Are you effin kidding me on that targeting call? I missed the 4th qtr so thanks posting this. I read thru the Targeting thread and saw the mixed opinions, but never got a chance to see the play. That looks like a head up facemask hit right to the chest. I am so fucking sick of the administration of that rule. I also noted quite a few of our players drilled right in the head yesterday with no call and no buzz down by the booth.

It looked like his head was up though. I didn't get the slow-mo replay but I did watch it a few times in normal speed. Was his head down and did he hit him in the face?

I agree, it seems like his head is down because he's running quickly and trying to get to the QB. He hits him with his facemask and his head rolls upwards on contact, not downwards ("leading with the crown"). I'm still confused about how this rule is applied.

some consistency would be nice... if indeed they missed targeting on Ben Mason, and also Grant Perry.
No rule is good if it's applied in a seemingly arbitrary manner. How are players and for that matter coaches supposed to know when they are in compliance or not.

you want to see real targeting? ben masons carry right before he scored his first td when he was stopped short. not only did the defender lead with the crown of his helmet , but he drilled it directly to the side of masons head. that is why the rule doesnt work. the refs have no idea how to apply it and let obvious targeting go uncalled every game.

Just watched the game and Dylan is going to be a great qb at Michigan. I also think Martinez will be pretty darn good for Nebraska

Honest question. If you never heard of Martinez or the hype prior to this game, would you have the same opinion? He was 7-15 for 22 yds and 1 int. 7 rushes -12 yds. I honestly heard the hype, but saw nothing yesterday. He was terrible. His supporting cast isn't great, but I didn't see anything yesterday that would suggest he is going to be really good. And yes he is with a bad knee. I just saw nothing from him that would suggest anything positive. Dylan on the other hand did show some things that lend itself to a bright future.

He had 3 great passes in that game and is a freshman on a terrible team. Also playing with a bad knee. I think he will be just fine there in a year or 2

I agree that yesterday showed nothing but I think he'll be good. Against Colorado when he was healthy he was dangerous. His OL sucked yesterday and our D is lethal, but he'll be a problem for a lot of teams a year or two from now. If he can stay healthy.

I was at the game.
Things he did well:
Excellent ball fake when the fake is going to his left. He lets the ball ride with the RB and makes it look like he has made the hand off. With the back going to the right he isn't as effective probably because his first steps to the left aren't as quick (don't know if that is related to his old injury)
Not so good:
Does not have a strong arm. Is not that accurate. Can throw on the right a bit but has an awkward motion when heading to the left. He has an extra hitch and step to get his shoulder around. Patterson is far superior in this regard.
He reminded me a bit of namesake Taylor Martinez that also played QB for Nebraska - also had a great ball fake and was not a good passer. Taylor was much quicker and seemed to be a more dangerous runner.
Dylan M definitely looked good - too bad his run for the TD was called back because he showed a lot of speed. His long passes were actually pretty good. He got at least two long throws that should have had pass interference called.

I really liked what I saw from McCaffrey as well.
We have nice problems at QB this season, which I will gladly take.

Agree about McCaffrey. I was hoping to see a clip of the called back 75-yd TD to confirm my memory of Dylan not losing a step on a DB in pursuit. I've always just kind of assumed he's pretty fast because of his dad & brother, but he seems to be legit pretty fast.

The argument was that it was good block, until the runner was past; then the hold was called because he didn't "release" the defender so that he could pursue.

The announcers were not good.
1. The play by play guy, Tim Bando, said at the beginning that Patterson was the best dual threat QB since Chad Henne. ? I guess he never saw or heard of Denard Robinson.
2. The other commentator, Spencer Tillman actually had some insights but for some reason, the director didn't go back to clips or replays that helped illustrate them and he seemed really forced. It seemed that he had several pages of stories, anecdotes and stuff and felt compelled to use it all especially when the game was clearly non-competitive after the first quarter.
3. About the best parts that were visible only at home were the details about how many players Scott Frost brought in. He really cleared house.

Usually with a blowout it's that one team played above its heads and the other team fired blanks. Sure the better team decisively won but they're probably not better than what the final score showed.
With this game... the 56-10 score undersold how much better we were than Nebraska - mind you, that's not a ringing endorsement of us but more an indictment on just how bad they are.

It was a perfect fall Saturday, cooler weather, dominating win... sure we eased way up on the pedal in the second half (and Neb stopped trying much earlier than that), love that Harbaugh gave almost everyone on the roster the chance to feast on the carcass. Our players had real-time practice against another team. They did great in practice...AND executed!
Which is what the opening game should have been for....

Rewatching it, Dylan definitely had great athleticism and made a good throw to Bell on the td. I do want to address how so many fans are saying he’s the next big thing and completely throwing peters in the trash. All of mccaffrey’s throws, the receivers were wide open, even the bell throw he had a step and a half. That was still an exceptional throw but on the one pass attempt peters had, no one was open except for a guy 1 yard from the out of bounds line, 20+ yards away for a hobbled qb to throw to on the run. It wasn’t like peters could lead him, there was no field left to lead him, and he made the read late but again, no in game reps. I also saw Dylan run the same play and had a receiver running the route Eubanks was and threw it directly at the receiver, if the dB covering him looks back it’s a potential pick luckily it was too high for anyone. The dB made a great play on peters throw. It also had shades of shea’s Pick last week where the TE could have come back for the ball but didn’t. His other options were absolutely blanketed. Dylan had receivers wide open and found some big running lanes to exploit when he did tuck it. There’s a reason peters was ahead of him before he got hurt. BP hasn’t had near the amount of reps since the season started as Dylan because of the injury. His first throw on a no win play while he’s clearly favoring a leg doesn’t mean he’s trash and has no chance to beat out Dylan for the starting job next year. Just like how everyone overreacted about week 1, I think we need to pump the brake on mccaffrey hype just a little. I could have made every throw he had except for the bell one. All of these guys have amazing touch on the ball.

Also, if we want to analyze qb play, Dylan made a read and throw to Martin in the end zone on third down, should have led him to the back of the end zone and didn’t, meanwhile if he just glances to his right instead of predetermining the throw, which I know happens but I’d rather not see it on a fade on third down, McCurry is more wide open than I’ve seen a receiver all year and can waltz in for a td. Yet he threw to the receiver that needed to make a spectacular catch to haul it in. But let’s chastise peters for making really the only throw he could but it was late and took a spectacular play by the defender to result in an int. Let’s just be fair with our criticism and have some perspective.
