I don't think that has anything to do with it. Gene has nothing to do with the success of the team on the field. Sure, he was able to get Meyer to come to OSU as the coach, but that was never a difficult task. Other than that, what has Gene done to yield positive on the field results?

There has to be another reason why that ass clown is still the athletic director.

It's because he's respected among his peers, has been on numerous committees, and raises absurd amounts of money for the university. He also hired a couch that beat Michigan for over a decade and brought in the hottest coaching name at the time.

Well, they did fire Tressel.  They have done the right thing sometimes.  And as their school profile has been raised (OSU is now a pretty strong school academically) I thought they wouldn’t want to be stuck with the tarnish of Meyer.  I do think U-M would have fired him.  OSU putting its head in the sand for Meyer legitimately surprises me.

Actually, they didn't fire Tressel. Gene Smith is on the record as stating Tressel would NOT lose his job. 

However, when the NCAA sent a notice of allegations that Tressel had committed major violations and THAT is what forced their hand. However, they STILL didn't want to fire Tressel, so they asked him to resign. They were trying to blunt the impact from the NCAA and it kinda worked. They ended up with a whole 3 years of probation, vacated wins in 2010, and a 2012 postseason ban. No loss of scholarships, however, so big whoop.

Louis Freeh, former FBI director who lead the Penn State investigation, referrIng to a forensic analysis of Meyer and Smith’s phones to try and recover deleted texts, is quoted:

”You can’t really do a thorough, credible job without doing that.” 

I would imagine that was the idea...

I believe that BOTH Meyer and Gene Smith broke the law, but only Smith admitted it:

The day Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer was placed on administrative leave over his handling of abuse allegations against a longtime assistant, he asked a colleague how to delete old text messages from his university mobile phone, outside investigators hired by the university said in a report released last month.

Yet the legal team investigating Mr. Meyer’s conduct, led by former Securities and Exchange Commission chairwoman Mary Jo White, decided not to send Mr. Meyer’s phone to a forensics lab to determine if he actually destroyed evidence, according to two people familiar with the matter.

These people said that investigators also did not seek to extract deleted text messages from the phone of Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, who handed over a device that contained no texts. The AD’s explanation was that he routinely deletes all texts after sending or receiving them, these people said. Such a practice may violate both Ohio open records law and the school’s records-retention policy, experts say.

urban denied deleting texts?  after turning over a phone that had no texts past 1 year? after having a conversation about how to delete texts older than 1 year?
