Chase Winovich chasing TFL record
Chase Winovich currently is tied for 1st in the nation in total TFL's with 10.5
Michigan's record for TFL's in a season was Shawn Crable with 29 in 2007 (which ranks 5th all-time!!!)
The national record for TFL's in a season is 32 by Geroge Selvie of South Florida in 2007.
Incredible season so far and something to watch going forward.

I expect teams will start throwing more and more bodies at him and we'll start to see other players picking up more impressive numbers in the scoresheet.

Especially if Gary is out...

and holding him even more if that is possible. I mean, can't hurt.

10.5/5 = 2.1/game.
We're guaranteed (presuming two more wins, lol Maryland and Rutgers) 13 games, so extrapolate the trend and Chase is at 27.3.
Add the B1G Championship game and he's at 29.4 (record).
Do that, and play to the National Championship Game (15 games total) and he's got 31.5 - so pretty darned close.
Lesson? Team success = individual success.

I do not think Maryland will be easy, they have a pretty good run D. The offensive line will again have to work hard against them.

That despite never getting a holding call.

Holding calls don't help your TFL numbers.

Holding calls might discourage rampant holding.
Not being held *might* increase the chances of getting into the backfield more often.
Getting into the backfield more often might help with TFL numbers, but of course that is pure speculation.

Going back to last year (his first as a starter), Winovich only has one game without a TFL (MSU in 2017).

better headline: Chase Winovich chases son of bitch
not an accurate headline, mind you. but better.

I doubt he'll get it. Definitely an impressive stat, but the teams we're facing in the coming weeks will be getting considerably tougher. But 20-25 is definitely something he can achieve.
Chase is making himself a lot of money over the course of these last few weeks. I doubt he'll ever be a Day 1 guy, but he could work his way into Day 2 for sure.

Winovich has been great, and I think his greatness is demonstrating that Rashan Gary is a player like Peppers was in that his play, while excellent, doesn’t quite match the level of hype surrounding his physical abilities.

Without putting one player down, it's hard to compare two players, but Gary is hurt and he gets double, and triple teamed more than Chase. Hell, on 2 play's Saturday Chase wasn't even blocked. I can honestly say i have never seen a play where Gary wasn't blocked. So lets appreciate one player without denigrating another. Besides how can a player be named defensive player of the year and All America be considered over hyped?

As I said, Gary is excellent, but he still has never had a game like Winovich had last Saturday. Yes, he gets a lot of attention from defenses, but so does every top player. He just has yet to dominate like most supposed he would. I don’t think I’m denigrating him by stating the obvious.

Calling a player over hyped is denigrating him, not to mention calling Peppers, (defensive poy and an All America) over hyped. So yeah, just admit it.

To me it's been obvious he has been playing hurt (shoulder) and I have to imagine it's dulled his chances at being a Clowney type, electric player. He's been really, really good and that's even taking into account double teams he battles often. It also takes into account he maybe has gotten to far upfield at times and maybe allowed a lane to open for a mobile QB....but no Dlineman is perfect. Anyway...he's been very good but I feel his shoulder injury he's battling through is making us not appreciate him nor his even willing to battle through said injury for 2 seasons now.

Crable had a not-too-shabby 2007.

OUCH... you had to remind of the first game in 2007...
I keep trying to repress that memory!!

For every TFL, he had a play where he blew his assignment and gave up 10+ yards. Not to mention the mind-numbing penalties, specifically the game in 06. He was truly a jekyll and hyde player.
