James Franklin is an IDIOT

pretty horrible collapse in Happy Valley.   A failed two pt conversion, going for it on 4th down in field goal range, then the icing on the cake...not even using McSorley on the last play.  Hope recruits were watching...

People were insistent that McSorely's success was all luck with great jump-ball receivers last year, then it was because Saquon Barkley was unstoppable last year. Now it's that Franklin is lucky to have him.

Franklin is exceeding my expectations, regrettably. The last play was junk (probably the OC's call there), but I feel worse about our game against PSU than I did before today. They look excellent.

BTW, the "let's see how he does without McSorely next year" take won't go very far. Unless they've got a top QB ready to go, PSU seems like the ideal destination for either Jalen Hurts or Kelly Bryant next season.

It’s not Franklin, it was moorehead, imo.

We all knew saquon was a once a decade special talent when we saw him in 2015. They were still a near .500 team. They didn’t take off until moorehead came along, which was a match in heaven for mcsorley.

Theyll still have great talent and always be solid, but I think we see a noticeable drop off next year.

Joe Moorhead is coaching at Mississippi State.

EDIT: I replied to this response to the suggestion that Franklin made the dumb call: "It’s not Franklin, it was moorehead, imo."

Do the negs mean there are 7 Mgousers who think Moorehead is still the OC at Penn State?

His running style behind the LOS last year, was more suited for the next leval. Takeaway his TD on the opening kickoff versus OSU last year, osu completely shut him down. If he stays healthy he'll have a long and great career in the NFL. The Giants are the perfect fit for him. The giants have needed a real featured RB forever. Just like dallas was a good fit for ezekiel elliot. At the college level against the better defenses he danced around too much behind yhe LOS imo. But that works in the NFL much better than college.

They look more talented than us?  Based on what?  McSorely may be slightly better than Shea.  They have some athletes on offense, but so do we.  Our defense is stacked.  I swear that people are disappointed strictly based on expectations.  We are at least as good program wise as late era Carr teams, and the competition within the division is more intense sans the laughing stock.  I think we beat PSU at home.

Mcsorely is a very good college QB. I don't think we should deny about that. He can run fast and tough, his decision making is fairly good. His arm punting is epic (remember the USC game?). I wish we have a good arm punting QB to take advantage of our tall WRs. Unfornately, our WRs are soft when they are tall, cannot catch the contested jump ball.  I truely believe DMac is beyond arm punting. He will be very good. Shea, not so much, he looks scared in his eyes on the two road games so far. Take too long to settle down, usually until late 2nd quarter. He has physical talents, but I question his awareness and decision making, pre-snap scanning ability. He is clearly not ready for NFL. But I am happy he will go this season, so we can enjoy DMac earlier. He's the one who can help JH to install his Stanfrod play book. Two TE set with no huddle, that's epic. need good OLs+QB to execute it, only Dmac has the potential to do that, IMO.

I do not question his toughness. Nor do I think DMAc should start this year. But I am not blindsided and I do recognize his weakness in the game. He's not very decisive in the pocket. He's still a huge upgrade from what we have last year. I am happy to have him this year. But I think his weakness will show later this season again and will likely cost us a game (similar to the fumble mistake in ND game). unfortunately, OC's uninspiring play call doesn't help him.

Franklin has moved PSU to a certain level.

PSU will win 9 or 10 games this year.  And PSU will do that most years.  And PSU will be, more often than not, a legitimate contender for a B1G Championship.

But the thing is --- that's exactly what PSU was in the 1993-1999 era (first 7 years in the B1G before Paterno's coaching ability started tailing off).

So, it's not THAT much of an accomplishment what Franklin has done.  The program is just back to a certain level they've been at before in relatively recent history.  And I give O'Brien, not Franklin, nearly all of the credit for keeping PSU afloat during the sanctions era.

A truly great coach gets the program to the next level (e.g., PSU of the 1980s where they were winning MNCs).

I don't think Franklin is going to be a truly great coach.  Ever.

I think he's been decent for them, but 3-10 vs osu, msu and u of m only gets hyped up if you're Jim Harbaugh apparently.  He's a very good to great recruiter and he has had success with assistants, but his game management is Zook level atrocious.  I like Michigan's chances at home in that game.  I think Ohio State is a tad over hyped.  I don't think their defense is that good past the front four and Borland.  I also think they're going to miss what J.T. Barrett did for their ground game.  That may not matter until the playoff, but both PSU and OSU are beatable if U of M keep improving.  Big if though...

Franklin is essentially Brady Hoke, but found coaches who made it work. He is a salesman and a cheerleader, that is it. Most coaches have a specialty, either offense or defense, and you see their handprints all iver the product on the field.

During the timeouts before the 4th down play at the end of the game, Franklin was Hoke. He was in the huddle listening to his headset and clapping, but no input on anything football related.

They're similar except that one had a program that rapidly deteriorated and the other built his program up to a top 10 NYD bowl level? Hoke lost more games each year than the previous one and by years 3 & 4 our program under Hoke was falling apart and we were going 5-7 and 7-6. Meanwhile Franklin took a program in worse condition and built it up to 11-2 in years 3 and 4 with Rose/Fiesta appearances.

Better comparison is Mack Brown, "he's just a CEO with talent" while he was going 10-2 every year.

I don't get all this hate towards James... The guy played a competitive game against OSU, took them down to the wire... wtf.

Last year they creamed us.  They look like a much better team than us.  If their coach is a fucking idiot, what does that say of our coach?

Why do we always have the pompous attitude when our team hasn't don't shit in 2 decades???

Do you get out much? The end of that game stunk to high heaven. Franklin was LOST. He was absolutely clueless on that last play.

He also made several curious calls leading up to 4th and 5. That scumbag Meyer was smirking on the other sideline...the smirk of a man who knows he owns you.

Worst in game coach in P5.

Quit using Franklin's ineptitude to push your Harbaugh sucks agenda.
