by softening of PSU penalties).  Dantonio started his "run" in 2010, which was  Rodriguez's last year, and Sandusky was indicted in 2009.  Dantonio's run really ended in 2015.  Harbaugh started that year and Franklin started in 2014.  Coincidence? I think not.

That argument doesn't hold any weight when he managed to beat both programs last year and has also beaten Urban twice. Also, your timeline is off.

MSU being a good program is not mutually exclusive with Michigan and PSU being good. Yes, it makes it harder to be B1G champions, but it wouldn't affect the product on the field for MSU.

Ummmmm did he call him Dantoni around the 1:45 mark? I couldn’t bear to rewind to check but I could swear he did. Only made it 3 minutes, he, Valenti, is still a whiny bitch. But I like what he was saying.

This stuff is great for talk radio, and is exactly why I can't stand this kind of talk radio. Valenti does anger and ranting well. He is good at eliciting emotion.

But this is emotion at the expense of reason. He's talking about "arrogance" and "quitting" and "country club" and "pride." Nothing quantifiable, nothing that can be analyzed or disproven. It's feelingsball.

I mean, I would love for him to be correct here. But if he's correct, it's by accident. He's good at attracting a big mouth-breathing listener base, but he isn't good at building a case and drawing logical conclusions.

Michigan has its share of anger-baiting, too, but at least there's a good subset of Michigan types that try to go deeper and understand more about what they're covering. Brian, of course, and other folks in the blogosphere. Baumgartner produces mixed emotions, but he at least tries and works at it. MSU has Valenti and Couch. That alone is reason to root for someone else.
