Not as dumb as Meyer taking a delay of game on a 2 point conversion when he had 3 TO's
September 30th, 2018 at 12:15 AM ^
and then meyer called a Timeout after the penalty, that's epic. He shoudl have call a timeout to avoid the penalty. lol.
September 30th, 2018 at 3:46 AM ^
They should have had an excessive celebration penalty so it was all even.
September 29th, 2018 at 11:50 PM ^
Wow that was bad. PSU blew a handful of chances pretty poorly
September 29th, 2018 at 11:51 PM ^
Franklins game management is garbage, but I’ll never understand all the hate he gets here. He’s been great for PSU
September 29th, 2018 at 11:53 PM ^
Shut up, James.
September 29th, 2018 at 11:56 PM ^
He hit the QB lottery with McSorely which makes up for a lot of his coaching inadequacies. Will be interesting to see how good his teams are when he doesn't have a QB that can generate 400 yards of offense.
September 29th, 2018 at 11:59 PM ^
Like teams never reload. Never happens. Won't happen at PSU. Why would it.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:01 AM ^
People were insistent that McSorely's success was all luck with great jump-ball receivers last year, then it was because Saquon Barkley was unstoppable last year. Now it's that Franklin is lucky to have him.
Franklin is exceeding my expectations, regrettably. The last play was junk (probably the OC's call there), but I feel worse about our game against PSU than I did before today. They look excellent.
BTW, the "let's see how he does without McSorely next year" take won't go very far. Unless they've got a top QB ready to go, PSU seems like the ideal destination for either Jalen Hurts or Kelly Bryant next season.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:05 AM ^
It’s not Franklin, it was moorehead, imo.
We all knew saquon was a once a decade special talent when we saw him in 2015. They were still a near .500 team. They didn’t take off until moorehead came along, which was a match in heaven for mcsorley.
Theyll still have great talent and always be solid, but I think we see a noticeable drop off next year.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:49 AM ^
Joe Moorhead is coaching at Mississippi State.
EDIT: I replied to this response to the suggestion that Franklin made the dumb call: "It’s not Franklin, it was moorehead, imo."
Do the negs mean there are 7 Mgousers who think Moorehead is still the OC at Penn State?
September 30th, 2018 at 9:04 PM ^
Nah I'm just piling on at this point.
September 30th, 2018 at 9:56 AM ^
His running style behind the LOS last year, was more suited for the next leval. Takeaway his TD on the opening kickoff versus OSU last year, osu completely shut him down. If he stays healthy he'll have a long and great career in the NFL. The Giants are the perfect fit for him. The giants have needed a real featured RB forever. Just like dallas was a good fit for ezekiel elliot. At the college level against the better defenses he danced around too much behind yhe LOS imo. But that works in the NFL much better than college.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:06 AM ^
James Franklin makes dumb decisions but they look more talented than us and have won more big games than us and have a big ten championship.
September 30th, 2018 at 1:11 AM ^
If the refs call JT short, nobody is talking about Penn State and Michigan would have a CFP appearance. We beat the same Wisconsin team that PSU beat in the B1G title game
September 30th, 2018 at 8:56 AM ^
Doesn't mean that we would beat them again on a neutral field though.
September 30th, 2018 at 4:08 AM ^
Franklin kicked the crap out of us last year...so to diss him now is so unbecoming... Never did I think PSU would get to this level . NOBODY would have achieved what he did. He crushes recruiting too. He may have been a better hire here.
September 30th, 2018 at 8:57 AM ^
dumb take. that’s his only win against harbaugh and we curb stomped them the year before
September 30th, 2018 at 6:48 AM ^
If The Game 2016 is reffed even CLOSE to fair (0 live action calls on OSU = BS) then Franklin does not have a conference title.
September 30th, 2018 at 3:46 PM ^
They look more talented than us? Based on what? McSorely may be slightly better than Shea. They have some athletes on offense, but so do we. Our defense is stacked. I swear that people are disappointed strictly based on expectations. We are at least as good program wise as late era Carr teams, and the competition within the division is more intense sans the laughing stock. I think we beat PSU at home.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:24 AM ^
Mcsorely is a very good college QB. I don't think we should deny about that. He can run fast and tough, his decision making is fairly good. His arm punting is epic (remember the USC game?). I wish we have a good arm punting QB to take advantage of our tall WRs. Unfornately, our WRs are soft when they are tall, cannot catch the contested jump ball. I truely believe DMac is beyond arm punting. He will be very good. Shea, not so much, he looks scared in his eyes on the two road games so far. Take too long to settle down, usually until late 2nd quarter. He has physical talents, but I question his awareness and decision making, pre-snap scanning ability. He is clearly not ready for NFL. But I am happy he will go this season, so we can enjoy DMac earlier. He's the one who can help JH to install his Stanfrod play book. Two TE set with no huddle, that's epic. need good OLs+QB to execute it, only Dmac has the potential to do that, IMO.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:31 AM ^
Disagree.
Shea is the man. He put the team on his back today and won us that game. That was some good, good, clutch shit from him towards the end, and we should be very happy to have him.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:43 AM ^
I do not question his toughness. Nor do I think DMAc should start this year. But I am not blindsided and I do recognize his weakness in the game. He's not very decisive in the pocket. He's still a huge upgrade from what we have last year. I am happy to have him this year. But I think his weakness will show later this season again and will likely cost us a game (similar to the fumble mistake in ND game). unfortunately, OC's uninspiring play call doesn't help him.
September 30th, 2018 at 6:14 AM ^
Patterson is a gamer. That's the most moxie we have seen in a QB in a long time. Patterson showed tremendous poise.
September 30th, 2018 at 6:47 PM ^
WHAT? I like DMac as much as the next guy, but Patterson and YES the O line pulled this game from the jaws of defeat.
The guy behind the guy is always the answer...
September 30th, 2018 at 12:44 AM ^
I feel worse about our game against PSU than I did before today. They look excellent.
Keep in mind, PSU played a night home game today. Playing on the road in Ann Arbor is another story.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:49 AM ^
Agreed and there’s no way our defense will allow McSorely to gain 400 yards.
September 30th, 2018 at 10:38 AM ^
I hope it's hurts. Bryant is legit a nightmare. Hurts can't throw.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:00 AM ^
Hey, james' mom is on MGoBlog!!!
September 30th, 2018 at 12:25 AM ^
Franklin has moved PSU to a certain level.
PSU will win 9 or 10 games this year. And PSU will do that most years. And PSU will be, more often than not, a legitimate contender for a B1G Championship.
But the thing is --- that's exactly what PSU was in the 1993-1999 era (first 7 years in the B1G before Paterno's coaching ability started tailing off).
So, it's not THAT much of an accomplishment what Franklin has done. The program is just back to a certain level they've been at before in relatively recent history. And I give O'Brien, not Franklin, nearly all of the credit for keeping PSU afloat during the sanctions era.
A truly great coach gets the program to the next level (e.g., PSU of the 1980s where they were winning MNCs).
I don't think Franklin is going to be a truly great coach. Ever.
September 30th, 2018 at 8:39 AM ^
This is my take as well. He recruits well, and PSU should always be a top-tier program in the conference. But he's never struck me as an innovator, which means he'll go as far as his team's talent takes him.
September 30th, 2018 at 7:32 AM ^
I agree. To think how he turned that program around is insane.
September 30th, 2018 at 7:37 AM ^
without Moorehead, Franklin’s offense has taken a slight but noticeable step backward.
October 1st, 2018 at 11:05 AM ^
I agree, way too much reliance on McSorely if something bad happens to him I think the wheels come off pretty quickly.
September 30th, 2018 at 3:43 PM ^
I think he's been decent for them, but 3-10 vs osu, msu and u of m only gets hyped up if you're Jim Harbaugh apparently. He's a very good to great recruiter and he has had success with assistants, but his game management is Zook level atrocious. I like Michigan's chances at home in that game. I think Ohio State is a tad over hyped. I don't think their defense is that good past the front four and Borland. I also think they're going to miss what J.T. Barrett did for their ground game. That may not matter until the playoff, but both PSU and OSU are beatable if U of M keep improving. Big if though...
September 29th, 2018 at 11:51 PM ^
Hope he is that stupid when they come to Ann Arbor. We may need some help
September 29th, 2018 at 11:51 PM ^
Field Goal, Franklin.
September 29th, 2018 at 11:52 PM ^
I'm a 42 year old man who hasn't thought about football strategy in 24 years and it would've taken me about 5 seconds to draw up a better play.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:00 AM ^
Tell us...30 min later
September 30th, 2018 at 12:31 AM ^
I always appreciate snark...
...douche.
I'm not going to apologize for looking at a blog unitl after the game ends.
September 30th, 2018 at 12:13 AM ^
We'll let Franklin know.
September 29th, 2018 at 11:54 PM ^
James, this is Jim, I’ve got the perfect play for you....
September 29th, 2018 at 11:55 PM ^
He's one of the worst in-game coaches in the Power 5. Just a blithering buffoon on the sideline.
September 30th, 2018 at 2:02 AM ^
Franklin is essentially Brady Hoke, but found coaches who made it work. He is a salesman and a cheerleader, that is it. Most coaches have a specialty, either offense or defense, and you see their handprints all iver the product on the field.
During the timeouts before the 4th down play at the end of the game, Franklin was Hoke. He was in the huddle listening to his headset and clapping, but no input on anything football related.
September 30th, 2018 at 9:34 AM ^
Yeah I've made the Hoke comparison before.
September 30th, 2018 at 10:30 AM ^
They're similar except that one had a program that rapidly deteriorated and the other built his program up to a top 10 NYD bowl level? Hoke lost more games each year than the previous one and by years 3 & 4 our program under Hoke was falling apart and we were going 5-7 and 7-6. Meanwhile Franklin took a program in worse condition and built it up to 11-2 in years 3 and 4 with Rose/Fiesta appearances.
Better comparison is Mack Brown, "he's just a CEO with talent" while he was going 10-2 every year.
September 30th, 2018 at 7:44 AM ^
I don't get all this hate towards James... The guy played a competitive game against OSU, took them down to the wire... wtf.
Last year they creamed us. They look like a much better team than us. If their coach is a fucking idiot, what does that say of our coach?
Why do we always have the pompous attitude when our team hasn't don't shit in 2 decades???
September 30th, 2018 at 10:38 AM ^
Because his play calling was horrendous and caused the loss. Franklin is 1-3 against Michigan but I guess you’re one of those last year only counts type of guys
September 30th, 2018 at 6:40 PM ^
Do you get out much? The end of that game stunk to high heaven. Franklin was LOST. He was absolutely clueless on that last play.
He also made several curious calls leading up to 4th and 5. That scumbag Meyer was smirking on the other sideline...the smirk of a man who knows he owns you.
Worst in game coach in P5.
Quit using Franklin's ineptitude to push your Harbaugh sucks agenda.
