The symbol Chase flashed after his sack vs. Northwestern
I saw a post where someone was asking what the symbol was that Chase flashed with his hands after sacking Thorson this past Saturday.
Turns out, it was a crown to honor a friend of his, Kate Palmero, a Michigan student who had been in the hospital in Chicago fighting leukemia. The crown represents her sorority Zeta Tau Alpha. Zeta Tau Alpha’s logo is an aqua crown to go along with their motto of “Seek the Noblest.”
He chose that moment to honor her in her fight.

Nice story. But doing that risks an unsportsmanlike penalty under NCAA anti-celebration and anti-taunting rules. Not a definite infraction here, of course. And of course it wasn't called. But I don't want to give B1G refs any additional, unreviewable, chances to screw Michigan.
I'd rather see every great play by a Michigan football player be celebrated by handing the football to a referee.

I understand your concern, but it would be interesting to see if the Big Ten would be forced to squirm a little bit because they penalized a player who was making a show of support for a sick friend. I doubt they acknowledge anyone made a mistake, but making Delaney/B1G look bad on the ESPN is always going to be at least a minor victory.
Players should be able to celebrate to a reasonable degree, in any case.

It's more of a shame to watch two of the best DL that I've seen play at Michigan get their arms yanked out of their sockets on every play without an occasional holding call.

You see, you are making the completely-welcome point that Big Ten refs suck, and that they rarely do us any favors.
I agree. Hence, my suggestion that notwithstanding the fact that Chase Winovich has a terrific story, it's better to not give our despicable Big Ten refs any stray chance to screw with Harbaugh or our team.
In this post I:
- Expressed baseline sympathy/admiration for Chase Winovich;
- Expressed suspicion of Big Ten refs' treatment of Michigan football;
- Hoped for a course of action that gave us the best chance to win games with fewer penalties, and particularly illegitimate penalties, and;
- Hyperlinked to a 2018 article on the latest permutations of the unsportsmanlike conduct rule, without any editorializing of my own.
- All the while acknowledging that Winovich didn't actually violate the rule as far as I could tell. I just don't want there to be any potential for a shit-call violation in some of the very big games coming up (MSU, PSU, OSU).
For those outrageous opinions, I get the full MGoTreatment. Lulz. Never upset the hivemind.

[whispers back] But the post was really all about an on-field gesture that Winovich made, after a big TFL.
Other possible nice gestures on the part of Winovich, that would not raise any questions about an unsportsmanlike penalty:
- Write an op-ed for the Daily;
- Send a Tweet;
- Do a Facebook post;
- Put the friend's name on your wrist tape*;
- Mention her prominently in your post-game interviews;
- Etc., etc., etc.
*Which might be another rules question. Mirroring the sort of concern I first posted.

I wrote the opposite about Winovich in this case; I wrote that it was a nice story. That Winovich didn't deserve an unsportsmanlike penalty; but I would sure hate to see him get one under circumstances like this.
I don't write posts to piss everybody off, Bando. I write posts that say what I think is significant and what I intend whether or not they piss everybody off. Pissing you off personally is just a side benefit.

Yah obviously , I’m more referring to his emotional tenacity. He doesn’t take plays off and he fights for every play regardless if he’s not getting home. He’s a smart player as well and you can tell he uses scheme to attack each play. I have yet to see that guy not look pumped up. That juice he has is what wins championships.

love the gesture though. and mgrowold is right, it would be a perfect michigan penalty to have combined that with the higdon false call.
