This is the second time this year Harbaugh has done this. I guess he's just trying to show confidence in his offense now. Prior to this year, his MO after winning the coin toss has always been to defer.

Why does M consistently pass on the kickoff fair catch when every other team has figured out a free pass to the 25 is more often than not a good call?

Because Ambry ran that one back and they want to do it again.
Set us back pretty badly at the beginning of the game. But maybe there's value for it, I don't know.

I mean, if Ambry can say he sees a seam every time, that's cool. But statistically, he's probably got his return for the year. In most situations, if he's catching a ball near the sidelines inside the 10, he's most likely not going to make it to the 20. Take the field position and the lessened risk of injury, live to fight another day.

I do worry that we will have a few returned for touchdowns or very large returns. It seems like he is out kicking the coverage a lot. We have been fortunate so far with our guys staying in their lanes and not allowing a huge return.

Key is his consistency. Coverage expects 50+ yard punts & plays accordingly. Also, chance of fumbles increases as returners are constantly being hit.

Outside of QB, easily the most improved position this year. Hart is dwarfing the numbers he and Robbins put up last year.

I was pissed when Northwestern punter launched a 45 yarder, pretty sure I yelled "Brian!!!!"
We've come a long long way from RR and Hoke in this department.
