the 2019 OT recruit

Submitted by Alumnus93 on October 5th, 2018 at 12:02 PM

Noticed Trevor Keegan visits OSU tomorrow, and then to us next weekend.  Currently sits at 64% crystal ball to us, yet Wiltfong put in his for Georgia a few weeks ago and his hit rate is quite high.

Bryce Benhart doesnt appear to have scheduled an official to us, and we have no crystal balls.

Danielson Ike is CBed 100% to Miami.

Anyone wanna chime in here who we are most likely to get?

Highly unlikely as that is the second weekend of playoffs in Minnesota.  His team is ranked #1 so unless there is a major upset or the game is scheduled for Friday night it probably won't happen.  A night game might make it a little more likely depending on flight availability.

No inside information but everything I've read seems like we're a less than 50% shot at any of them as it stands today. Believe we have 3 OT in the class already (Not sure if they'll all stay at OT or maybe some tweeners that move to OG) but it would  be great to add one more top caliber guys

No... we have one OT so far in Jones, and he was Drevnos' guy, not Warinner's... the other three are interior guys, and this has been our problem for a decade now...  so you can imagine my concern here if Jones were to bail.. I've seen this film many times the past decade...

The next OT recruit we get is absolutely critical to the program.

Woody Wommack at Rivals saw Jones play when Grayson took on Bergen Catholic a few weeks ago and was adamant he's a guard in college.

Couple that with Trieu's take that Barnhart is best suited for guard in college and we're looking at an OL class with five inside players if they don't land Keegan or Benhart. Hopefully it's not 2016 all over again.

Why not see what happens before you head for the ledge.

Except for OSU's Isaiah Prince, the majority of the preseason and current top rated OT's in the B1G were also predicted to be inside lineman by the "experts"; Ryan Bates-Penn State, David Edwards-Wisconsin. Also nationally, of PFF Top5 highest ranked OT's Dalton Risner-Kansas State, and Bobby Evans-Oklahoma were also destined for interior line.

I think we have two in Jones and Barnhart. Jones was always an OT and Barnhart may have grown an inch or two and has long arms necessary for it. Either way, none of them are immediate contributors. I think Benhart and Keegan could be that immediate contribution piece. Ultimately though, I expect Hudson and Mayfield to man the spots for the next 2 years at least, with Hayes, Steuber, Jones, Barnhart, and whomever we recruit after that providing backups.

Barnhart is a long way away from seeing any PT at UM.  He plays for a school that still runs the wishbone (according to another poster), he’s never pass blocked, and the competition he plays against in high school is awful.   There are not too many 180 pound DEs at Michigan so he’ll need a few years to adjust to actual football players.

Probably $100 haha. But I would say that we have a 80% chance of landing Keegan, and a 10-2 season will make it 100%. He and his family are Michigan fans or at least were before he became a big time prospect, Michigan has been in on him early and often, and there are strong ties between Warinner and the area where Keegan is from from when Ed was the OL Coach at Illinois, Notre Dame and Ohio State. He's very well respected, and honestly one of the things Jim Harbaugh probably miscalculated when he first arrived was how cliquey the midwest is in terms of connections. Drevno hadn't been west of California since 2002, and had never been in the midwest.  We saw it with how poorly we recruited Michigan once Wheatley left. The ChicagoLand Area has too much talent to consistently get skunked.

There is no chance of Trevor keegan if Tim Drevno is here, there is a very good chance with Warinner.

Right.

It's not a question.

We are laboring at a disadvantage because we do not do this (and similar things) to the extent that other programs do. They are paying their recruits six figures.

Our 2nd stringers have both got rave reviews and are both Freshmen.  We have a very good prospect from Georgia coming in this class as well as 1 or 2 more that could grow in to being tackles or are tweeners and another kid in Ryan Hayes that is redshirting this year..   You can't have 15 highly rated tackles on your roster.

We are fine.

Really hoping we can land Benhart, his film is the best of the bunch IMO. He does not give interviews or talk to the media though so pretty impossible to get a read on him. He is visiting for the PSU game though so there's that.
