Joking about kicking Rutgers out

Submitted by maizerayz on

I know its long been fun to some folks to joke incessantly about kicking Rutgers out of the B1G, but is anyone else getting tired of it? Some of the people aren't joking, and it stops being funny after awhile. These days a lot of Michigan fans seem to sneak in a kick out Rutgers joke everywhere.

They've been our conference mates for about 5 years now, and New Jersey is an important recruiting ground, not just for athletes but students as well. And yes they've sucked on the field, and will continue to suck at least in the near future, but what else?

As far as I know, Rutgers hasn't covered up pedophile rapists for decades, haven't covered up doctors committing sexual assaults and rapes on hundreds of woman over decades, haven't prioritized football over wife beating assistant coaches, and haven't had players during practice after refusing medical aid. I'm talking about other Big Ten east teams btw.

I just feel we, as Michigan, should hold ourselves to a higher standard. A tightly knit Big Ten benefits everyone, and from the outside it looks really childish and arrogant to keep talking stuff like that.

Who the hell is joking? I seriously think they should be removed from the conference. Their athletic department sketchy behavior is just one of many reasons they should go. We can recruit the state of New Jersey without having them in the conference.

Horribly moral corrupt schools dont make the terrible decision to bring on Rutgers any better. Psu MSU and OSU get better with every passing scandal. Rutgers gets worse with every passing season.

1. Dont invite Rutgers

2. As a conference take a moral stand that the NCAA cant or wont and lay down punishments that fit the crime. Set the standard.

Its terribly confusing that the Big Ten is the conference that shows itself as the most morally corrupt. If we policed ourselves maybe that would change.

Rutgers being in the Big Ten (and Michigan being in the Big Ten East) is very good for Michigan recruiting in NJ.

It makes us more of a "local" team.  We've been getting guys like Gary, Peppers, et al, that Penn State used to get and we need to keep that up.

If LOL RUTGERS! is the price we have to pay for that one week a year, it's worth it.

Sure, Michigan lost to Rutgers once. But then this happened in 2016:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/matchup?gameId=400869636

Look carefully at those stats. That's the equivalent of beating up a high school team. I'm not trying to be disrespectful, either. I felt bad for them in the second half. We played EVERY SINGLE PLAYER that traveled with our team. Our 4th stringers were on the field at one point if I recall correctly, and were still dominating. We had just under 500 yards on the ground alone.

Rutgers was shut out by us, MSU, PSU, and OSU in 2016. They took a slight step up in 2017, beating Purdue, Maryland, and Illinois, but also lost to EMU. Again, they were beaten to a pulp by the rest of the division. This year? They have been beaten by OSU (expected), Kansas(!), and Buffalo (!!). They were outscored by Kansas and Buffalo 97-27. It's not fair to the athletes who attend Rutgers to be demolished by teams far above their league when MAC teams (I'm including Kansas as a MAC team because what's the difference) are stomping them at home games.

Why do we feel the need to include them aside from the questionable impact that they have on conference revenue or competitive image, either academically or athletically? I would MUCH rather have Boston College as a conference member. They are recognizable, competitive, and respectable. Rutgers can be all of those things, but not at the level the B1G requires. Let them go be successful in another conference. Watch a Rutgers game during conference play and tell me that they belong here. You can't. They don't belong.

No, it's a somewhat serious joke in that it's funny that Rutgers is an epic failure, but they never should have been added to the conference and seriously should be kicked out.  At times I think Michigan should seriously consider leaving the Big 10, but then I remember the leadership there is probably content swindling millions just like the majority of the NCAA.  I'd like to think Michigan at least has higher moral standards, but I wonder how those would hold up in trying circumstances.
